Jantjies as Flyhalf

"Legendary former All Black No 8 Zinzan Brooke has questioned Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies’ ability to lead his side’s attack.

Brooke, who played 100 times (58 Tests and 42 matches) for New Zealand between 1987 and 1997, was commenting ahead of Saturday’s Rugby Championship game between the old rivals at Newlands.

Via a column for the All Blacks’ official website, Brooke said he was impressed by South Africa’s performance against Australia in Bloemfontein last week, but was reluctant to heap too much praise on the Springboks.

“I was actually pretty impressed with how the Springboks and Wallabies played last week. There was a consistency and grittiness that I haven't seen in a game featuring either side for some time, so it was great to see it. Before we go and give them too much praise, though, they have been in this situation before. The end result? The wrong end of a 57-0 hiding,” Brooke wrote.

Brooke, 52, also has doubts over Jantjies’ consistency as a Test-level No 10.

“I've said it once and I'll say it again, Elton Jantjes has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. His hairstyle is fantastic, but his ability to lead the troops? Questionable at best. He needs to focus on getting South Africa on the front foot, and has serious work to do to be consistently on top.”

The above clearly confirm the doubts about Jantjies as Springbok flyhalf 

shared by many local supporters/rugby fans.   I have reservations about it for a while now and at one stage wrote that Jantjies in fact is not a thinking player - rather a  player that has been taught about various options - but he does not seem to know what options to use.    
Against weaker teams this issue is not as problematic as it is against stronger teams.   
Personally I do not think Jantjies is a good prospect for the future and am hopeful that Willemse and Bosch turns out to be better.       

Nothing new here. We all know Jantjes blows hot and cold. Unfortunately, the rugby champs is not the time to be blooding new no.10's, that should have been done long ago already. At this point, Jantjies is all we have due to short sighted coaches and quotas. 

 
He blows hot and cold in Super Rugby ... he however only blows cold in test matches.

I would much rather take a chance on someone else than keep going with this test match loser.

 
Amazing how so many people across the rugby globe can see what ails us ... but those closest to the problem have no clue.

Again, who else though?

Pollard has hardly played in two years, Lambie's head is made of cheese, Willemse and Bosch are very green and would it be detrimental to throw them into the pressure cooker of test rugby?
Lionel Cronje is the only viable option I see

Jantjies has done well this year. Playing outside Hougaard in a test match is an achievement in itself. 
I am not convinced about Serfontein, I would rather see a more creative inside centre to help organise the backline on attack.
Serftontein made critical errors last week that destroyed about 3 tries.Delande played better last week after he replaced Serfontein.

Good point SB, if Janjties is tempramental surrond him with a 9 and 12 he's comfortable with (Cronjé and RJvR)

Give him that 9 and 12, and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work but he has been he form SA fly half in Super Rugby and deserves that chance

Yes AgPD, if the Bok pack has a good game- Jantjies could open up the game- especially with RJVR on his outside. 
Jantjies has been playing outside a losing lineout and pack- against the All Blacks for some- but has still played better than most. 

All the AB's have to do is hit him in the first few minutes of the game and he will chicken out for the rest of the game.
This guy is, without doubt, one of the major failures in Springbok rugby this season.
Sure he has looked good to some supporters when playing against Argentina and so would anyone against weak teams.
He is scared sells his centres out with suicide passes or they get the ball and the opposing players at the same time plus he misses crucial touch kicks not to mention missing game-winning three-pointers.
Not an international standard player now never will be or ever was.
Even if he was playing behind the AB forwards he would still blow the game because he is not a test flyhalf.
Cronje has more than earned his call-up and has both the skill and courage to make the difference to the team as a whole.
Now could someone please explain how the heck ChilliBoy gets a call-up????????????

 Who else is their? Elton is a decent super player. OF course he was outplayed in the 2016 final by Barrett. And I Think Richie outplayed him in the 2017 decider. Pollard stands out. But limited game time. So I Think Elton is your best chance right now. Abs have been gifted by Beudan of course. Lima is a solid back up. Boks seem to be struggling for specilist players tbh. 

The simple answer is why include someone who has continually failed at test level given that a guy like Cronje who played in a weak SR 19 team and played well deserves a shot.

Lionel Cronjie has rarely been the first or even 2nd choice at any union- other than the Kings. T eams probably saw this game as a chance to rotate their players, and some underestimated the Kings.
Jantjies has 2 SuperRugby finals in a row, and has been involved in more expansive backline play seen in South Africa for many a year.
The Lions are a team that can put 30 points on an opponent in 20 minutes when they click. They have come back from matches where they look dead and buried- or they just keep the tempo up for the whole 80 minutes and run the team off their feet.
If the Boks forwards can lay a solid platform with good 1stphase, and quick recycling at the ruck-  to give Jantjies time and space- and he had a better inside centre- we could see lots of backline tries.

 Sharkbok, I agree with your assessment of Jantjies. No fly-half can do it alone and if under constant pressure all fly-halves will have their problems. He does need to stop running laterally so often though as this reduces the space of the outside backs. It's fine as long as he has a straight runner cutting into the line & he passes to him but often this is not the case.
