It has been reported that Smith sustained a further inijury and is consequently retiring from all rugby.   I am very sorry to hear that - but I must admit I do not think he should even have considered coming back to play on Super 15 level.   At 32 he really was looking for serious trouble by starting to play again.  He lasted less than one full  game before his latest injury.

If he was 4 years younger - a return would have been reasonable - at his age it was totally unreasonable and unlikely to succeed.

Let me add - I am not sure that Burger iis not in the sam boat.   Hpefully not - but I am stll worried about it.

that news is not unexpected but still very sad. juan smith was a fantastic player and i rated him very very highly.

all the best to juan smith and his future endevours, he can at least retire knowing he achived what many can only dream of, represnting ur country which is the highest level any player can then starting in the team and winning a RWC, the highest achievement any rugby team can win.

@mikey,

its hard for players of smiths caliobre to call it quits when there really is som much that he can offer, the spirit is willing but body is not.
i think it was worth it to himself to at least give it one more crack, now he can carry on with the rest of his life knowing he left it all out there like the true chapion that he is.
players like smith are why the cheetahs are my fave saffa club.

A great player ... but hey ... why so glum ... ?

He's only retiring.

It's not as if he's kicked the bucket.
