Israel Dagg apologises for offensive tweet

All Black Israel Dagg has apologised for the use of a homophobic slur on twitter.

At 10.33am Dagg used the word "fag" in a tweet to Auckland Blues player Brendon O'Connor.

After the comment caused a large online response he apologised for poor "choice of word."

"Wrong choice of word people don't let it ruin ya Sunday, keep smiling," he Tweeted.

Labour MP and former Black Ferns representative, Louisa Wall, was disappointed with Dagg's use of the derogatory word. 

As Kiwi role models All Black players have a responsibility to not use language that marginalises groups of society, Wall said.

"They fail to recognise the responsibility they have as leaders in New Zealand society, and the influence they have on a whole generation not only of young people, but they represent all New Zealanders now," she said.

Wall wants to work with the New Zealand Rugby Union to help players understand the importance and influence of the way they behave.

"Specifically for leaders such as the All Blacks, because they are so much more powerful and there is a whole generation of young people who look up to them and will embody what they communicate," she said.

 "We want them to be the champion of inclusiveness. They represent all of us, not just some of us."

the comment is wrong, but even i am not bothered by it as much as i know i should be, a sign of where things are at in regards to tolerence towrds the gays and full equal rights, but well get there one day.

Can you blame straight people and parents for not wanting their young kids to see shit like that. saSUE may I offer a helpful suggestion. Given the bad behaviour, legendary by now, of the abs and their fans, should the NZRFU not establish a website call "nz rugby apologises". Here all players and fans could offer fast and abject apologies for their actions including all bent refs. arevolutionary approach I know but one thayt could be of great benefit to so many.

It would lead to greater mental well being of guilt ridden nz oaks and we who have been offended could offer forgiveness and restoration.

unfortunately i dont agree that society has moved on, when negros were freed from slavery in america, society had moved on, but u could still use the N word then and it would be considered socially acceptable.
today the use of that word will for the most part get wide condemnation and it took decades for it to reach to that level.
the term fag is derogatory and it is to gays as the N word is to blacks and should be treated as such, but as u can see by the responses here from kiwis, saffas and even inbred aussies alike, peoples attitudes, myself included are decades away from where it needs to be.

i love God and am big believer in Jesus Christ, but i dont believe in the bible as much, yes it considers homosexuality an abomination, but it also condones slavery, it states a mother and father can stone their child to death for not honouring them and also says that working on the sabath is a crime punishable by death.

IMO the bible is a rough guide line to how man should be treating one another, i tend to follow most of the good examples in there and turn my back on what is clearly by todays more modern and civil standards complete and utter shite, :o)

I do agree with you about the gays however, it is just plain sick (and Red you should be ashamed of yourself!)
