According to the Stormers mag the fastest Stormer in 2012 was Habana at 4.77 for the 40, followed by Jean at 4.8 and Aplon at 4.83.

Among the strongest relative to body weight was de Jongh with bench press and squats  1.7 times his body weight.

The data is a little old now, but even back then we were hearing Jean is slow and de Jongh is weak. My guess is they are still right up there.

Shame he can't replicate those squats and bench presses on the rugby pitch as per getting pushed beyond the advantage line by opposition.

I assume that this was for the backs only?

Im surprised that Aplon was quicker than Jean.

Good to know though.

Flash it was for forwards and backs, but the backs pressed more relative to their body weight. Kitshoff for example did the heaviest squat at 260 kgs.

Bench pressing and speed aplenty - but Juan has an extremely poor record in making line breaks and scoring tries and an even worse record in defence - fancy descriptions to explain that away won't help.

Spies's gym performance is extraordinary - but his field play is seriously deficient and so is De Jongh's,   Good gym work do help in enhancing performances - but what really counts is the performances on the field of play.        .

I think Mike has got it exactly right, it's all very well have a physical dominance over everyone else but you have to have the rugby brain and intelligence to affect the game and make a difference. There are plenty of nations who have physically superior players compared to others but they are unable to topple the Boks, ABs and Wallabies of this world because of the ability and intelligence that the big nations possess. Hopefully, we continue to manage to mix ability and physical dominance as well as we have in the past.

There are two areas; physical development and technique/skills. Your ability to physically impose yourself is developed by the work you do in the gym, as well as other physical training, i.e., sprint training and endurance work. The skills, technical areas, are where you develop the mechanics of the things you are required to do on the field. They are both relevant and both required in a high performance athlete. Spies for a long time was merely a physical specimen, but from the very start of 2009 tightened up his game. The only area he lacks is distribution, much like Schalk pre-2007 World Cup. He is by no means useless and his performances are nowhere near dire, as the clueless michael once again says of, surprise surprise, another Bull. Rather the lack of distribution makes defending him easier, the opposition do not have to concern themselves with the players around him or the space they leave in zeroing in on him. A player like Big Joe however created havoc in that he could offload and plough through the opposing 10; committing three or four defenders would have been suicide. So, the notion of Spies being poor is a another myth or outdated stance by seven years.

Now, de Jongh. He doesn't create linebreaks? In a team that ranks bottom for backplay, you expect linebreaks? How clueless can you get? He is not physical enough to fulfill the duties of a modern 12, but at 13 there is no problem. His head-on defence and lateral defence are in fact top quality; the best since Fourie and better than Joubert and Fleck. His speed is excellent, his hands are very good, he can weave and step, he has very good awareness and very calm under pressure. His positioning is very sound. He is an overall very accomplished 13, what more is there that you could possibly want? Another dud like JJ?

Then there comes Bismarck, who is a physical monster, but a technically flawed player. We hear now that Spies and de Jongh are not good enough for the Boks, that evenn though they may be strong enough, they lack in technical areas. Then what of Bismarck? This is just another case of plain bias and ignorance. One rule for this player, another for that. The prejudice stems from a tribal 'them, us' mentality where every piece of information is 'sanitized' so that it agrees with the doctrine of tribe x or y. No wonder then we find the rulers of this world laughing at us as the little sheeple have zero critical thinking ability.

Sun the only ignorance that abounds is with you.......Bismark widely regarded as the best 2 in the game is technically flawed in your opinion......wow.

If you were in touch with modern test rugby, you would not be stating that de Jongh at 88kg is physical enough for 13......its simply not the case.......he is a good 7kg too light and it shows in traffic.

He is not able to impose himself physically both on attack or in defence........he is easily carried and driven backwards.

He is good defensively and on attack in open play.......something that only materialises in 30% of a test match.......so for 70% of the time, de Jongh is a liability

This is all evidenced by the fact that you just don't find 88kg outside centres playing test rugby.

