Well, John Smit may well have lied about his approach to Nick Mallett to coach the Sharks but he's back in my good books after I read here that he told Joke White to take a hike.

Joke doesn't seem like the most loyal person, does he? Well done Smittie!

As far as I understood Jake and John have a good working relationship together. So there might be a few reasons that I can think of based on that why he would say no to Jake.

1. Jake has a test job at the Wallabies in his sights.

2. Jake is happy at the Brumbies and doesn't want to move.

3. Jake's asking price was not in the bracket where the Sharks where willing to accompany him.

All this news about who was in line for the Sharks top job but either said no or where denied is a bit unsavoury towards Bredndon Venter though.

Venter is a great coach, he did well with Saracens and we all saw what he did with the Baby boks backline. So really the sharks did well to sign him. the media however seem to want to find someone else under every rock that would have been more preferable.

Waaaahahahaha, what a joke. The source is: "according to a report on the Beeld website". The Beeld never bothered to run this juicy story in print, once they had it? And both Jake and Clive Woodward, who are friends, were competing against each other for this job? Boy you have to be pretty gullible to buy this rubbish.

Clive Woodward spends most of his time on Sky running down the current England coach, in the hope that he will get the England job for the 2015 WorldCup.

Ek, if Joke White is so interested in the Wallabies job and if he's happy at the Brumbies then why do you think he was asking about the Sharks job?

Well Ek, if you don't believe the article at all then say so, because that's a different argument entirely.

I can't say for sure if the story is true but in the context of my original posting, your comment implies that John Smit said "no" to a question that Jake didn't ask . . . which doesn't really make sense.

MO(AN), the article is pretty clear so I don't know why you're saying things like "maybe this" and "could that be possible" and guessing all sorts of other stuff. According to that article, Jake was interested in the position of Sharks coach and John Smit said "no" to him.

Look, I know you have some kind of  family connection to Jake and I know what you'd like to believe, but my initial post was based on an article that is there for anyone to read and doesn't even hint at the possibility of Joke saying "no" to Smit first . . . but if you want to start some other conspiracy thread or talk about some other exchange between Joke and Smit that you're aware of then, then please feel free.

This thread is about an actual article that claims Smit said "no" to Jake, not an imaginary article that has it the other way around.

Absolutely spot on Mozart...any fool who believes this crap is naive and as thick as a brick. JW would not be a fool to leave a highly sucessful and well paid job to take on the uncertainties and fickleness of the Sharks circus and the most fickle supporters...that call for blood unless the Sharks are on top. John Smit might change this and if ever there was was a man to do it it's probably him.

Anyway who would like to live in the rat hole of Durb's with it's litter and polution and the most corrupt ANC municipality in SA... compared to the clean civilized town/city of Canberra...sorry I live just outside Durb's in the upper highway area and that used to be a beautiful country town turned into chaos...roads blocked, all running the wrong way...potholes galore.

I'm planning to move to the Western Cape...where it is alot better.

Rooinek this is precisely what a mean...you believe everything you read...this is no attack on a specific individual but on a mindset that unthinking people believe...they believe everything they read...newspapers and journalists propagate words in order to sell...the biggest deceivers are those that manipulate partial truths and quote things out of context...this is mass manipulation...man has lost sense ...the sense to reason. Partial and subtle truth is more misleading than blatant outrageous lies and wordplay is the tool of journalism. All I'm saying it certainly does not make sense...who would want the Sharks from the position of the Brumbies, certainly not a rational human being from JK's perspective... he simply does not trust SARU or the Sharks Francise. Certainly not SARU that bites the hand that fed them with a William Webb Ellis World Cup...the highest accolade in rugby...they probably would have done the same thing to Kitch if ill-health was not the reason. I'm sorry I'm not unpatriotic but I have a huge problem with vacillating and two-faced personalities, fickle people that have no integrity and have hidden agendas. Harsh word yes, but that applies to most of our polluted mindsets. I sincerely do mean any offense to any individual but to the slipping mindsets of goodness and integrity that is bypassing all of us, indeed not only in SA but world wide. I know it's a lost cause but I'm not one that can accept it. I'm very sorry if I offend you or others but it's time to be honest and listen because you never listen correctly and jump down people's without carefully hearing what they are saying...you merely jump to your defense to protect your flagging ego. Sorry mate that’s the truth and I'm sorry the truth hurts...and that also applies to me because sometimes I make the same mistakes.

