Another season of S18 is almost over and Jantjies has yet again been the best 10 in the land by a big margin. Is he still Lambi's understudy? Are we in agreement that the qualms about his BMT are nothing but speculation and that three years of evidence now heavily outweighs ancient rumors? Faf and Jantjies were up against the supposed best 9-10 combo in the world yesterday and they made them look flat and unimaginative. It has been years since we've seen this kind of combo in an SA team and I for NE am glad. Glad that Meyer watched that game yesterday and realised what a SHYTE team he took to the WC. Glad that a few brave men have, as usual, lit the way for the rest of the sheep to follow. But here is what makes me the happiest. I've been at a good few Lions games now, some in Pretoria, some in JHB and elsewhere. Never in my life have I seen a kicker or any player stay on the field after the game and run routines, practice kicking and hit tackle bags. The Lions do this. They believe that they are better and back that belief up by working harder than just about anybody else. It's a fking inspiration and I admire their team for that. Watching Elton tear up in the post match interview yesterday one could see how much it means to him. It's a cruel life when the one person you'd want to see you play isn't there in his seat by the side of the field where he always was. Gives me a bloody lump in my throat.

Listen to this podcast between Jan de Koning and Loffie Eloff where they discus a great number of issues surrounding the selection of the Bok squad. Also relevant topics like why they prefer Jantjies, their view on Johan Goosen, Mostert vs PSdT, the drop in Strauss' performance , etc., etc.

Note: There is another podcast immediately following the first one on more or less the same topics. but here Ibrahim gives his views.

Jantjies is currently the form Springbok, not just flyhalf
That was maybe the best performance by a South African flyhalf ever in Super Rugby. He had an excellent all round game. The only thing I have not seen from Jantjies is long touch finders.

He must certainly be the starting Springbok. Pollard could play at 12 to get some tips. The revolving Delande is hopelessly out of form- although that surely must be taken by a Lion

Blikkies ....an interesting piece, with almost complete consensus between the two experts. It all seems to easy, but I'm a little bit sceptical as de Kooning was a huge Lomp, Step, Kriel, JJ proponent.

Another season of S18 is almost over and Jantjies has yet again been is probably now the best 10 in the land by a big margin country right now. (Fixed)

Your fangirl panties are hanging out "by a big margin".

Jantjies was probably the fourth best flyhalf last year after Pollard, Lambie, and Lionel Cronje. An even though he is probably the best right now, he still has exploitable weaknesses.

Plum, you have to understand there are so many ignorant dolts like Moffie and the Truth_Fairy who have been slagging Jantjies off for years now and refuse to admit they have egg all over their stupid faces.

Just laugh at the clowns.

Jantjies impressed against the Saders and he had a cracker on Saturday.
Like him or not ... he IS most definitely the best 10 we have.
He may be a confidence player and that could be a problem ... however if managed properly ... he could well be the 10 we've all been waiting for.
I loved his passion after the match.
Gooooooooo Jan tjies!!!

Plum, Moffie has a long history of slagging off players and then . . . when they prove him wrong and apply liberal amounts of egg to his fat face, he suddenly starts pretending that not only did he always rate them but he in fact discovered them.

Examples are Jaque Fourie, Handre Pollard, Damian De Allende, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jaco Kriel and now, Elton Jantjies.

Just watch . . . in a few months time he'll be pretending he was the first to rate the Du Preez twins and Skuna Notshe!

LMAO!

Yes ... I guess you guys do deserve some credit.
I had my doubts ... but in my defence I never saw Jantjies play a match quite like that.
I saw him make a complete stuff up at the Stormers ... I saw him shank a ball from thirty meters out ... it must have bounced a good 5 times before it reached the posts.
I saw him crack under pressure several times over.
The Jantjies of Saturday is not the Jantjies of last year. I most certainly hope we can retain the Jantjies of Saturday for this coming weekend.

 And back to Jantjies.

Yes, he is probably the best right now (a repetition of what I said earlier)... but he does have exploitable weaknesses. If you can't understand the fact that I think he is the best right now, the you really struggle with English.

Maybe this will help:

 @CC

Yeah it'd be easy to take the credit. But to me it's also quite obvious that a lot of what Jantjies does is made possible by the other 14 men. So i'll hold off on bragging.

My summary is that if one were to put Lambi, Pollard, the Lambi lookalike form the Stormers or Boshoff behind that Lions pack with Faf delivering the kind of service that he does then we'd probably be singing their praises too. We only have one example(Jantjies & Lions) to go on though and the rest is just speculation. So we gotta give Elton the props he deserves.

