Interesting call, but you can bet your bottom dollar Jake will send a big runner down Jantjies throat. I don't question his ability ball-in-hand, unlike the other myths, Jantjies actually has a good feel for operating flat in front of the gainline. But then again this will help with the aerial battle. It looks like Ackers is preparing for a seige. Tactically a smart move, but not a poular one I would imagine, what with leaving out the Springbok incumbent and all that.

Er Dave....the kudos go for results, not being selected. Jantjies will fail again.....but as long as Boshoff does the kicking, at least fans will be spared watching Jantjies bottle out as the pressure rises.

i recon its a good call too, boshoffs boot has been real entertaining, but thats cos he was in a team who all pundits bar rooy had pegged for the wooden spoon.
while boshoff is solid, he dosent really have the attacking nous of goosen, lambie and even janties himself.
but if janties has a bad game, the wolves will be licking their lips.
really like the lions coach, plays to his teams strengths, unlike other coaches in the spXV.

The Sharks love it when other teams donate generous presents to them - and Earl Silky Hands is the best present the Lions could ever have given them.

The question Jantjies asks of other teams is: do I run over him, round him or just ignore him altogether?

We will see. The Brumbies ambushed him last year and failed, so it may not be such an easy thing. Though I do doubt him.

It has been 5 months since Earl Silky Hands played his last game. Is that the "some time" you are referring to?

Jantjies is the worst defender in the SuperXV, he is worse than Naas Botha at tackling, although they both have the same approach of just falling over and hoping the opposition player just trips over them

This is going to be a "Vasbyt" game for the Lions with that pivot at #10.
Lets see what he has left after Alberts takes him out the first time.
That's hoping he catches the ball whilst looking out for you know who!

I would never call Earl Silky Hands who had a miss tackle ratio in excess of 20% in Super 15 last year as being even a reasonable defender. "ts been some time since Jantjies had an issue with his defence,"
BS - that is why I refer to the "some time" being during the past five months - since he was poor up to that time ..
07 Mar 2014, 05:45#17
Saff - kudo's on the call. Must say I am surprised Ackerman made this change. Sharks are a very "direct" team. Jantjies has underwhelmed me for most of his career but it would be great to see him play well after the tough year last year with the Stormers and the death of his dad which absolutely affected his play in my mind.

I wish Jantjies well but as a distant observer he seems to be shaky as a player. I agree with those who question putting him on the field at 10 against the Sharks (hardly a soft entry back into the game). Plus, Boshof was doing well so what problem is the coach trying to fix?

Well said bob - we are well served in being rid of jantjes.
The Sharks will win this. Jantjes will be under great pressure so lets see how he goes. To me he lacks mental tougness and he makes a lot of foolish moves some of which come off!Boschoff has been the most effective flyhalf in the comp thus far.
07 Mar 2014, 09:52#21
To me it looks as though Johan Ackerman is stressing out over 1 loss..Why change the team that has made a bit of history so far?
The Lions are playing the Sharks in Durban. Arguably the best SA team on current form. Why would you want to play the risk factor that is Jantjes when the best shot the Lions have of winning this is a kicking display that saw the Lions beat the Stormers? I dont see the Lions running in 20 points in tries. Their best bet is to keep the scoreboard ticking with some pot drop goals and Boshoff will need to be their man.
Look, I could be wrong and the Lions could come out and produce some slick, champagne rugby but I just dont see them toppling the Sharks. Not in Durban at least. They shouldn't anyway.
Course Dave thinks this is a master stroke by Johan Ackerman because Dave is a fuck wit! No more to be said. Just take a look at his take on guys like Habana and JDV..

