The Sharks' coaching carousel spins again as John Plumtree prepares to exit stage left this weekend, post his team's Investec Champions Cup battle with Toulouse. The shake-up doesn't stop there; stepping up to the plate for the remainder of the season is none other than former Springbok wing, JP Pietersen. This change comes on the heels of a particularly dismal start to the season that has seen the Sharks floundering at 14th in the United Rugby Championship (URC) standings.

Last weekend's 44-17 thrashing at the hands of Connacht only highlighted the need for change. With the Sharks trailing behind their South African counterparts, the Bulls, Lions, and the leading Stormers, it seemed the writing was on the wall for Plumtree, prompting an accelerated departure.

"I have always been, and will always remain, a Sharks man through and through."

Plumtree expressed his deep connection to the team and his unwavering commitment over the years. Despite the early exit, Sharks CEO Shaun Bryans underscored the decision as a strategic move aimed at fostering long-term success and stability within the team. He lauded Plumtree's contributions and confirmed his continued involvement in a yet-to-be-defined role within the club's high-performance system.

Taking over the reins, Pietersen is set to navigate the team through this transitional phase. His prior experience and history with the Sharks position him as a fitting successor to uphold and build upon the standards set by Plumtree.

"The Sharks have shaped my entire rugby life and stepping into this role is both an honour and a responsibility I hold with deep respect,"

Pietersen remarked, acknowledging the significant influence Plumtree has had on him both personally and professionally.

With a focus on stability, clarity, and expressing the team's true potential, Pietersen is ready to steer the Sharks towards a brighter future. Meanwhile, the search for a new permanent head coach is already underway, set to be finalized by the start of next season, ensuring that the team's leadership remains robust and forward-thinking.
