How could this competent, but unexceptional player be chosen ahead of the likes of Ardi Savea and Eben Etzebeth. Hell he wasn’t close to the best loosie playing for Ireland last Saturday.

Compare his influence on the match with the other recent Player of the Year winner, Du Pont and its chalk and cheese. Du Pont saved a try with an extraordinary tackle and made so many dangerous breaks. Flier was a nothing burger, another team reward where there was no obvious candidate.

This award should be given to the best player in the world that year, not to the most worthy recipient in the best team.

They're trying to spread the award a bit.Even last year... Dupont is good... but certainly not player of the year.
Can't have Kiwi's and SAFFA's winning every second year.

I can't think of one POTY winner who deserved it. Even when Habana was exceptional in 2007, and a worthy candidate, it should have been Du Preez.

Mozart and l'Grande Merd e will always know better about player performances than real rugby experts do.

LOL a merely competent player.
Perhaps rather when talking about world player of the year 2022 might be best looking at all his matches in 2022 for both club and country rather than focusing on one single game in 2023.
I really don't know who know who's the best player of 2022 is, nor do I care particularly care. I'm sure its very nice for the winning player to receive recognition, but like the rugby world rankings its all rather meaningless outside of willy waving competitions. Unless its your job to pick POTY candidates I highly doubt the average fan would have a clue who the best player player is either as there is simply far too many games played to be able to assess all the potential candidates over the course of the year.
From what I've seen of Van Der Flier, he's well above the level of merely competent. He's an excellent player who's put in big performances time after time.

Eben, Thormeulen and Kolbe were all unlucky not to win it in the last few years...but the had good competition.
