Kirwan: I am pissed of with the performance Sportal.Co.Nz - (11/03/2013)

Blues coach John Kirwan pointed towards poor preparation as the main cause of their disappointing 28-21 loss to the Bulls at Eden Park on Sunday.

Kirwan's youthful squad failed to execute the expansive style of play that saw them upset the Hurricanes and Crusaders in previous weeks and were outscored three-tries-to-two.

Facing the Bulls, known for their strong kick-chase game and bruising forward play, Kirwan said his troops strayed from the patterns they practised and instead played a style that accommodated their opposition.

The loss, their first of the season, was described by the new coach as the 'worst performance' he has witnessed so far.

"I didn't think we performed to be honest," Kirwan said after the game.

"I felt that we didn't play what we trained all week so that was disappointing.

"It was pretty poor really."

Captain Ali Williams was irate after the Bulls were allowed to triumph at Eden Park for the first time in 16 years and hinted that complacency may have been an issue for some players.

"We're a team that plays with the ball and stresses defences and we resorted to playing their style of football, which, they are the best in the world at," said Williams.

"There was no spark. That can't come from a coaching staff, that comes from within, individually, and then it comes collectively by looking at your mates and saying 'here's another chance to wear the Blues jersey'.

"I'm pretty pissed off at how we played, purely because of our attitude towards playing Blues rugby."

Six debutants were thrown in the deep end against the three-times Investec Super Rugby champions; a decision that Kirwan admits did cost them.

Taranaki wing Waisake Naholo epitomised the difference in class between personnel on either side and made a number of costly errors - one led to the Bulls' second try.

Rookie first-five Baden Kerr will also rue his botched kick in midfield that also contributed to that same five-pointer.

He must also take responsibility for not commanding the game plan. However, Kirwan felt any type of critism should land squarely on him.

"We made some changes and I think we trained probably not as well as we could have all week," Kirwan added.

"I'll cop that on the chin and we just need to get back into it."

Meanwhile, Bulls coach Frans Ludeke was pleased with the way his side achieved its goals, which included shutting down the Blues' ability to offload in contact.

"Obviously any win away, especially in New Zealand, is special, it doesn't come easy," Ludeke said.

"We had to put together a special effort to accomplish that.

"I must say it's really satisfying."

The Bulls scored all three of their tries through sweeping passing plays, as opposed to the crash and bash style that is their bread and butter.

Captain Pierre Spies highlighted the importance of having alternative options on attack to avoid being too predictable.

"We like to vary our game a bit and make use of opportunities we're given," Spies added.

"You've got to have a complete game to win the competition."

The Blues will use next week's bye to dissect the loss while the Bulls prepare to face the Crusaders in Christchurch.

I can understand the frustration on the part of the Blues.   In their first two games they looked very good against New Zealand teams - their forwards played a major role in those victories and once they got the better inthat Department of the game - they easily overcame their oppoents and the result was release of balls to their very dangerous backline which scored enough tries to lead to record their two wins.

I think that they probably tried to get the same method going - that is to be better or on par with the Bulls in the forward Department - but it never happened and they came short.

This is not a good sign for their campaign outside of New Zealand - especially against teams such as the brumbies and more specifically against teams like the Sharks, the Stormers and the Cheetahs.

no callum retallick, peter saili, george nokola in that team at all. chris noakes and parson were on the bench.
i blame kirwan for the loss to the bulls. it was stupid of him to underestimate a bulls team & feild a team completely diffenrt from those that did the kob against the crusaders.
earlier in the week kirwans reasoning for wholesale changes to his team was this is a marathon not sprint is weak, its the blues 3rd game of the season, what are they out of puff already??? blues had a bye next, could that not be considered a rest???
there are plenty of teams during the season that kirwan could have tried his B team on, waratahs who are their next opponents, force, rebels, highlanders, cheetahs, but he chose the bulls to try out new players, WTF??? o_O

the bulls arent the best team, but theyre in the same pool as all the top teams which includes the stormers, sharks, crusaders, cheifs, reds and brumbies and hirwan should have selected his team accordingly.
the players may not have deliver, but kirwan didnt deliver a team that could beat the bulls either.

I know of a certain Bok coach, who made the same mistake in 2008.

hakwa and Sasue

I think kirwan made a real mistake in judging the situation.   He obviously thought that -

  *    the relatively poor showing of the Bulls against the Force indicates some weaknesses in the Bulls team; and

  *    the effects of jet lag - which take at least 5 days to really wear off would result in the same fiasco as happened in the Chiefs - Cheetahs game - would immobilse the Bulls in the second half of the game.

This was perhaps the reasons for the changes to the  team made by Kirwan - so he must take the criticism and live with it.  Some of the changes was really questionable and even stupid.

I have to admit - that I think Kirwan is an ass hole - his late team announcement cost me dearly in my fantasy team selection points and I am glad he got it in the balls this time around.  LOL

@mikey,

dont be too hard on kirwan, he only announced his team late at my request, LMAO, :oP

but i agree, kirwan made fudged up his team selections for all those various reasons & i have been arguing tooth & nail about it on the kiwi forums.
those selections were borderline stupid and IMO the great result the blues pulled off in their first two games gave him a false sense of belief in his squad as a whole too.

what really annoys me is that his main reason for those selectiuons was made with player fatigue in mind, even though it was only their 3rd game of the season & they had a bye coming up, WTF??? o_O
hopefully kirwans ego dosent get the better of him again.
