Off to Toulon in September ...... with NZ's resources its a bit of a 'jawellnofine'.
Julian Savea ........ au revoir
..Good for 'the Bus' cashing in now if that's the case... Replacing Fijian flyer and new Fijian centre Semi Radradr a who is off to Bordeaux by the looks...
I wonder if his former teammate Ma'a Nonu had anything to do with the move as Nonu has been at Toulon for a couple of years...
In NZ Savea has copped a lot of flak and people are quick to forget the contribution he's made to NZ' success... i doubt NZ would have even won the last RWC without Savea - he was the top try scorer...but it's a dog eat dog world and yr only as good as yr last game here in NZ
The rise of league convert Laumape and Aso in the Canes centres has contributed to his downfall i think.. as it's meant Savea has seen less and less ball out wide...maybe he could have gone looking for it in the centres a bit more if he had the license to do so...
The scintillating form of players like Reiko Iaone and Waisake Naholo not helping his AB case either. But looking forward to seeing how he goes in next years European Champions Cup if he's in fact Toulon bound...
Apparenty he has signed:
"French website RMC Sport has reported the big-money deal which will see Savea move to the club after he finishes his Super Rugby commitments with the Hurricanes. An official announcement is expected out of Toulon soon."
Best of luck to him he certainly contributed to NZ rugby.
Probably saving NZrugby a sthitload of dollars as well, him & Retallick signed huge contracts.
Damn shame ,get sick and tired of cashed up NH arseholes buying up SH players .
Maybe their teams wouldnt be such shit if they made their own ,look at the Barretts Dad hes got the right idea maybe we need to keep him supplied with viagra so they could maybe pop out a couple more for RWC 2039.
No sooner did I post this than Grregor Paul has said much the same RE: France and the way their national team has gone downhill .
As for Savea I dont know if the ABs want to set a precedent for a player mid contract.
Savea was never a speed merchant - a very strong ball carrier with the pace of a loosie. He scored his tries by breaking tackles of physically weaker wings.
For the rest he is rather problematic too - his pace deficiency has caused defense problems in the past and Savea is not the kid of player that would loo for work himself. There are at least 5 better wings in NZ at present.
Fact is he is going nowhere insofar as further development as a player is concerned and he is doing well by going to Toulon. The club is rebuilding after a comparatively poor year in Top 14 and the European club championship. They got rid of two question mark players in Vermeulen and Nonu, whose contracts were not renewed,.so we will see what happens next insofar s Toulon i s concerned..
