His performance today showed more confidence since he has returned from serious injuries. It looks like it is getting back to 2012.
He looks to have bulked up as well as the season has gone on, and looks to be able to get over the gain line when tackled.
He ran flat onto the advantage line, varied his angles and created space for his outside backs. For the first time this season he attacked the advantage line himself and showed some good offload capability, and was strong enough in the tackle. ]He has a good passing game, but it is good to see him vary the play looking for gaps himself.
His kicking was better than Morne Steyn, topped off by a 55 metre drop goal.
His pole kicking was great.
Their is no reason that Morning Steyn must start for the Boks again.
I would like to see Goosen behind a dominant Bok pack, especially at the start of the season against the Minnows- with Jean at inside centre.
Meyer will want to see some more effective up and unders.
It is such an effective tactic when done well, not when the kick is too long as it often is with the SA teams this season. When done well it often results in a penalty in a kickable position. Goosen does not kick as long as Frans Steyn, but he does have serious distance.
He also proved effective at fullback. Given that Willie Leroux is probably better on the wing, where he can roam more freely without leaving the space at the back- Goosen showed that he could also be considered for Bok Fullback. He has lots of pace-probably as fast as most wings and is a good attacking player. He could revel in the extra space that fullback affords attacking players. Also today when playing at 15 he was also coming in at first reciever.
Imagine Willie Leroux coming in at first receiver from the Wing, Goosen from Fullback, and someone like Frans Steyn at 10. It could be unpredictable for the defending team, or it could become a ball hogging nightmare for the boks.
