It's high time we're blessed with a special 10 ..

We currently don't have one. The last fly half of note was Henry Honiball. He stood at 1.90m and weighed in at 90kg. Lean, mean and intimidating to the extreme. I’d give my left nut to have this boy playing at 10 now.  

How that would change things for us!!!

Since then we’ve had the likes of Jannie De Beer, Gaffie Du Toit, Braam van Straaten, Louis Koen, Jaco van der Westhuizen, Butch James, Andre Pretorius, Derik HouGat, Meyer Bosman, Ruan Pienaar, Peter Grant and Morne Steyn.

None of which are anything special.

Why is it that we have rugby players pushing for 100 caps across the board but when it comes to the flyhalf position, Morne Steyn stands out as our most capped 10 with a mere 40 odd caps … and still counting … ?

New Zealand churns them out at will, while we’re left to compete against the world with the average and the ordinary.

Which position in the starting 15 dictates terms more so than at Fly half? Why then are we playing everything off 9?

We saw how most of our attacking game plan was to play off 9. Even though Pat Lambie tends to play a lot flatter than Steyn, he was kept out of the attack most of the match. 

Was that a part of Meyers instructions (due to a lack of confidence in him) or was it a deliberate ploy by Du Preez to ensure the return of his mate Steyn to the 10 jersey?

I suppose that's a little foolish of me to think Du Preez would deliberately sabotage his own team mate. Still can't help thinking about it though.

I am hopeful that Johan Goosen manages to keep himself fit and healthy in the coming year as we need closure here.

Is he the messiah we’ve been looking for? Some claim he is.

Heaven knows we need a special 10 coming through right about now … it's long over due ... if not Goosen … then who?

A very wise comment on your part.   I think that we have not had any really acceptable pivot since Honiball and that was nearly 20 years ago - I agree with you on that one.

I am still hoping that Goosen lives up to his early promise - he is built very much like Honiball was and is - like Honiball - a thinking flyhalf with ball sense - not robotic like the other flyhalfs mentioned by you.

The other flyhalf one has to keep a beady eye on is Timo Swiel - especially when he plays for the Sharks next year.   He was exceptional when playing for his school team and was the same for the WP Under 21 team this year.   Small guy - but a ball sense whiz kid with exceptional speed thrown in.  

I think our best hope at flyhalfs for the future is -

1  Goosen

2  Swiel

3  Lambie

Have you gone bananas this morning?  Sounds like it after you come up with this one after the Goosen steroids rubbish.  What are you smoking?  Must be really good stuff to make you hallucinate like that.

Honiball varied his game considerably - but he did what Morne Steyn never does - and that is to attack the gain line himself from time to time.   Not all the time a you seems to think.   Was very successful in getting through the first line of defence and off-loaded the ball successfully in the process. 

That made him a successful flyhalf and it was proven beyond any shadow of doubt while he played for the Springboks.

Cancer, it does not take long to sum up a players credentials......Goosen has been around for a year or two. Lem was good but certainly not special. Stransky was a better all round player as was Butch.

Goosen has it all........great boot and very good at sniffing out an attacking opportunity. Sadly injury has stood in his way.  

Lem , one of the best ever , he was one of the greatest readers of space in front of him. 

CleanCut , there are some quality youngsters moving up through the ranks , but I do believe that a Brilliant flyhalf is often made by the slick and flawless relationship between the scrumhalf and the eightman.

Think of this

Gary Teichmann , Joost , Lem . that's almost the holy trinity , all three super smart rugby brains. the quest for quality ball was never in doubt.

That really is a 100% assessment of Fourie - he is not up to speed with test rugby and it is unlikely that he would ever be again.
