Serfontein lost to SAby Brenden Nel 19 April 2017, 11:12

Springbok midfielder Jan Serfontein may be the latest player lost to South Africa after he turned down a dual deal with the Vodacom Bulls and SA Rugby this week.

Serfontein, who has already been linked with offers from Toulon, Montpellier and Northampton, was offered a “tripartite deal” where SA Rugby and the Bulls would each pay a part of his salary to try and keep him in South Africa.

But both parties confirmed to Supersport.com that Serfontein turned them down and asked for permission to negotiate an offer abroad, making him the latest South African to head overseas.

The Bulls have been trying hard to keep him in South Africa and along with the Springboks are known to have made a very competitive offer for the midfielder.

Serfontein returned to the field earlier this year and has played for the Bulls in this year’s competition, scoring two tries in his return to the field against the Sunwolves at Loftus Versfeld.

Since then he has made steady progress but is still seen as a key player, especially in terms of the midfield defence and was definitely part of coach Allister Coetzee’s plans for the June tests.

Serfontein has played 26 tests and will be hoping he plays in 4 more during the current international season if he is to reach the magical 30 test mark and still be eligible for the Springboks while based overseas.

SA Rugby and the Bulls confirmed to supersport.com together that Serfontein had turned down the offer.

A SA Rugby spokesperson confirmed that SA Rugby and the Vodacom Bulls have offered an "improved contract" to Springbok centre Jan Serfontein.

"However, the player informed the parties concerned of his desire to explore playing opportunities abroad, and in view of this, Jan has therefore opted not to renew the national contract offered to him,” a SARU spokesman said.

Serfontein is contracted until the end of the season and will continue playing at the Bulls until his contract ends.

He's made the right decision.

Coetzee prefers De Jongh and De Allende to him.

Time to go abroad and coin it.

We have a number of inside centres that offer more than the one-dimensional Serfontein.
Perhaps with a professional backline coach, Serfontein would have been better. Unfortunately, he is a one-tricky pony. (baby donkey)
The lions have Rohan and Vorster who are both much better. The Stormers have Delande- and the other Duplessis something or other.
Serfontein does not have the speed or brains to play outside centre either where we have some decent talent pulling through.
Early days for Viljoen at 13- but surely better than a makeshift Serfontein at 13.

Any rugby player, good - bad or mediocre has a limited shelf life and life after rugby is not always clear.  So, while the going is good - make hay while the sun shines.
I think he realised he ain't going nowhere fast and going to Europe is good pension money - no one can really blame him.

No loss at all. The concern is that the powers that be thinks he is a loss....how clueless are these clowns!?

Serfontein made a number of poor career decisions.   His first mistake was to go and play for the Bulls - with Ludeke as the coach.   That really destroyed him in developing into a good backline player.
Ludeke was the great exponent of the kick and chase game and requiring from the inside center to crashball should he by accident get the ball.   That means that he was part of a dead backline for the Ludeke years.
Then his second mistake was to play at outside center under the Meyer regime.   He saw even less of the ball and his role turned into having to defend only.  Meyer was even worse than Ludeke as an exponent of the kick nd chase game and he dded to this by ordering his scrummies to pass ball back to the forwards.   In the WC the scrummie made 41 passes to other players and 19 to the flyhalf - whose only role was to kick the ball away.
Both coaches should have had strong backline coaches who knew what they were doing, but they chose Matfield as attack coach - a position he held until then end of the WC.   So what chance did the poor bugger have to make a success as a center.  My assessment basically zero.
However, if he did join a franchise where the coach knew how to utilize backline players he could have developed into one of the best inside centers.   Sorry to see him go - but he is on a dead end road with the Bulls and it is to his advantage to go to Europe where he may end up with a decent backline coach that can enhance his career and not the dead heads he suffered from to date.

It is indeed a sad day to see any SA player in any sport having to go overseas and turn his back on representing his country.
But those are the times and political climate we are living in.
Sadly.

The rule is simple. When you post first on a thread, I don't post. When I post first, you don't post. It's the only way to stop these silly spats. Kindly cooperate.

Go and ask Ed about that rule you imposed.   I will not comment on threads you started - not worthwhile since they are all twisted idiocy- but you have no right to impose a rule or are you the board dictator taking over the responsibility of the editor?    Please note I ignore all your BS when I did post on other threads - even if you and your fellow-mongs make postings  under the thread.

It's not a rule I imposed.....I can't impose rules. But it is the rule that will stop these spats, what's your objection? The alternative is to make a genuine commitment to be civil on both of our parts. I have always been willing to do that....Plum and I disagree on lots of things but we have a civil debate. I assure you if you take that approach, I will do the same. But that would have to extend to all the stirring as well. . This is not working for either of us. I am open to any of the above solutions.

The solution is to be civil and let other viewpoints prevail and contend those without getting personal as you are often doing making homophobic slurs, etc.   I tried this year to be civil and you broke the effort down.
I have no bad relations bar with you, Ceradyne and The Truth.   I tried to ask them not to always attack my viewpoints by diversion of topics and all they do is to follow my posts and make a diversion from the topic under discussion.   That do not work out.  Go through the whole site and find a place that they did anything bar attacking my posts.   That is very bad behavior - especially if they change the topic of discussion completely.
I differ with many posters - but that does not lead to spats and insults.
However, I am prepared to try and settle the issue on a civil basis - but then it must be on both sides.   In the past we tried and it did not last a month before the insults started flowing on your part - even though I pleaded with you to refrain from contravening our agreement on the score.
Do you think I enjoy the spats?   Frankly I don't and would rather see civil discussions on issues and not nastiness.   I am prepared to do anything to avoid insulting posts and hope you do so too.

Okay Mike lets try that. I can't speak for Truth, Vlag and Pakie, you will have to work out your own arrangement with them. But let me make this observation, Truth, Vlag and you have spats going, not unlike our spat. Pakie on the other hand has simply fact checked you.....his business deals with investigation of accidents....and he provides visual evidence for all his points. His role has been to provide evidence nothing more....and he has the training to do that. . Good luck with the latest truce, I will try to find areas of agreement and there are a few.

Serfonteins unfortunate error was to accept the bulle largesse and join a group who have little idea about to play the game.Serfontein would have thrived in a Lions environment. He was a great at under 21 level.
A change of scene could do him the world of good and save his career.

Mike and Moz. I think it's safe to say that any truce between you 2 is a waste of time. Accept the fact that you can't get along. Either embrace the fact and keep at it, or just give up on a bad deal and start ignoring each other.  The rest of the board are used to it by now and although some might get anoyed from time to time, most wold feel something missing when it disappears. I laugh my arse off at most of the stuff and ignores it when it gets stale. This place is a hoot!

Another victim of the quota policy.

By the way, this move shows once more if needed that the lack of internal demand for rugby in SA does not allow for a SA 15 squad.

This is the type of players foreigners are interested in when they think of signing a SA player to raise their profile and sell tickets.
Barely the type of players that can be used to build a team on.
SA players will have to shape themselves to that model though as they want to take a flight away.

Time to terminate rugby in SA.
