The following from News24:-

"Former Springbok coach Jake White has identified the Stormers’ Damian Willemse as the flyhalf who can spearhead the Bok backline in the coming years.   White, who led the Boks to World Cup glory in 2007, expressed his opinion via a column for the All Out Rugby website.

He said the 19-year-old had impressed him in Super Rugby this year and called on Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus to pick the youngster.

“Damian Willemse is definitely the real deal. I had heard a lot about him from Johann Rupert, because his daughter Caroline is the one who found Damian and paid for him to go to Paul Roos, but it’s only now that I’m back in South Africa on holiday that I’ve been able to watch him in Super Rugby. He ticks all the boxes and what I like most is that he’s quick. I know people say that he’s brave on defence and he kicks nicely, but one thing that South Africa has lacked for a long time is a really quick No 10,” White wrote.

White insists Willemse’s age should not count against him, giving examples of former flyhalf greats to have played international rugby from a young age.

“Bok coach Rassie Erasmus will go to another two World Cups in the next six years and it’s a no-brainer - Willemse is the guy for the No 10 jersey. If we go with a flyhalf who is now 19, then we’ll be in a situation similar to what England had with Jonny Wilkinson, Australia had with Stephen Larkham and the All Blacks had with Dan Carter - the same 10 for a long time.”
This is a bit late in the day for White to identify Willemse as Springbok flyhalf - but in essence he is correct.   He spoke at length  about the lack of pacy flyhalfs - yet when he was in charge of the Springboks and the Sharks he went all out for slow flyhalfs.
However, I think by now that Willemse is on top of Rassie's list as Springbok flyhalf.  Problem is that Willemse is in the Under 20  WC squad being played in June 2018 - so I am not sure what SARU would do in that case.   I think that starting developing a squad for the Springboks should take precedence in this case.

Hmmm when Jake was at the Springboks, he 'went all out for slow flyhalfs'. Now lets see.....the guy who played most during his tenure was Jaco van der Westhuizen, who had issues but certainly not pace. Perhaps the second choice was a slug....but no, that was Andre Pretorius who played most of 2006. Not solid but brilliant in open field, with a step not unlike Willemse. And of course Butch, not a kicking flyhalf either.....and then of course there was Meyer Bosman's mother. Another total crock of shyte from Tokkie.

Interesting. How could one be expected to pay any attention to what a coach, who knows about backline play, have to say about a flyhalf?

As per normal the stupid comes through again.   Van d er Westhuizen was not a speed merchant and neither was Pretorius and definitely not James either,   His choice at the Sharks was slower than slow - Fransie of all people.

Your dribble can only be regarded as small-minded pettiness and BS

Van der Westhuizen was fast enough to comfortably play fullback....Pretorius was actually very quick, particularly off the mark....Butch was deceptively quick and strong. Your bs has just been outed again.....there is a simple solution, stop.

I could be wrong, but did Jake White not called on Eddie Jones to assist him with coaching of the Springbok backline? .... that is why Jake turned Allister Coetzee into a  'cosmetic' coach. If that is true, then Jake's opinion on Willemse does not carry much weight.

Well I don't think Jake is a technical expert in attacking back play...but he made great player choices....Habana to the wing, JP, Fury and Jean as his centres, brought back Monty, found a way to use Butch. Defensively he was ahead of his time with the rush defence which is now widely used.eg now by the Bools vastly improving Kriel's effectiveness on defence. During the period he never had Eddie's assistance he won the TN once and was within 5 minutes of winning it again. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt on backline competence.

No - I merely study what happened in practice and then unlike you make an objective assessment.  In White's case he had a mixed bag - won the 2004 Tri-Nations without showing much iro backline play - was bad in 2006 showing zero iro backline play.

Then got Eddie Jones who was told by the players themselves tha t he has taught them things they never heard before - inclusive of White,   Went through the WC with the help of Eddie Jones.

Then went to the Brumbies - where the backline and attack coaching was done  by  Larkham.   From there went to the Sharks - where the 2014 Rugby Championship ended in disgrace and got fired because of among others backline coaching  deficiency,

Enough said.