Fourie 105kg, JJ 95kg

Kurandrani 100kg, Ashley Cooper 98kg

Conrad Smith 95kg

Tuilangi 110kg, Burrell 102kg

Basteraud 112kg

Jonathan Davies 100kg, Scott Williams 100kg

O'Driscoll 95kg

You get the picture?????

Muscle Mass does not equate to strength, and a few of those have had atrocious defensive displays. Lets talk of Conrad Smith's 100% missed tackles in the World Cup final. So much for that extra bulk. de Jongh is perfectly fine head-on and laterally.

As per Bismarck, he is too upright in contact and his ball presentation is very poor. Lineout throwing hasn't improved in eight years. He is a very good hooker overall, but the best? No, Strauss betters Bismarck and doesn't bleed turnovers. Bismarck though is a very useful impact player. Funny though how Bismarck blowing our Rugby Championship is never brought up. So that's Lambie blowing our World Cup to go along with that, yet the two players are elevated beyond all logic or reason. Yet the contributors such as Morné are attacked. More bias.

Sun Tzu

Are you in fact living in a dream world where reality is transformed into illusions?  When you talk about De Jongh you start hallucinating.

Leys analyse the following load of garbage properly:-

"Now, de Jongh. He doesn't create linebreaks? In a team that ranks bottom for backplay, you expect linebreaks? How clueless can you get? He is not physical enough to fulfill the duties of a modern 12, but at 13 there is no problem. His speed is excellent, his hands are very good, he can weave and step, he has very good awareness and very calm under pressure. His positioning is very sound. He is an overall very accomplished 13, what more is there that you could possibly want? Another dud like JJ?"

Problem 1

" His head-on defence and lateral defence are in fact top quality"

This from a player with a missed tackle ratio of 28% in Super 15 in 2013 is indeed rich.  He had the worst defensive stats of any 13 in SA in 2013.  Mozart - another admirer - had to dream up a reason for all those missed tackles - and what he produced was hilarious.   How do you explain all those missed tackles?   This is the main reason why he should never play rugby above Vodacom Cup level.

Problem 2

"his hands are very good, he can weave and step, he has very good awareness and very calm under pressure?

His hands are very good?   In 2012 his main problem is the number of balls he knocked on and his tendency to lose balls in tackle situations.  Examples are ample.  Take for instance the Aussie test in Pretoria - where there was a long breakaway and Pienaar was tackled near the tryline.  It was unfortunate that De Jongh was the nearest player - because he fluffed the ball and a try scoring opportunity went missing.   In the Murrayfield test - the first ball passed to him with an excellent tryscoring opportunity looming - he knocked on.

In 2012 he was far too often penalized for hanging onto balls in tackle situations in Super 15 and was a drag on the team from that perspective.  It shows anything but calmness in ball playing.  He did improve slightly in the relevant regard in 2013.

Sure he has got very good awareness - the stats in the Scotland and England tests in 2012 showed excellent awareness how to go missing in the games and not get involved in anything at all.   His name was on the team sheet and for the rest he did virtually bugger all.

In 2013 De Jongh was rated as the 23rd best centre in Super 15 - which shows where he is in the hierarchy of centers

What more can you want?  An acceptable no 13 - not a dud like De Jongh - he is a player that should not play in Super 15.  V odacom Cup remains the top of his capacities.

Frankly I do not know.   I said from the word go that the issue should be considered with due regard to performances in Super 15.

Frankly - Fourie is not he answer and I have question marks as to  Engelbrecht as well.  What I do know is that both Fourie and Engelbrecht showed some elements of  acceptable 13 play - in the tests played by De Jongh on 2012 and in Super 15 he showed  zero or near to zero  capacity.   That rules him out - he had opportunities to play in tests in 2012 and was a complete loss.

So lets hope there are some clarity in 2013 Super 15.   There is no doub t that there are key positions that needs to be sorted out and those include flyhalf, no 13 and no 7 and we need a top scrummie as well.

de Jongh has done more at test level than JJ. To be fair Taute did show promise, I we would have benefited with an extended run with Taute. Especially given that JJ was a total blowout and thus waste of time. But in the end, de Jongh is the only real candidate for a genuine specialist 13. We haven't much time until the World Cup, we must end this nonsense and select de Jongh. I know that in a World Cup, in the knockout stages, my money would be on de Jongh not blowing our campaign with fluff tac kles.

