Pietersen in "monster" Japanese deal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by Brenden Nel 22 April 2013, 10:24 Springbok winger JP Pietersen will head to Japan for the next two seasons but will still be available to play for the Springbok team for a large part of the international season. The deal, which is still to be finalised, is “unique” and will bring Pietersen into a different earning league in the next few seasons before 2015 where he will return to South Africa to attempt to make the World Cup squad. The winger – one of the stalwarts of Springbok rugby at the moment – is very close to signing both a contract extension with the Sharks and a deal in Japan which will tie him up until the 2015 season. The deal will also see him being available for selection for both the June and November test series, but not for the Castle Rugby Championship. Pietersen’s agent James Adams told supersport.com he was waiting to finalise the paperwork, but was happy that Pietersen could do “one of the biggest deals ever done in SA Rugby.” “It’s not all finalised yet,” Adams told supersport.com, “But this is a monster deal, one of the biggest ever done in SA, although finances isn’t the reason why he has decided on this move. JP also had interest from both Toulon and Stade Francais but chose the Japanese option because it allowed him to play for the Sharks as well, and he is very loyal to them.” Adams said Pietersen is looking “for a change of environment.” “He needs a break, and needs to do something different. He has been at the Sharks for a long time and is very loyal to them. They’ve been very good to him and he doesn’t necessarily want to leave them.” The deal was done so that Pietersen could head to Japan after the incoming tours series in June, then return at the end of the Japanese season in March to continue playing for the Sharks in Vodacom Super Rugby. “We have spoken to (Springbok coach) Heyneke (Meyer) before we started negotiation and he is happy. Although the deal hasn’t been signed yet, its very close. The nice thing is that he can play for the Springboks, and especially on the end-of-year tour, while earning good money. "Also, the conditioning programme that JP will follow is the Sharks' conditioning programme. We wanted to make sure it was handled the correct way and we are happy with the outcome of this unique deal.” Adams added that the Sharks “have been fantastic in coming to the table on the contract extension” and that Pietersen was looking forward to returning to play Super Rugby for the coastal side.

Not ideal but better than loosing JP entirely. Why cant they do something similar re Bekker then?

Agree at the moment nobody comes close to Bekker. We are going to need him in the Rugby Championship. For the June test I definitely will pick Eben and Steph -Du Toit. as lock pairing.

Beeno

It is a pity Pietersen is going - and I wish him all the best.

However, I am not happy to see him playing in the relative minor June tests and then have to play rookies or near rookies in the Championship tests.   I would rather that they forgt about Pietersen inthe June tests and get the possible Championship contenders on the Park. in June.

We have seen players going to France and coming back in rather poor physical condition and also getting injured more easily since the dietary and training regimes are less strenuous in the countries they go to.   The end up coming back - like Grant - gets injured and cannot play for long periods.

For that reason I think it wise not to select players playing overseas and the only players so selected must really be absolutely crucial and not detrimental to local players performances.

Big loss - but unfortunately due to huge financial offers made to players and the exchange rate.   Howevr, their selection for SA teams should certainly be handled with great care and limited to the most essential cases only..

I would pick them. Du Toit is calling the lineouts fo rthe sharks and getting some experience there.

we could have a very different tight five.

How about this for a possible WC side.

Coenie, Strauss (capt), Malherbe, Etzebeth and Du Toit. This is a young tight five with huge promise.

Loosies, Vermuelen, Louw and Elstadt/Labbers

Reinach, Goosen/Lmabie,

Serfontein, JJ,

JP, Van der Heever and a recovered Frans or Willie Le roux.
Resrves - Kitshoff, Bissie (He could start) Bekker, Arno Botha

Groom, Lambie, Allende Taute

What is great is that you could play that side right now. Give them a couple of years together, manage them carefully re workload, get in a decent backline coach  and they should win the 2015 WC.

I get the feeling we could peak at the right time Bok be?  Can we do the right things, make the right decisions now and build on a solid foundation. Meyer I am trusting is a builder. Bit conservative but tends over time to get it right. Here is hoping!

yet another bok great leaves our shores. the madness will only leave us with no depth come the RWC. as we have seen with kanko the jap league is not up the high standards and players conditioning is not priorty.

@beeno meyers one eyed views has cost him in the past and from what i have seen at the training run one can expect the same old crud that we have seen last year.  his reckless selection policies and loyalitys for overseas based players like pienaar and louw has caused this massive exodus in my view. he has set the standard and we are suffering for it.

we do have talent but that means nothing if that talent is not retained in your local systems. the rate we are going at our unions will be constantly be building and will never have a mature team.

on your team list i like the names but the likes of van der heever, kitshoff, allende, has done nothing to warant selection so maybe your WP blinkers are on again :P

selectiing young forwards has never been a problem but the backkline is the cancer that we need to treat in the country. ball recycling speed of the forwards, breakdown skillsets and off the ball running and decision making should be the biggest priorty for meyer.

There was a massive exodus long before Meyer selected Pienaar and Francois Louw.

the age of the players are younger. the likes of bakkies and co was already at there end of the careers but one cannot have this current situation.
