Did you guys see the size of the 19 year old lock coming off the bench for the Sharks last weekend? Shit he is huge 130kg 2.01m. I hear he is a star in the making. Commentators said he had good speed for such a huge lad, running away from a back in some recent 10 a side game. One to watch

Dave

Was he in the SA under 20WC team this year?

Cannot remember him playing for the Sharks - he may have been on the bench - but it is more likely to play for the Sharks Under 21 or even under 19 teams.

Anyway - you are a good identifier of young players - so I will watch out for him in future.

Saw the game on Saturday, but didn't take particular note of his performance. To be that size at his age is quite something, and he is probably still filling out. It does take more than just being big to be successful, but he certainly is a prospect.

He is 19 years old, same length as Matfield, but 5kg heavier than Matfield.

Too young IMHO for Test Rugby, but he should in any case first prove himself.

Nice find though Dave.

Yes Dave, I saw him and thought he was the biggest prop I'd ever seen and later saw his number and realised he was the replacement lock. A man mountain!
Blikkies, I question whether he's only 5kg heavier than Matfield? He looks like he could eat Matfield as a snack between meals.

Look what I found . . . a comparison from 18 months ago when JJ was still a schoolboy!

He must just stay with the Sharks. I believe Garry Teichman is building a team which gel well ... far better than what John Smit could achieve.

I was just going to post that. I see he is listed at 120kg.

Blikkies

At 120 kgs he is not 5 kgs heavier than Matfield - who claimed in his own book that his playing weight was between 105 and 107 kgs.  I tend to believe what is said by players themselves

Looking at the pic - Matfield had skinny and thin legs - hence his nickname Kiewiet.  This youngsters legs seems anything but.

So the weight difference is more likely 14 kgs and not 5 kgs.  .

No he is 130kg listen to the commentary when you watch the game. He played the second half, had a few carries but nothing of note. Finding his feet of course at 19