Clive Woodward doesn't spend much time on Sky at all, let alone " running down " Stuart Lancaster, that's the name that seems to be escaping Sharkbok at the moment. It would all be for naught if he did, no-one's getting the England job before the next RWC, and that includes Woodward and Jake White, thank God.

Australia have my sympathies, but, if it keeps him from forcing his CV on England every 5 minutes, then I'd be very happy to see Jake White gainfully employed as their Coach :)

Becs I saw Clive Woodward on TV running down Stuart Lancaster- I think it was during the most recent 6 nations. I am sure he is keen on the job with the World Cup now being in England in 2015.

On a seperate note, I actually saw Clive Woodward at Wandsworth shopping mall, in South West London. He was crossing the street and had a very smug look on his face.

I though about tackling him. Very small for an ex professional rugby player, just shows how small the backline players were before rugby turned professional.

Woodward is a snake in the grass, after his best players retired after the worldcup he ditched the job, and then about a year later was running down Andy Robinson for ruining the team saying that he had been given an excellant squad to continue with.

I read the article as well and I believe that Jake White - for his own reasons - may have made some enquires - probably also from a financial angle and a wish to come back to SA for family reasons - and there was no indication that he actually proceeded and applied for the job - or even a reason for a NO response from Smit. It is common practice to make enquiries before applying for a job or discussing possible acceptance of candidature with a manager of the relevant institution. Taking that into account - I do not think that a point was reached where Smit would have to say NO to Jake White about anything at all. In essence an enquiry may indicate some interest - but is different from taking the matter any further - which could ultimately have resulted in a "NO" response.

Unfortunately by blurting this out Smit put himself in exactly the position he found unacceptable in Mallett....ie gratuitously providing information about informal private conversations. I agree with your conclusions Oom.....there was nothing for Smit to say "no" to....and there was no job offer for Mallett to reject.

I got to the same conclusion.

If Smit had learned anything from this episode, surely this is the non- disclosure of job applications- from both prospective employer & employee.

Excerpt from John Smit: "“It was not how it was supposed to be.

But I (john Smit) could not control the political grandstanding of Nick Mallett. And I don’t think Nick, as much as he was putting himself on the market, realised the repercussions it would have on one man and his family, and also the people who supported Plumtree and enjoy the Sharks. How it came out was terrible and the last thing I had planned.”

What are the possible repercussions for Jake White or Clive Woodward, with John Smit's political grandstanding in the media to say that their applications have been rejected?

Jake White is in the same tournament as the Sharks as an oppositon coach, how will his employers and the team he coaches learning that he wants to jump ship for the Sharks?

John Smit has been a total screw up and he is putting the blame on Nick Mallett who used this oppertunity to promote himself as above the position.

John Smit then does the same to say that Brendon Venter was the first choice, and then discloses who the other candidates were that got rejected.

Sharkbok I don't think Smit was right to raise the issue in the media - but as for repercussions for Woodward and White - there can really be none. Just making enquiries does not really mean an application that is being rejected. Their present employers cannot legally act on disclosure of such an enquiry - and I dout very much whther there would be any repercussions for them. It may have an indirect impact on White - that is if indeed he is interested in the Wallaby coach job - but that is also conjecture. There is in reality no way that White would get that job - the Aussies went for Deans but is unlikely to go with another foreigner - so the present potential interest White may have in that job - is pure conjecture.

The only surprising thing here is that a man or over grown boy rather of 50+ years old can believe everything he reads!

Thank God he still lives at home so his parents can screen any mail that is addressed to him. This is the type of fool that will pay into Nigerian shysters bank accounts to release him his fortune or believe he has won a million bucks for being the 999,999 visitor to a website!

Ha ha it just keeps getting better Rooinek!

On an equally serious note as that of finding Rooinek help, I think John is trying to walk before he can crawl. He needs to be careful because he will very quickly become unpopular with talking too much. I understand he wants to be seen as reviving Sharks rugby and being a pro active, no nonsense type of guy but he must be careful not to ruin relationships he has built in the past. End of the day, these are the same guys that can help him add value.

Jake White wants an international job. Don't read too much into that story.

Becs, awesome comment regards Jake throwing his CV at England. That would be the hardest task he has ever had to encounter. Take a bunch of average joes and make them constantly competitive! No one within England is gona manage that ;-)
