Thoughts?
Johan Sadie for Bok 13?
Johann Sadie was by a long way the best 13 we have seen on display this year in any SA franchise. He is a key player in the Cheetahs backline which on their own scored as many tries as the Sharks did in total and more than the Lions, Bulls and Stormers franchises scored.
Unlike most of the other SA no 13 Centers he is playing a thinking game and that makes him different.
What really surprised me is the progress he made at 13 playing for the Cheetahs - he went nowhere playing for the Bulls at 13 - so there must be something in his coaching and natural abilities that is coming through now. As I said previously - the Bulls is the graveyard for all centers. The sooner Engelbrecht and Serfontein get away from them - the better it would be for their careers.
Reinach, Sarel Faf. Boschoff, Lambie, Steyn
Jean, Allende, Jan, Jordaan Sadie, SitholiHabana, JP, Jordaan, JJ, Willie, Mvovo.
I probably missed a few as well.
Behind a domianat back they would be lethal. The big trick is to pick a loose trio for a running game. Not too flimsy either.
How about Fourie, Vermuelen and Britz. Add in Beast, Strauss, Malherbe, Etzebeth, Du Toit/ Lood/Flip.
Very mobile powerful pack. Great set peice and lineout. Pace in the loose trio. Then go for a more balanced game. They would simply be unbeatable.
Translate that thought to the Boks and one realisies we are palying way below potential. However Meyer is straigtening the ship and we await the next phase of development.
The kiwis are terrified of the sleeping giant that is SA rugby and like Mexted they hope the slumber lasts. Eagerly they encourage the selection of never has beens like wee matfiled etc.Beeno as always seeing through the kbbs
I doubt Meyer would choose him though- because his Bulls got rid of Slim Sadie
We really have a problem with the coaches. I like Jake White - but his strong suit is not backline coaching - he had to bring in Eddy Jones in 2007. The result is the harks backline are critically poor in attacking rugby. You may have seen that the Sharks backline thus far this year scored only 8 tries 0 four of which were scored by Jordaan (2), Lambiue and Reinach. In other words in five matches the rest of their backline scored only four tries - Mostly as a result of individual brilliance of some players. The backline as a whole is malfunctioning and the problem to a large extent is Francois Steyn. Too much unthinking rugby and poor reading of the game. Perhaps you missed what Mallett and Naas Botha said of him yesterday. Ir is apprent they think he is useless as a flyhalf - end of story.
I think Smal will ultimately get the Stormers back on track - perhaps not this year, but definitely next year. The damage caused over the last two years will take time to repair.
There is no hope that the Bulls backline will ever come right. Mozart think that theya re playing the right brand of rugby and apparemtly the view is one of Ludeke as well. Can you imagine a backline with Matfield as attack coach = I know he was moonlighting in the backline more than he did his work in tight 5 situations - but that certainly does not make him a proper attack coach. Bad news that one.
I think you are mistaken about Goosen - he is a key why the Cheetahs attacking rigby is so good. I would consider him ahead of everyone else if a really functioning backline is needed.
To be quite honest Fourie had a very poor season this year compared to what he achi eved last year. Coetzee to my mind is at present the better 6 of the two.
Jordaan has been a big loss to the Sharks, his pace and creativity are missed big time.
JP is not a wing as he lacks the pace. I see him as a 13 and put Jordaan perhaps on the wing?
Jake will have to sort this all out. Mvovo at FB has worked. SP Marais at inside centre?
Flyhalf problems looming for the Sharks and Sweil needs time off the bench wherever possible to grow him as a player.
During half time yesterday both Mallett and Naas was very critical of Steyn's passing game. They even showed by graphics how he destroyed potential moves when the Sharks had an overlap by making skip passes to the wing - thus eliminatinmg the overlap advantage. They claimed at happened three times. That shows he does not read the game properly and is utterly predictable.
On the air they did not pull punches. If they are asked for a diplomatic reply - they might say Steyn is an option at flyhalf - but from what they said during match discussions on the Lions game and again yesterday they were impressed with his long distance penalty kicks - nothing else.
I wouuld hate to see such a slow player playing at flyhalf. Remember that rolling ball kicked over the goal line in the Lions 22. He had a more than 2 meter start on Skosan - the latter beat him over 20 meters by nearly two meters. I know Skosan is a fast runner - but over 20 meters to overhaul Steyn and pass him with ease is really a no show.
Look Jordaan played at inside center a number of times for the Sharks and was very good. He is an option there - as well.
White needs are decent backline coach.
Thought more questions would be asked about Sadie's defence, to be honest.
