The 27-year-old has been switched between centre and flyhalf a few times after injuries to Patrick Lambie and Fred Zeilinga, but has adapted each time, with his consistent kicking a crucial element for the Durban franchise to establish themselves on top of the Super Rugby table.

“I know him since he’s 19 and he’ll do whatever he thinks is important and whatever we feel the team needs,” White said on Wednesday.

“He’s slotted in from 12 to 10, he plays week in and week out, he plays 80 minutes all the time.

“His state of mind is that he wants to win this competition. He’s up for as many (games) as I need him for. He’s a real competitor and very important to us.”

Steyn went past the 100-point barrier for the season when he landed 16 points against the Blues last week.

It enabled the Sharks to end their overseas tour with a 29-23 victory and third triumph out of four on the road, leaving them five points clear at the summit ahead of their clash against the Stormers on Saturday.

Steyn was then among ten Sharks players who reported to a Springbok training camp in Durban earlier in the week, although he was mainly a spectator because of a problematic knee.

Following the three-day meeting, it was revealed by Springbok management that Steyn has been playing through the pain barrier due to a chronic knee dysfunction not something new, although White has been successfully managing the problem.

The Sharks chief admitted he was unsure whether Springbok counterpart Heyneke Meyer and his team will have the same attitude towards the 2007 World Cup-winner.

“The thing with Francois Steyn is he needs to be managed on a Monday and a Tuesday,” White added.

“I don’t know if the Springboks see the fact that he sits out on those days as a fair comparison to the other players that are having to train.

“I haven’t chatted to Frans in detail yet, but I think it’s highly unlikely if he can’t train Mondays and Tuesdays in a short turnaround week in and week out for a national team, they might not see that as a reason to pick him. With the amount of depth they have, maybe they feel they don’t need him.

“But for us he’s just so important.”

On Thursday, the Sharks will announce their team to play the Stormers at Kings Park.

He is playing with chronic knee injury and has to miss the first 2 days of practise in pain. 
His body has just played too much rugby and with 2 very severe injuries in the past and picking up the extra bulk, he is never going to be the same player he was when he was 19 years old. 
His missed tackles are more due to his lack of agility from a body that has allready seen to much wear and tear.
However he still adds allot of value,

 The knee injury can account for a lot of problems Steyn showed this year and it is admirable that he was is trying to help the team despite the injury - but ultimately he makes too many mistakes because of the fact that he is not physically 100% and that could become a major problem for th team .

The disgraceful attacks on Frans every day on this Board are not okay. The fact that so few posters have commented on this vendetta is disappointing. Jake has just made it abundantly clear how much he values Fran's contribution and how much discomfort he has  to go through to make that contribution. Perhaps that will help, but given the main protagonist nothing short of a snot klap is likely to have any effect. We are dealing with scum here.

Aaag  -  poor cry baby.   What is disgraceful about referring to Steyn's performances and deficiencies in some aspects of his game?   It is stating facts not fiction.  So people who criticize Steyn's performances is "scum".
you are at liberty to make false and really derogatory statements on all players you do not like and may be in competition with your favourites - and that is OK.   but when dares to say anything about Fransie - they are scum.   
Next time you go for other players - and the list is virtually endless - can we them call you scum?

Frans is a real gamer, for sure. Playing on an injury severe enough to keep him out of Bok contention. Sharks will miss his abrasiveness and confidence if he can't make it back for S15.
A Kockett / F Steyn halfback duo would be an interesting combination as they both play with the same self-belief and don't back down from anyone

There is no way that I called Steyn ever a "Fat Slug".   I said he is fat - which he is.   He may be your hero - but a under-performing hero is not above criticism for under-performance.

The scumbags Mozart and Dof Doos have no sense of humour,  I was making jokes about Alberts and De Jongh and they nearly had a fit.   
And then Mozart was crying like a baby because I have a negative point of view on the performances of Steyn and called him Fat Fransie.  
What a load of rubbish have we here.  They can lie and create fables about all players that may be in competition for Springbok selection with their favourites, but if anyone says anything negative of those the walls of Jericho came down and their wailing cries of anguish is unimaginable.  


And I already told Dof Doos - next time i need to have a slash,  I will do it in his face since he is crawling after anything I wrote as if that is the only topic on the boa rd for discussion.

One thing I will say Mike, you fooled me. Originally I thought you were a decent fellow, who  had some standards. It turns out you are scum. So we live and learn.
One of the things that  Jake  says about Frans that resonates,  is that he is a competitor. Competitors help win matches....the desire to compete is no less important in a team sport like rugby, than it is in golf or tennis. 
The absence of that instinct is what killed Spies as a contributor and is what makes JJ such a limited factor. These kind of players are happy to go through the motions, and check the scoreboard at the end to see what happened. A player like Frans by contrast is apparently willing to play through pain to get a result...and it's easy to see that competitive emotion on the field.

There are things that became clearer based on White's statement.  Steyn does not train on Mondays and Tuesdays with the squad and that accounts for one thing very clearly - the malfunctioning of the Sharks backline is constantly in evidence.   It also accounts for another thing.  Steyn looks good in the first 10 to 15 minutes in games he played in and then his performances deteriorated.   
White's argument centers around the positive influence that Steyn has on his team mates which influences their performances.  His own performances are statistically totally unsound and his physical condition impacts on his own lack of pace and his real inability to do what is expected from a 12 or 10 in both defense and attacking play.  
White probably weighed up the issue and decided that his positive  impact on his teammates outweighs his actual personal performances.   There is no way that an injured player can consistently perform well and that is evident in the case of Steyn.
White should be admired for his loyalty to players - but it is not clear whether that ultimately win the cup for the Sharks.    Now that the problem is public knowledge a lot more effort by opposing teams will be concentrated on Steyn and that could be seriously problematic in future.