The Lions are going to firstly try to negate the battle for field osition, hence the selection of Boschoff at 15 and another capable kicker at 10; they are loading their backline for a kicking dual, very wise! Next they are going to out scrap the Sharks at the breakdown and degenerate the game into a street fight. If they can disrupt the Shark's flow of possession and upset their structures then they stand a chance of picking them off with the boot or notching the odd try if it comes about.
"Jantjies is the worst defender in the SuperXV, he is worse than Naas
Botha at tackling, although they both have the same approach of just
falling over and hoping the opposition player just trips over them"
@Sharkbok: The very worst? Goosen has yet to dominate ONE contact situation in his entire senior career to date! He is the worst player I have ever seen in contact, period. And I mean that literally.
07 Mar 2014, 13:18#23
Sun-Tzu, all very well in theory but its not like the Lions only have to halt the Sharks forwards. The Sharks are superior to the Lions from numbers 1 through 23 and the Sharks forwards wont just allow the Lions to dictate terms. Lions might find themselves getting bullied if they try that tactic or otherwise, blown out the game at every turn.
Lions dont enjoy a great record against the Sharks having won just once in Super rugby. They will need a lot of luck and the Sharks to be badly off their game to win this one. If the Sharks do not win convincingly here, we are not the champion team we are thought to be!
Stranger things have happened but like I said, the Sharks should win this game relatively comfortably if they pitch up to play!If we are off our game, there can be an upset but I think the Sharks will be hungry to play again after a very early bye week.

They have to front up to the challenge, and that means playing to their strengths and using their resources. If they heed your post they won't even bother turning up at all, and that's no way to meet this challenge! The Sharks have all the tools at hand, but the Lions do have a genuine presence at ruck time and they do have the kickers to fight the aerial battle. The Lions managed to handle a Bulls pack that comprehensively out muscled the Sharks! Ackers is on the right track regardless of the result. He sees the threat and has proactively done something about it. I think the Lions will have their moments.

The real player at flyhalf avoiding contact at ALL costs is Morne Steyn. That is why he NEVER attacks the gain line and his tackle stats are way below par.

Your tackle statistics were exposed long ago and Morné plays much flatter. Hell, I even posted a video where he avoided the pass against New Zealand because of team-mate obstruction, he ran it right into heavy traffic. Michael you're little campaign against Morné is an embarrassment! Every word that comes out of your mouth is a lie, almost all have been directly exposed.

And every time you open your mouth the shit flows like lava from it. I do not have a campaign against Morne - I just write the truth and not fairy tales about what he actually produces on the field of play.
A mediocre flyhalf with only one asset - his goal kicking.
08 Mar 2014, 12:08#28
Come again Sun-Tzu.?? You lost me at ...the Lions handled the Bulls pack and the Sharks never...You do realise the Sharks won very easily and the Lions scored a consolation try in the death to bring respectability to the scoreline...
I think you will find that the Sharks were dominant on the day.

The Bulls were physically running over the Sharks. Had the Bulls posed any kind of threat ball-in-hand it would have been a fearesome contest, the cSharks won comfortably on the scoreboard because they hung on in the face of repeated heavy drives and picked them off from turnovers. The Sharks in no way dominated the Bulls pack. Then we had the Lions who comprehensively out scraped the Bulls, the turned it into a dog fight. What have we learned from this? The Lions have a very real capacity to disrupt possession. It doesn't matter how fantastic you are in the backs, if the quality of possession diminishes, your ball presentation suffers, your attack becomes slow, the defence resets strongly, you have more kicking... it's a chain reaction and I have seen it time and time again. The odds are firmly against the Lions but it would be foolish to disregard what I have stated. I doubt very much Jake would be so lax in his preparations as you would be.

Tbh yeah,Jantjies isn't that bad.Last year wasn't a good year for him with the loss of his father and every one could see the impact it made. The problem how ever is that he cant cross the barrier in to big game pressure. He crumbles when the heat is turned on.It us why he failed at test level cause he panicked.Every one could see it.If he can beat that, then yeah he will be really good. But we will see.Like Sun Tzu siad,JW is gonna send every monster he has down Jantjies'es way.AKA Alberts,Kankovski and Coetzee. All in all...I wish the guy all the best.

The sooner the Lions forget about Jantjies at 10 - the better it will be for them. While he was flyhalf the Lions backline really was nit functioning properly - when Boshoff took over at flyhalf the backline performances improved drastically.