Willemse is a class player. I say give him a Bok Jersey. I mean The Boks for years have had failed experiements at flyhalve. Abs have the best in the world atm. I Think Willlemse could be a world beater. He seems the kinda player who thrives in a challenging environment.

The 2004 Trinations had 26 tries....13 by the Boks, 4 by New Zealand, 9 by Oz. And of the Boks 13 tries, 10 were scored by backs.....so the Bok backs scored more tries than the whole NZ or Oz teams. In WC 2007 South Africa was second to NZ with 33 tries....27 of which were scored by backs, more tries than any full team except Oz and NZ. Habana was the tournament's top try scorer. Bok back play under White was the best it has ever been during the professional era.

From what we've seen so far, he is undoubtedly the best of the sorry lot.

Making the step up to test level is another story. I would give him a shot though.

Problem with your logic Mozert. IS by 2009 the new law variations were brought in. Which suited a more expansive game. In 2009 Boks utilized a more kick chase gameplan. By 2011 the law variations suited NZ expansive game more. Boks seemed more dominant with the tight five play. And Morne kicking penalties. So I am not sure Boks scoring more tries happened post 2009.

Stop the rubbish - Eddie Jones influence in the 2007  WC increased the try-scoring - especially by backline players.   For the rest try-scoring by backs were few and far between.   The mere presence of Jones showed that even White did not trust his own ability to coach backline players.

Willemse has moved ahead of the pack judging by his Cape Town performance. He appears to have it all. Lets see how he goes. He must at least be included in the squad Rassie picks.

Look at White said about the issue of speedy flyhalfs.    Van der Westhuizen was one of his flyhalfs and he seemed to ignore him in his comments.

I checked the 13 tries scored by the Springboks in 2004 - as per normal your figures are inaccurate of the 13 tries 8 was scored by backs and of those one was a hattrick of tries by Joubert in the Pretoria test.

It was during a period when the Springboks had some superiority up front, with a settled backline with Barry and Joubert as centers and De Villiers playing on the wing and the backline tries had more to do with individual brilliance and very little to do with backline coaching..

Now answer me one question - why did the players said in 2007 that Jones taught them things about backline play which none of their coaches has never even mentioned before and that include White.

It will only be morons who regard White as a good backline coach.  He never was and n ever will be.

Vs NZ...14/8/04......Marius Joubert (3), JdV, Paulse As per normal when you accuse me of inaccurate figures, the inaccurate figures are your's Tokkie. Man you can't even count to 10. What a loud mouthed dope.

Almost impossible to quantify the value Eddie Jones brought to the 2007 Bok backline. However, I know that after it became public knowledge that SARU refused to give Jones any official recognition, the Bok backline discussed this and Brian Habana gave his Bok blazer to Jones.... a wonderful gesture.

Ja ou Blikkies a nice gesture. I also recall Bakkies going out of his way to play in a BaaBaas game to honour Jake White. These guys obviously respected their coaches.

Some of the Boks bad reputation and perhaps resultant over penalization may be down to a few factors. Roedoelf Straulies 2002 Boks, and the Justice for Bakkies saga. The Eztebeth glare down stuff is maybe not the best image.

There is no way that White did not flop as a backline coach when coaching the Sharks and Montpellier.  So if you do not appreciate that you must really be blind.

That was the main reasons why he was fired by the Sharks and Montpellier did not renew his contract.

For me Jake was an inspired coach. I don't care that he did not peal the oranges carry the bags or book the hotels. He was a manager/coach who lead with a vision. His quote backs coach Coetzee was forced on him, it was a tactically astute move to get Jones... a foreigner in to assist. This is a strength not a weakness in his management.
The interesting point is the Poms back line play is sterile. Brown is their only x factor player and he was on the bench in the last two games. Jones is tanking but does not have the same vision to put up his hand despite the blank cheque the RFU have given him.
Willemse is a great prospect but will he be properly managed to achieve his potential..

White won the World Cup. That to me speaks of a success story.

Whatever was needed to achieve this was brought in. Coetzee was the backline coach ... not White ... so lets not cover up the incompetence of Coetzee ... let's not blame White for the quota's inabilities.

White won the World Cup ... on his first attempt ... unlike Henry who failed at every attempt and in the end had to get someone to hand it to him out of pity .
