JJ on the bench for Blue Bullsby Brenden Nel 31 July 2014, 09:11

Springbok midfielder JJ Engelbrecht will make an uncustomary appearance off the bench when the Vodacom Blue Bulls face off with the Steval Pumas in a warm-up match for the Absa Currie Cup that starts next week.

Engelbrecht’s name is among the replacements in a 26-man squad named by coach Frans Ludeke that will take on the Pumas side that is devoid of any Springboks that may be called up for international duty when the Bok squad is announced on Saturday.

The team will be led by flanker Deon Stegmann, who is also the captain for the Currie Cup season.

William Small-Smith, the former SA under-20 captain who looked impressive at Super Rugby level with the limited chances he had, will play at 13, while Burger Odendaal will have an opportunity to show what he can do in the absence of Jan Serfontein at 12.

Springboks Akona Ndungane and Piet van Zyl are in the backline while up front there is an all-Springbok front row of Werner Kruger, Bandise Maku and Dean Greyling.

SA under-20 players Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg and Jesse Kriel are also on the bench.

The squad to play against the Steval Pumas on Friday is: 15.Jurgen Visser, 14.Akona Ndungane, 13.William Small-Smith, 12.Burger Odendaal, 11.Sampie Mastriet, 10.Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9.Piet van Zyl, 8.Jacques Engelbrecht, 7.Jono Ross, 6.Deon Stegmann (c), 5.Grant Hattingh, 4.Paul Willemse, 3.Werner Kruger, 2.Bandise Maku, 1.Dean Greyling.
Replacements: 16.Bongi Mbonambi, 17.Morné Mellett, 18.Hencus van Wyk, 19.Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, 20.Wiaan Liebenberg, 21.Nardus van der Walt, 22.Rudy Paige, 23.Tony Jantjies, 24.JJ Engelbrecht, 25.Ulrich Beyers, 26.Jesse Kriel.

He has had a very quiet SuperXV in 2014, a decline since 2013. Maybe they will give him a run on the wing.
I dont see any current Boks in this Bulls team (No Matfield, no Hougaard, no Serfontein etc), does t hat mean JJ has been dropped by the boks?

I hope JJ moves to the wing. He has the makings of a very good wing and his experience at center will have benefited him.

I guess fate held him responsible for the Barrett try after all....from that moment his star has plunged. This was a fantasy....much like the notion that Lambie is a test flyhalf and Coenie is a test tighthead. How do so many get it so wrong, for so long?

Yep that's where you put a chap who is injured....on the bench ....instead of resting for Bok duty. That makes as much sense as usual thikkus. Dare I say, I told you so....hahaha.

in any event - this is a warm up match and normally an opportunity to play youngsters to see how they fit in.
That being said I have a very high opinion of Small-Smith  and he may yet take over the 13 position from JJ.

There are 26 players in the squad announced only 23 will be part of the match day side.

You told me fuck all Moffie as per usual you are too fucking stupid to pick up on these things unless in your warped world 26 feature in a game these days?

Moffie you telling us that we are getting things wrong has about as much credibility as the postman telling me the same, the postman who is a football lover.

Next you will be telling me that because Meyer has dropped JJ, you should feel vindicated, the same Meyer who is as ignorant as you are and its only a matter of time that we who get so much wrong, will be rubbing your ignorance in your face.

Let me guess you think Meyer and effectively your pathetic side are actually going to win one single game against Oz and NZ this year?

Fuck me, I cant wait to rub your stupid ignorant nose in it, in a few weeks time

Well given how many times I've rubbed your nose in it over the past few months, I can fully understand how much you want revenge. Although I think it's a bit of a tactical error to just come on here and admit that. Still you have your JJ doll to caress.

It has been announced that the Curry Cup teams will not contain any Boks this year. Good player management from SARU.
It would appear then that JJ "the best centre since Danie Gerber" is not even considered starting Curry Cup level.
At this rate he could be surplus to the Bulls requirements, and find himself on Ebay auction sooner rather than later....

JJ is contracted by SARU.
However it would appear that he is now surplus to requirements and Meyer must be taking some heat for wasting budget on contracting a player who :
1. Is not a first choice player at Bok level, not even a match day Bok player2. A player who is no longer even in the Bok squad.
It is like the 1995 World Cup Boks, many of them were contracted for the next couple/few of years- but they were not even in these squads.
Francios Pienaar is an example- he was playing Club Rugby in England- when he had a Springbok contract. He was not selected by the next coach after he kept getting knocked out. Mckraaf though was like Straulie , he kept changing his squads so contracting players was a costly affair.

