I see that he has included impressive young centres Tyler Fisher and Esterhuizen in his squad of 25 who are taking on Saracens later in the month. Good to Tim Swiel included as well.

Jake said there would be some new faces in the Sharks side this year.......hopefully by new faces he meant these 3 talented youngsters.

I might just become a Jake fan!!!

Good news for Sharks and for these players.

Well that's a change and a pleasant one at that...but I do remember that you had a full go at those (including myself) that lauded his abilities and credentials.

Anyway I also enjoy it when I'm proven wrong...I like people to succeed  and even though I've criticised players and coaches I count it far, far better if I'm proven wrong.

Jake is no longer the Snake...

Yeah Seb, I am no big Jake fan, but he seems to have started on the right foot........he has one hell of a squad of players to work with........lets hope the madness does not set in.

Jake has always been a brilliant coach. His stint with the Boks ended in the crown jewel of a RWC win, but how much better could it have been if he wasn't under enormous political pressure? He has always been open minded and an innovator.....the rush defence, the recall of Monty and Os, the selection of Eddie and a more expansive style at the RWC.
I would expect him to do brilliantly at the Sharks. The odd thing is his S15 experience is likely to convert those who were serially negative....so look for calls for Jake to come back from those who slagged him off during his first term.
The sad thing is, if we gave Jake the tenure and support that Henry enjoyed in NZ, the Boks would now be where NZ is....at the head of the table and set for another RWC.

Nope he has never been a brilliant coach........his Bok record was average and his two years leading up to the WC merited a sacking.

Jake's biggest issue is his arrogance which has done little to endear him to the rugby fraternity.......the man always sticks his foot in it. Mallet, Kitch, Mac and Meyer are better coaches........and I suspect that Markgraaf might have proved better as well had the Bester brothers not got in the way.

I hope he does well for the Sharks, he certainly has the ammunition player wise

 Saffex

The squad is as follows:-

Lourens Adriaanse, Willem Alberts, Dale Chadwick, Marcell Coetzee, Kyle Cooper, Jean Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Pieter Stephanus du Toit, Adriaan Esterhuizen, Tyler Fisher, Paul Jordaan, Ryan Kankowski, Peet Marais, Charl McLeod, Tendai Mtawarira, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndugane, Etienne Oosthuizen, Jacobus Reinach, Francois Steyn, Timothy Swiel, Jaco van Tonder, Heimar Williams, Frederik Zeilinga.

I am not at all surprised by the squad - but it would be interesting to see the actual line-up.   Being a warm up game - which is normally used to test combinations - I think all the players will be given opportunities to show their worth.

Hope the game is televised live - would love to see how the players start off this year.

If we were in year 11 of Jake's tenure, the Boks would be miles better off. I have no problem with Meyer, he is a realist and has assembled a good team. I think he has the players' respect.
But when Jake coached his last game up north, for the Barbarians I believe, Bakkies made the effort to play....as he explained it, out of respect for Jake. We made a massive mistake replacing Jake with P dV and are still paying a price.

Yeah there have been some bad choices as coaches......Jake was not one of them, but all these coaches seem to make very poor selections at times and it costs them......Meyer is doing that already.

I feel for a guy like Ian Mac who by all accounts was a real astute rugby man........when he coached the Boks, he had no say in the selection of his squad........that is madness.

Dave, no Springbok coach in the history of rugby would have ever made selections that pleased everyone so it seems to me that you're destined to slag off every coach we ever appoint.
I do agree with you about the quality of Ian MacIntosh though. A brilliant rugby coach who to this day is not given enough credit for that 1995 RWC victory . . . although, having said that, I'll take nothing away from the late great Kitch Christie either . . . even if he was more of a conditioner than a rugby coach.

Rooi, do yourself a favour and read Gavin Rich's 'Poison Chalice'.......real eye opener when it comes to the high's and lows of all the coaches since readmission.

Poor Mac admitted to being too soft and always went with the majority vote, had no say in squad selections and was forced into using Transvaal players to implement his Sharks gameplan, which was ahead of its time, with the 10 lying flat. The Transvaal players never bought into his plan until it was too late.

Kitch admitted to using Mac's plan and drills

"Rooi, do yourself a favour and read Gavin Rich's 'Poison Chalice' . . ."
Will do, except my reading these days is limited to what I can download to my favourite piece of technology ever, my Kindle.
Must say, I don't read a lot of non-fiction but I'll give it a bash . . . only after I've finished Conn Iggulden's brilliant "Emperor" series though!

Yeah the Kindle is a great addition to modern technology.
'The Poisoned Chalice' is an easy read and gives a good synopsis of each coaches tenure.

Actually I very much enjoy Conn Iggulden. Have you read the Conqueror series? In some ways I liked it even more, one knows so little about that history. And I have just picked up the first book in the War of the Roses series, which I am really looking forward to reading.