I did not think that Sadie has had a major problem in defense - and did not take note of problems in the relevant regard. However, after your comment and in the ab sence of other resources I checked his stats about tackles and found that he made 48 tackles thus far in Super 15 and missed 10. That represents a missed tackle ratio of 17,2% - which is slightly higher than an acceptable ratio of 10 to 12%.
Goqweverm it is considerably below Francais Steyn missed tackle ratio of 24%this year and also much lower than the 23% missed by De Jongh last year.
My view is that every player can improve on defense - but I do not think that Sadie has any really serious defensive problems like for instance JJ (seriously defective technique), Francois Steyn (speed deficiency) and De Jongh have,
That is the first game in which he looked good, for the rest he has had little opportunity. I like him as a player but he just does not have the x factor and I think that is down to his lack of sheer pace.
At best a good back-up test centre in the Olivier mould
You really have a very one-eyed perception of Sadie.
He has ample pace as is evident by the fact that he more than any other SA backline player has gained meters for his side. In the games thus far this year he has carried the ball 50 times - making a meter gain of 256 meters. He has made 9 clean line breaks - more than any other center again - so I think he was really on average better than any other 13 this year.
Sadie did very well for himself by getting away from the Bulls. I really think the Bulls are destroying the careers of both Serfontein and Engelbrecht - they should leave there and go to the Cheetahs or even the Lions - and you will see two entirely different players from what you see at present.
And by the way which Olivier are you referring to? If Meisiekind - he was in the Bulls style a routine crashballer - something which Sadie is definitely not.
Mike are you trying to tell me that I don't know what I am talking about and that you do??????
Mike, Sadie is not quick and that's a fact so don't try tell me that he is. Equally he has done nothing of note all season, but was good this weekend.
Olivier was a better centre, of that there is no doubt
I am not telling you anything - but stating facts. Sadie is not as quick as JJ - but he definitely had been a better performer than JJ was all season long. I think he is a better reader of the game than the other less successful centers. Matter of fact he made more clean line breaks than all the other SA centers combined.
Do you share my opinion that Serfontein and Engelbrecht in the interest of their careers should leave the Bulls?
I have to agree with Dave here....Sadie is a nice provincial player. I mean get serious do you want Sadie lining up against Bastareaud or Tuilagi? He doesn't have the physical assets to play on the biggest stages.
It's nice making these lists of nice provincial players, but test rugby is a whole different thing.
And De Jongh has. The latest Mozart craziness is size, size and size. Basteraud is suddenly his model center because of size. How many times has opposition players got the better of Bausteraud? Slow as a carthorse, but then size is suddenly everything.
Francois Steyn is his ideal flyhalf - partly because of his "presence" - problem is his poor defense and lack of anything remotely attached to attacking rugby makes that "presence" a joke.
Size is only important if it is accompanied by bell sense and skills - if not it is a handicap.
But then Mozart is known for his instability in support of players. He supports De Jongh - smaller and lighter than Sadie - but Sadie is a nice provincial player so what is De Jongh?
The only reason Sadie features more than JJ has this season is that the Cheetahs play an expansive game. Its a bit difficult for a 13 to impress when he only receives the ball on average 5 times again and with none of those receipts in space.
Yes Serfontein and JJ should leave the Bulls and the Bulls gameplan is not suited to attacking centres.
Crap they have proved ages ago they are the best young centres in SA. JJ proved that against NZ last year. Serfontein has proved it on numerous occasions......look no further than his lovely break last Sat. There is something about this kid......once he is established at test level he will kick some serious arse.
We have some good talent at centre.......Frans, JJ, Serfontein, Esterhuizen and de Allende in the correct environment would thrive......ie an attacking game plan.
Add a yellow card or two - thinking of dear Jannie - and you have the right mix for useless player of the match.
I agree with you about Esterhuysen and JJ - but advise the same in your case about the one-dimensional Francois Steyn and Victor Matfield at flyhalf and lock respectively. Matter of fact it would be wise to forget about Steyn at center too.
You will find that all Mozart player assessments are based on one incident during a game or at a stretch one game in a whole series. The problem is that in the case of a particular player he likes the incident could be followed by a drove of poor plays - but the latter does not count.
Beware a player he does not like - he would find ways to denigrate players even if they are top performers. He even invent words for the purpose - like a player being a "process tackler". Players he does not like who makes a large number of tackles are "process tacklers" Players he likes - who make far fewer or even less effective tackles are never "process tacklers". All BS in fact hence my nickname for him.
Anyone who takes his assessments of players as a serious evaluation of a players performances must have his head read. His is no in-depth assessment of performance - it is at best a joke. I find it very funny and when he gets cornered - he runs to personal attacks or try to side-track the discussions - that is even funnier.
Lets accept those things as facts and enjoy dis flowery language - especially when he is cornered.