I laugh every time i remember that huge Bulls entourage of  a coaching staff scratching their heads while the Lions decimated them at home. Probably one of my favorite moments this season. The faces in that coaches box...now that was priceless.

It just sucks to know that poor coaching systems and bad game plans are giving us the wrong impressions of some very good players. That's the down side to all this for me i suppose.

Simply because what we saw out there on Saturday wasn't a team. It was a collection of players based on nothing. There is no core to the team. The only way in this short time. To build a team is to base it to some extent on one of our franchises. We have often done this with the Bools....only the Lions fit the bill right now.

Secondly if we don't try these players now, when do we try them? Normally I'm for winning matches, but we don't want another 4 years with team controversies....throw them in the water, let's see who swims. Given our poor Super performance there will be more time for the team to gel before the RC if some of these changes have to be reversed.
Thirdly it will rev up Ellis Park and what better venue to debut for Lions players. Let's go for broke, if we lose the series....so what? We are in transition and experimenting. So play this team:
WillieCombrinkMapoeJanse van RensburgMvovoJantjiesFafRedlinghuisMarxBeastEtzebethStephanieKrielLouwWhiteley
And if it all flops we can put our best shot for the RC in for next week, but at least the air will have been cleared. And there is just a chance this may work.

The point is until players prove they can compete at top level, they haven't made their case. Jantjies never made his case until this year with the Lions.
The thing that embarrasses some posters is they cling onto sentimental choices like Luke Watson......others having once not rated a player like Schalk are too small to change their views.

The intelligent approach is to be critical, because most players don't make it to test level.....but be fair in your evaluation of players' performances. And to be open to new inputs, some of which we are likely to get in the final. Be honest, be observant...be fair.

It's simple really.

There is a big difference between anything else and test match rugby.
One is tested in so many different ways at test level ... and many solid rugby players with great potential have been found wanting.
Just off the top of my mind ... Jan Serfontein.
Many others though seem strangely capable of actually learning how to be good ... a great test match rugby player.
Playing against the likes of a depleted Irish side is not a decent test. It counts for nothing. Playing against the All Blacks will most definitely be a test and we'll soon see who's left standing.

For some players their physical credentials strongly suggest success....Etzebeth is stronger than most players, Habana was faster. But most players are at parity physically with their competitors. So we have to see if they have a way of contributing meaningfully.
And it's not a static thing....in the S15 last year Allende was offloading regularly, finding gaps, finding ways to score tries. This year he is running into brick walls. So while last year we were wondering if his defence could be brought up to par....this year we are wondering if he has lost the whole plot.

Tests are a big step up and I think Combrink and Faf made a promising start, but as you say the RC is the test.

Moz you ate correct. But really there are three Kiwi club teams that probably rank in the top five the world among test teams. So yeah, obviously test rugby is a step up, but players who are doing well against the likes of the Chiefs, Canes etc are most likely test quality. That's my view anyway. I felt the Jaguars this year she'd a good bit of light on the actual difference between club and teat level. That crap Jaguars team who beat a full strength Ireland and beat us last year...yet got demolished in the S18 this year. It actually confuses me a tad when I think about it. Haha. What do you glean from that Moz?

No idea why the Jaguares were so bad. The Bargies dominate at scrum time and use that to springboard their attack. The Jags didn't look so hot in the scrums in the few matches I watched. But that can't be the whole story.
With regard to the Chiefs etc, there is still quite a gulf to an AB team....but even an AB team is vulnerable to teams that attack them aggressively. We come close at home using that tactic in 2013.....and won because of Pollard's running in 2014.
Because you are a great running team does not mean that your defence can't be broken down. We have played the ABs close under HM but at the WC we were content to let them run at us.....it's hard to defend a great running team for 80 minutes.....you need to force them to defend.

Disagree, Jantjies has always had it, nothing has changed.....the only thing that has changed is that he has found a credible coach who knows how to get the best out of him, who has empowered him to play his natural game......something that will never happen under Coetzee for the Boks.......we saw what happened to Jantjies under Coetzee at the Stormers.

Jantjies was as good last year for the Lions as he has been this year......useless Meyer was too stupid to pick up on that......much like he was with Faf and Jaco Kriel

So Jantjies weakness is being harassed. Well done. You figured out that no 10 in the entire history of rugby has enjoyed being harassed. Did that take you lads long to figure out? Wait, except for the the golden boy Carter who loved it so much that he regularly kicked a 100m clearance whilst upside down in a tip tackle. PS Never talk smack boetie. It'll always come back to bite you.