I'm still not convinced of the Snakes current coaching credentials nor do I concede that Jake the Fake is anything like the messianic figure his fans claim him to be. We all know Jake is an unscrupulous charlatan, a fact most recently exposed by his swift departure from Australia once his application for Wallaby coach was resolutely rejected. Like a grifter in the night, Jake scuttled and scurried his way back home to seek the money, fame and fawning adulation he feels he deserves. Jake is a morally insolvent. conceited, self promoting, fraudulent reprobate. Small wonder he found relative success in Australia. He was amongst kindred spirits.

Few Jake supporters will ever acknowledge that Jakes tenure as SB coach encompassed the broadest possible spectrum of successes and failures ranging from the lofty heights of an accidental RWC trophy to the gutter depths of one of the Republics worst ever losing margins. The fanboys will cherry-pick the choicest pieces of Jakes career, counting the hits and excusing or dishonestly reconfiguring the less flattering misses.
Frothy mouthed fanboys will rigorously defend Jakes failures, explaining them away as the inevitable consequence of team (re)building or, even worse, they will lay the blame on the nebulous and unquantifiable effects of political interference. All professional coaches in SA must overcome these (real, over-egged or imagined??) obstacles but according to the revisionists groveling narrative, Jakes SB era was excessively blighted, far more than any of his predecessors and subsequent successors.

Any Jake White fanboy who dares to embark on an honest, fearless and comprehensive enquiry into his Springbok career must surely arrive at the same conclusion as me; i.e. Jake is the fortuitous recipient of a lucky dip, Eddie Jones led RWC campaign. This accolade alone, enhanced by the flurry of goodwill which arose in response to his much publicized dismissal, has elevated Jake to "sacred cow", "untouchable" status. He is beyond reproach and any critical enquiry is met with strident and hostile opposition. The Jake White myth is zealously guarded by those who are keen to ensure that his manufactured reputation is never queried or sullied.
Sorry Saffex, I dont mean to hijack your thread but I can't let the JW fanboys go unchallenged.

In his first year Jake won the TN

In his second year he was within 3 minutes of repeating.
His third year was destroyed by political wrangling more extreme than any coach could anticipate.

In his fourth year he won the RwC.

And poor old nuke has the temerity to question his credentials? Let me suggest you examine Robbie Deans' international record if you want to see failure.

 Nukefreekiwi

Sometimes you write absolute tripe on this site.   Lets wait and see what the Sharks produce in Super 15 and then reach conclusions.

Just one thing - with the value of the SA currency in serious decline - White did not return to SA for financial reasons.

LOL! You chumps are too easy. Write anything defamatory about the Jake White messiah and just wait for the wet pantied fanboys to crawl outta the woodwork and  repeat the same old canned apologetics  all JW apostles rely on to defend the great pretender. I stand by my comments. An Eddie Jones led RWC campaign and a TN is hardly the stuff of dreams. I appreciate pickings are slim in the Republic but I suggest you lift your collective game and aspire to something greater than the spurious achievements of a conceited snake like Mr White.

Nukefree it is clear that you have studied literature- at least at undergraduate level in university. Many of you posts have that poetic touch. Jake White had his doubters in SA but his results with 2 years at the Brumbies shows he is a good coach. It is hard to argue with results, or at least not logically.

Well nuke is suggesting we aspire to something greater than the achievements of Jake White. Is there a Gallactic Rugby Cup I'm not aware of, or perhaps he rates the Six Nations above the TN. Or perhaps when he edited his second piece and changed "gutter"  to  "woodwork", he realized he was pompously repeating himself......waaaaaaahaha.

Nuke doesn't like Jake as a person. That much is clear in his posts. I think he may also have a dislike of the South African people. Previous posts of his suggests this.

Bottom line is that Jake White is indeed an arsehole. Unreliable and arrogant to the extreme. Absconding from the Brumbies showed his character and I really wouldn't be surprised to see him do this again. To him it's all about self gain.

However, having said that ... he did bring a successful team of people together to coach and guide a rugby squad to world domination. That was the task handed him. He fulfilled this task and later went on to do the same at the Brumbies.

His record speaks for itself.

Like him or not, he is rather skilled at his profession.

Being an arsehole doesn't change this .

I'm expecting big things at the Sharks this year.

Thats not true CC. My wife is SA'n, we own property on the Eastern Cape, we have a son with dual citizenship and we travel there frequently. I just refuse to drink the Jake White koolaid. Im happy to concede that Jake may have evolved into a capable coach since 2007 but that doesnt negate my assertion that he wasn't an especially talented Springbok coach.

I'm with Nuke and CC on this one. Jake the Snake. Disliked him since the Mallet era, especially due to his Keo connections back then and later. I don't like name calling,  but he's a poeph ol in my book.
