If I have torate the openside flanks in SA at present I would put them in the following order:-
1 Jaco Kriel2 Francois Louw3 Marcel Coetzee
Kriel is a class act - better in the way he can liaise with backline players than the other two.

Chavanga missed a tackle he really should have got. In that second try the sharks were utterly hopeless. Both events need never have happenedd with decent defence. Would oaks still be raving about Jaco then.Playing two 100 kg type loosies like Carr and Kriel would be madness, especially when you add in 106 kg matfiled!
At best give Jaco a shot off the bench. Next years Super 16 will be defining.
Not many 100 kg loosies can cut it at test level and other things like a decent tight 5 must be in place etc. Not entirely convinced but as I said give him a shot of the bench initially and we will see how he goes with the big boys. In certain matches against certain teams and conditions it could work.

Such a player shouldn't be wasted on the bench. The player is
is on top form and needs as much game time as possible to
adapt into the new surroundings at test level. Kriel has a lot more
to offer than Burger and Louw to be frank. The following bok loose trio
should be : 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Marcell Coetzee, 6 Jaco Kriel.

Must agree Jerome. The sooner he gets into the mix the better. Playing him off the bench is an absolute waste.
Since when does a 6 need to be the same size as a blindside flanker. We need explosive power with pace. Kriel is the perfect man for the job.

Last year he had also an outstanding CC, probably not as great as this season but also outstanding, and I pointed him as a possible next bok openside.
But I was a little disappointed with his SR performance. Not that he played badly, he had a good SR campaign but he did n't excel as he did and does in the CC. So this springs doubts about his ability for the test arena.
Anyway, I think that the openside spot should be btwin Coetzee, him and Carr, no matter these 2 lasts are only around 100 kg, not all depends on Kg and weight.

Nice video mate, he could make a fantastic try compilation video from this season as he has scored some good tries.

He does look good, but I can't shake the feeling we are looking at the Spies/Kanko type of player that looks great until they get into the test rugby arena and then all that space is closed down, and they disappear!
Not saying he won't succeed, but I like the Vermeulen's of this world that don't play pretty rugby, but graft hard, tackle hard and get in the face of the opposition!

Those tries were exceptional but I doubt he would have scored either against a team is top form, especially a SuperXV team.
The first try he gets it is actually the Sharks hooker than he runs around. The tackle attempt by the Sharks winger was pathetic, and the fullback was no where. The first time I watched the try it looked great, but when I watched it again I was not so impressed.
The other try he setup he showed massive strength. Still some of the attempted tacklers that go shook off should have held on until the 2nd tackler got their to pull Strauss down or try rip the ball out of his grasp.

Playing at 6 is a whole lot different to playing at 8 or 7 for that matter.
You can't expect a big burly lad to keep up with the ball for 80 minutes, go to ground, wrestle someone for possession making it available for the next phase.
Both Kanko and Spies played at 8. No way they'd be competitive at 6. Different requirements. A different build type. Different skills.
Kriel is a Brussow type with just as much hand strength and a lot more pace. He's also better in the loose, is difficult to bring down, gets awesome go forward, with a good offload and can gas many a backline player when needed.
The man's a machine and doesn't stop till the final whistle blows. His fitness levels are incredible.
What makes you think I'm a fan?