Did Conrad Smith not miss 100% of his tackles in the grande final? So all in all, de Jongh had a better defensive showing in the entire EOYT of 2012 than Smith had in one game. Bang goes your theory.

As per Bismarck, he is not the best, but a very good player. He did the Bok cause much harm last year, effectively ruining our entire campaign. In the big rematch at Ellis Park Bismarck was nowhere to be found. So much for BMT. So your argument is founded on shaky ground to begin with.

You are a funny guy,  De Jongh's missed tackle ratio in Super 15 last year was 28% - in other words he missed nearly one in every three attempted tackles.  That is nearly 20% more than is acceptable.

De Jongh will "not blowing our campaign with fluff tackles" - this about a player who fluffed more tackles than any other center in SA on Super 15 level in 2013,   What will happen on test level - if he is that poor on Super 15 level?

Will he play another vanishing trick like he did at Twickenham?   We are lucky though - Meyer at last saw what De Jongh produces and he is OUT of consideration at present.

What will happen at test level? We already know that de Jongh can handle test rugby, you are arguing against a proven test 13. In short, de Jongh is the only 13 in South Africa to compete against Fourie in all of the last ten years. de Jongh was very solid on the EOYT from start to finish.

And while we are on the subject of defence, how like you Goosen? Failed to land one solid tackle in all his minutes of test rugby to date, severely negating the Boks cause. Can you fathom the honesty to admit the obvious? Can you muster within yourself the balance to critique Goosen by the very same standard you do de Jongh? Lets see...

I actually like this guy Sun Tzu.   J is so stupid that a person needs to have special sympathy for him.   A player failed as a tackler in Super 15 - but he is a proven defender in tests - that is according to him.    He also  have the weirdest ideas about players - something like Bismarck being according to him not good enough and Morne being the best flyhalf since 1992.

When facts and examples are quoted to the contrary - he does not deal with it - he ignores it and uses even more flowery language to describe the virtues of his favoured  players.

With him facts do not count - cloud 9 matters.

As for the best flyhalf of the last few decades, anyone who knows me (and who doesn't lie through his rotting yellow teeth) knows that I rate Henry Honiball as the greatest flyhalf I've ever seen and trust me, Henry Honiball on a really bad day . . . blindfolded, dragging a shackle and wearing handcuffs . . . is still miles better than Morning Stain or Botch James at their absolute best.

Full name Wesley Fofana Born January 20, 1988, Paris Current age 26 years 15 days Major teams Clermont Auvergne, France Position Centre Height 5 ft 10 in Weight 194 lb   194 lb is 87.5 kg's Saffex. Are you saying Wesley Fofana is not good enough for a test 13??   He plays 12 most often but has played a test at 13. Is he not good enough for a test centre because I certainly remember you rating him highly..   Way too much emphasis on size and playing in "traffic!" Hey Saff, theres a thought. Why dont you go play in traffic??   If a guy is good enough at 12 or at 11 or 14, he is good enough for 13. You dont need special powers to play 13 but can be an average joe at 12 or 14! Super rugby is no different to test rugby in terms of your opposition centres most games and De Jongh has played 13 often enough and the Stormers were top of the log.   If he can organise the defence and exploit a gap, size is of little importance except when he weighs 60kgs. That might be a problem but 88 kgs with his pace is not an issue.   JJ, with all his size, gets taken down just the same as De Jongh so stop speaking shit about traffic and the rest.

So now we are allowed to pass judgements by what we see and stats are irrelevant again?? So I take it JJ's stats against NZL matter little now because we all saw him play kak and cost us tries with our own eyes. The same way stats mean shit now as you can see with your own eyes he weighs 93kgs.
Saff, u wanted stats. Let's stick with them. The man is 194lbs. Your theory is yet again blown out of the water. We can all see de jongh is a more complete centre than JJ will ever be. Neither are what the Boks need however!