Wel slaan my met 'n nat vis. The bright spark who thinks that he knows it all apparently doesn't seem to know that the teams for these warm-up games have 26 players in the team. At least for the Bulls warm-up games, by mutual agreement with the teams that they play against. Just like it was last year and the year before. If you really were that clever then surely you would have known it and it wouldn't have been such a surprise when I now tell you that the Pumas will also be fielding a 26 man team.

The team manager Mr Marius Van Rensburg said this morning that it's vitally important for the PUMAS to get off to a great start in the ABSA Currie Cup 2014 season on 9 August when they face the Cheethas at the Mbombela Stadium. This will be the very first time the Freestate boys will play in Nelspruit and it promises to be a great match.

This weekend's game will be with 26 team members a side and the Rolling Sub system will be in use. It's also the only chance the Bulls will have to pull their men together in a practice match invironment before the season commences.

STEVAL PUMAS
JW Bell; Ruwellyn Isbel, JW Jonker, Stefan Watermeyer, Rosko Speckman; Justin van Staden, Reynier van Rooyen; Renaldo Bothma, Jaco Bouwer, Corn? Steenkamp (Captain), Frikkie Spies, Giant Mtyanda, Vincent Koch, Jacques Momberg, Corn? Fourie.
Replacements: Swys du Toit, Dee-Jay Terblanche, Marius Coetzer, RW Kember, Snake Nyoka, JC Roos, Heinrich Steyl, Hennie Skorbinski, Uzair Cassiem, Trompie Pretorius, Stephan Kotz?.

VODACOM BLUE BULLS
Jurgen Visser, Akona Ndungane, William Small-Smith, Burger Odendaal, Sampie Mastriet, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Piet van Zyl, Jacques Engelbrecht, Jono Ross, Deon Stegmann (c), Grant Hattingh, Paul Willemse, Werner Kruger, Bandise Maku, Dean Greyling.
Replacements: Bongi Mbonambi, Morn? Mellett, Hencus van Wyk, Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, Wiaan Liebenberg, Nardus van der Walt, Rudy Paige, Tony Jantjies, JJ Engelbrecht, Ulrich Beyers, Jesse Kriel.

Ah well. Maybe you are not as clever as you think you are.

A SERU copmtract does not automatically ensure Springbok selection.  Juan de Jongh had a SARU contract and virtually never made it into the team.  Francois Steyn has got one and where is he now?
I know for instance that the three year contract of Francois Steyn was signed in April 2012 - so it is only up in April next year - but if present trends continue his contract will not be renewed.
As to JJ ENgelbrecht - I believe he was on a two-year contract signed last year sometime in October and that contract should be terminating next year in October.  Unless there is a drastic upgrading in his performances it is unlikely that there will be a contract renewal in his case either.
There may be a misunderstanding about the SARU request not to play players n contract with them.  Surely that applies only to players who have a contract and iis selected for the Springbok squad.   Most squad players do not have a contract with SARU - so I think the implication is that the players in the squad will not play in the CC - whether or not they have a contract with SARU .

Dave you are really a low fellow.  What evidence do you have that Vlag has ever been involved in racist acts? What evidence can you provide that you have ever taken on a racist situation? If you can't provide any evidence, making these kind of statements is  using the stigma of  racism for your own purposes....just as low as racism itself.

Yeah like what? Denny is from a distinguished English speaking family, who  left RSA because he was in danger as a result of his political activities and you accuse him of being  a "dutchman"? What are you trying to say that all South Africans of Dutch decent are racists? Then you imply Vlag is a racist confirming that bias. It has no place on this Board, cut it out.

The Committee on South African War Resistance (COSAWR) was founded by political exiles in London and Amsterdam in the late 1970s, providing refuge for war resisters seeking political asylum and working with European anti-apartheid movements to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime. COSAWR carried out extensive research on the South African military and debriefed ex-soldiers, providing clandestine structures of the ANC with intelligence that helped it to undermine the police and military from within.

In 1982, Cape Town lawyer Mike Evans, who co-founded the ECC as a UCT student, was helping another objector, Brett Myrdal, with his campaign as he toured the country, speaking at university campuses on conscientious objection.

The following year, at their national conference, the activist women's organisation, the Black Sash, passed a resolution calling for the end to conscription - thus providing the impetus for the ECC.

It was illegal to persuade someone not to do military service but it was not illegal to call for an end to conscription. Military objectors used this loophole in the Defence Act saying that they wanted a choice as opposed to saying, 'Don't go to the army.'
