Ex Planet Rugby

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has made three changes to his XV for his side's Super Rugby game against the Waratahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Lock George Earle, who announced his move to the Scarlets earlier this week, is rested after he endured concussion in the loss to the Sharks.

Earle is replaced by Andries Ferreira, who has been on the bench for the last couple of games.

Drotske has also promoted back-row Ashley Johnson and Griquas winger Rocco Jansen.

Johnson will start at flanker, with Justin Downey relegated to the bench, while Jansen comes in for Cameron Jacobs, who is out of the 22 altogether.

Ferreira will partner with Izak van der Westhuizen - another Cheetahs stalwart who has announced his departure to Edinburgh at the end of the season - in the second-row and will look to impress Drotske with a place in the Cheetahs' Currie Cup side also up for grabs.

The hosts are desperate for table points as they look to distance themselves from the log bottom Lions, who face possible relegation from the competition as the SA Rugby Union's 2013 conundrum continues.

And the Cheetahs have deemed a victory crucial if they want to keep their dream of ending among the top six teams alive.

"It's still a long way to go. We've got a home game against the Waratahs and after that we have a bye before the four-week break for the Test series against England," Drotske said.

"Then there are still three games to be played against some of the teams that are also in the running for that sixth place.

"Yes, some teams have to win and others must lose for us to benefit, but we can better our chances by beating the Waratahs."

The Cheetahs had ample opportunity to cause an upset against the Sharks, but ultimately did not use the chances that came their way in a 34-20 defeat.

"At Super Rugby level you get a minimum amount of chances to swing the outcome in your favour," Drotske said.

"We will have to capitalise on all points scoring opportunities against the Waratahs."

I am surprised that Rocco has not played before as he is a very useful wing. Johnston should start to get best value from him.

Go Cheetahs!!

Bout bloody time!

He is the only player with a work rate that compare to schalla's.

He puts his body on the line for 80 minutes every game!

I agree Chippo. This is another player who has a committed group of detractors......but every time I see him play he shows he's a warrior. And physically talented, as we saw in his long intercept run, and brilliant take of the high ball last week while being hammered in the air.

But we need to see him at number 8 where our ranks are thin.

Yeah, I also like this fellow. He has his weaknesses, but he also has x factor, and that can't be taught.

Yeah....

He may be a lot smaller than Spoes... but he is a lot harder and more physical.

  • He gives you a full 80 minutes.
  • He has a bit of an explosiveness about him.
  • His tackle count is great
  • He is a fantastic link man.

So im not sure why he would ever be overlooked?

Chippo, Spies currentl yweighs inat 107Kg. Johnston at 105 kg. Very little in it.

Look the big bloosies are Elstadt at 118, and Alberts at a simialr weight.  Then comes Duanne Vermuelen at 116 kg, Jos at 115 kg and Jaque potgeiter at 114 kg.  Schalk weighs in at 111 kg and Koster at 110 kg.

S oyou see the firs tChoice Stormrs loosies weigh in at 118 kg, 116 kg and 111 kg. Add in two locks at 120 kgs andtwo props at 120 kg and a hooke at 110 kg we have a pack of 935 kg.

Now how in the world will the wee bulle live with that pack. They cant and neither could any other side in the super comp. Its is the apck that gav us a chance to win the comp this year but those injuries to Schalk Duanne and Kostner could prove fatal.

another problem I have is that Kitshoff has been overplayed fo rno real compelling reason. Why Harris couldn' t move for a game to the loosehead or we play Blauw or Carstens or Kritzinger - If uninjured etc. Why play the kid into the ground. Kolisi is also being overplayed but at least we can see a reason.
