There is a tendency to analyse players individually and then attempt to slot them in. That’s fine but the building of a side has to start with ideas, plans, diversification and how you are going to achieve these goals and plans…how different, unique your strategies (both attack and defense)…are going to be…predictability is no good …what’s going to be the difference will count…creative thinking from coach and the ability of the coach to use the strengths and unique abilities of each individual to knit together in an ultimate team effort and commitment to achieve those movements, strategies that will foil your opponenents…merely going through the routine will never be enough to give the final product.
Battles are always won by strategy…and I think Jake White is strategist, unconventional which is very good but also will not tolerate any slackness from his squad.
Francois Steyn without question has exceptional talent but a non-chalant attitude based on the past will not see him through…he has a big opportunity to re-establish his past record really get fit and be in top shape and to pull his weight or else he will be eliminated…I surmise that Jake has told him so…the Sharks will not carry passengers …every man to do what’s expected of him and more or else you’re out buddy.
This applies to all and although I’ve picked Frans out as an example a side cannot rely on glory boys…glory boys have to earn their place too and I think Jake will apply this…no more laid back over confident attitudes. Each game at a time.
This is Jake’s style…he has a lot of good weaponry and ammunition on hand and I predict he will use it to it’s full potential.
I think Sharks this year will change history…at least I hope so and this will permeate into the rest of South African rugby.
Jake we are backing you and good luck…you have the best tools…just finish the job.
