As for the players Reinach is clearly a better player since playing up north. Malherbe was solid in the WC. Kitshoff is a decent player but not the force the Beast has been. Stephanie is a hard worker, but horribly inadequate as a loosie. Lomp is ordinary, Coetzee the walking wounded and Kolisi is another guy who would be nowhere out of the Bok pack.
There isn’t an ounce of creativity in any of the centres.....no guile, no step, no pass.
And Strauss was never better than Vermeulen.....not on Vermeulen’s worst day.

South Africa has never in its entire history been strong at centre. I never even regarded Jean as an all-round elite centre in terms of skills, but were it not for is lengthy service to Bok rugby, we'd have almost nothing in the professional era. Your lists don't emphasize greatness, but highlight the paupers masquerading as professional, top quality centres.
The current Boks are a step below the almost all tier one teams. They'd never beat the All Blacks that many times, the World Champions were held at arms length, and made to look toothless and devoid of any ability in breaking down defences. They only win good matchups where they are totally dominant physically. That was two key games last year, three if we consider the heavily depleted Welsh side. Rassie has taken the Boks away from the trends of the game. These Boks cannot use the ball, not even with absolutely unstoppable front foot ball and space. Just a few lucky 50/50 moments from the wings when they run out of space.
