In a display of sheer dominance and unrelenting power, the Junior Springboks opened their Junior World Championship title defense by obliterating Uruguay with a staggering 104-7 victory in Tbilisi. The match saw the Junior Boks dismantle the tournament newcomers with a breathtaking 16 tries, signaling their intent to retain the crown with a merciless performance.
The tone was set from the start, with South Africa quickly stamping their authority on the game. It took just seven minutes for Stormers centre Markus Muller to cut through the Uruguayan defense for the opening try, promptly converted by flyhalf Alzeadon Felix. The onslaught continued as winger Jordan Steenkamp, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack, added two tries before the break, with Felix's boot perfect from the tee.
The Uruguayan side, struggling against the tide, succumbed to a penalty try following a collapsed maul, further compounding their woes with hooker Sebastian Perez receiving a yellow card. South Africa exploited the numerical advantage ruthlessly, with tries flowing from Rasima Khosa, Ethan Adams, and Khuthadzo Rasivhaga.
After halftime, the Junior Boks wasted no time extending their lead, as Cheswill Jooste darted over the line to continue the scoring spree. The momentum was unstoppable, with replacement players also making significant impacts. Siphosethu Mnebelele, the tournament captain coming off the bench, was among the scorers, highlighting the depth and talent in the South African ranks.
"We executed our game plan to perfection. The boys showed great intensity and discipline from the whistle,"
noted Junior Boks coach Kevin Foote, clearly satisfied with his team’s performance. As the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read like a testament to South Africa's potential and prowess at this level. Uruguay, despite their efforts, managed a solitary try from Sebastian Delmao, converted by Juan Francisco Pereira, a small consolation in a game dominated by the defending champions.
The Junior Springboks' next challenge is against Wales, where they aim to maintain their formidable form. If this game was a statement, the message was loud and clear: the Junior Boks are here not just to compete, but to dominate.
