Jake White off to Japan

"Former Springbok coach Jake White is reportedly the favourite to become the new head coach of Japanese club Toyota Verblitz.

According to Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, representatives of the Japanese club visited White in France last week to finalise his appointment.

White currently coaches Top 14 club Montpellier but his tenure there will end when the current European season concludes.

It is believed that current England coach Eddie Jones suggested White as a suitable candidate for Toyota Verblitz.   Jones has strong ties in Japan, having previously coached Suntory Sungoliath as well as the Japanese national team.

Jones and White have a friendly association and White used Jones as a consultant during the 2007 Rugby World Cup when South Africa beat England 15-6 in the final.

White coached the Springboks between 2004 and 2007 and has also coached the Brumbies in Australia and the Sharks in South Africa."

White is getting lucky - but how long will he last in Japan.   He is probably planning to be Japan National coach - the same way he went about becoming the Aussie and England coach when those jobs became vacant.   A mere club coach  is not up to his ego as a coach.

The Du Plessis must be celebrating - their relationship with White was at best frosty.   And the same will be the case with Fat Fransie - he will again be accommodated by White when nobody really wanted to employ him. 

 That would be something to watch. This man, with his personality, in Japan. His habit of deflecting blame by singling out peculiar players, regardless of their performance on the pitch, will be unbearable if he targets japanese players.

Worth watching.

 Can one really hold a personality against someone when you need to evaluate his knowledge and craft?  I don't think one should.I do not know Jake and as a result cannot discuss his personality or reasons or lack of reasons / reasoning in situations.  What I do know and have experience of is the way media can portray a situation or a story and the spin they are able to put on something whilst the truth is not what they report, they report what they think will sell the publication or inspire a "click" to read.  In many cases controversial people will suffer because that very charackter can be used to sell the story and boost circulation.
That Jake is a master of his craft is no maybe, that much is evident from his performance as Springbok coach. He also presented quite a few workshop courses on training methods etc.  I know people who attended and they benefited much from the involvement.
People need to be able to apply their craft in an endeavour to make a living, that is what he is doing.  Japanese culture will very quickly demand he changes to suit the main-stream or he will inevitably become a statistic.  I surmise he is well aware that his box of tricks will one day cease to make magic and that he will have to tow the line if he is to be successful.

 JW has been wearing the burn of the tall poppy syndrome for years. A straight shooter who stands up for his beliefs even though at times it's comes across as being arrogant when he's not, will never find favour in SA circles, especially w ith SARU and the media.

Good for him, I hope it's a lucrative contract....the man has been treated shabbily by the South African rugby establishment.

 Funny - but Jake White's excuse for leaving the Brumbies was to be near his family.   He never made it to Stellenbosch - where his home is - got as far as Durban.   When he was fired by the Sharks he became a technical advisor to the Tonga team.  
Then off to Montpellier - his family reason seems to have vanished from sight.  Now off to Japan - even further away from his home than Canberra.

That was the real reason given by White for breaching his contract with the Brumbies - so what is rich when I state the truth?    You obviously does not like the truth because it hurts so much.  

No I generally believe a man's relationship with his family should not be speculated on by his critics.

He lied ... and so his family becomes fair game for us to "speculate" on.

The personality of a coach, as a man manager, is central. Coaches must bring their team together. They use different strategies for that. Some for example like to go into the besieged mentality, the us vs them stuff, which brings unity over a short term but often backs fire and leaves the dressing room a wrecked messs.

Now, this coach's case is a bit different. When confronted with losses that are tracked to his gameplans, he prefers to throw certain players under the bus to deflect the blame.
It has nothing to do with players' performances. Certain players could have played very poorly, making detrimental mistakes, they are preserved when they are coach's cronies. Some other players, whether they played good or as poor as others, are thrown under the bus as the cause for defeat.

This guy exudes a culture of scapegoating and he applies it to their own team, on peculiar players, regardless of performances.
Coaches usually do that by using external elements like journalists. They do that so that the whole team is protected.

This is why this guy is a big loss for SA. In the  context of SA, he would have quickened up the much needed termination of rugby.
Already, in Japan, if he is put under pressure and comes with the same treatment, he is going to have big issues.

 Trad, AC already failed here and in Japan and he was even faster in blaming his crew....at least JW has a RWC to show for his efforts. I'm no Jake fan, but give the man some credit.

 Credit was given. As a result, it was mentioned that Coetze should have been sacked in favour of this coach. Extended credit: this nomination will quicken the termination of rugby (Coetze is a fuse that will keep the boat floating)

Extended credit: this coach's man management sets him apart from all the other notorious coaches in all sports. Cant quote any other who manages players as this one.
Raining down on players is not uncommon, raining down on key players who did not deliver, raining down on the whole team when they are low etc.
This coach does it differently. He is fully credited for that.

It's the odd ball hard ar5ez who often deliver the best results. That holds true across many industries, not just sport. I've always felt that when the public lynch famous personalities for things that sit outside the sphere of whatever it is that made them celebrities, it just gives ammunition to the public's jealousy.
This is a big part of why I respect the hell out McCaw and can't stand the head boy JDV. McCaw did his job but didn't care to get his hands dirty when necessary. Sure it pissed us Saffas off at times when he bent or broke the rules. But he did it for the win I always felt as though he couldn't give a rats d1ck what people thought of him. And too right.
JDV on the other hand cared more about his head boy persona and his job in TV after his rugby days. 
Looking at it that way I'd say that Etsebeth is probably our best bet for a skipper who cares more winning than anything else. 
Still can't help but be annoyed by JDVs mug on TV though.

 Playing semantics. From the previous posts, it is obvious that shredded means the same as throwing under the train. It is useless to write again what was already written.

 Plum, I punted Eben for skip last year already...no other reason as by default. First name on my team sheet an no fool. I think captaincy might even raise his game.

 I do not need to talk up Jake White, all I will say is get your facts right Mr not so clever. It would seem to be the easiest thing to get right where Jake lives when in South Africa and it has not been Stellenbosh in the last 20 years, in fact will go as far as to say he has never had a residence there

 MO, Uncle Clever has a huge blind sopt when it comes to Jake, not that much of a fan of the man myself, but have respect for his work.

 DbDraad, fair comment but I do think bringing in his devorce is quite rediculas a mans personnel life has nothing to do with his coaching skills. I am friendly with both his ex wife and his current wife and believe me the paparazzi love to make the most of a breakdown in the marriage of someone in the spotlight!

 I hope Jake does well in Japan.
