Once again proved they are the real deals comprehensively outplaying SBW and Crotty. Question marks raised against these two displays complete ignorance. This series proved a few things - PSDT is world class despite playing out of position Faf was instrumental in creating opportunities for the Boks. Coetzee discarding him last year proves what a poor coach he was preferring the utterly useless Cronje instead. Same applies to the recall of Willie another Coetzee discard. Willie is special in his ability to create. Dyantyi is the find of the year what a class act. I’ve always rated Kolbe but his size is an issue. I prefer Nkosi. Pollard in form is our best option at 10. Jantjies has plenty of creativity but I concede in that he lacks the hard edge and only thrives in an environment where he has complete faith in his coaches backing, something he has at the Lions. Kitshoff is better than Beast and it’s good to see Rassie acknowledging this. Marx is the best hooker in the game Malherbe was solid but I’m not convinced he is our best tighthead, I prefer Wilco Louw and Thomas Etzebeth was huge against the AB’s Mostert is a passenger at test level, all energy limited productivity. Simply not physical enough. We would be far better served with one of PSDT, Lood, RG, Jenkins or Paul Willemse partnering Eben Our loose trio is our biggest oversight on Rassie’s behalf. Only Kolisi merits his place and has been outstanding with ball in hand and defensively at 6. PSDT has done a great job at 7 but is not athletic enough for a true loosie. Move him back to lock. JL du Preez or Jacques du Plessis or Ackerman are our best options at 7 We have got our No8’s completely wrong. Whitely is just not physical enough, like Mostert they are both nice provincial players. Louw is so over rated adds no value at all. Too big for a 6, too small for 7 and not gifted enough for 8. Marcel Coetzee or Dan du Preez are our best options at 8 Rassie is getting it mostly right especially amongst the backs - Id like to see Gelant, Serfontein, Janse v Rensburg and Vorster brought into the equation. The forwards need tweaking, we have better options at tighthead, we need more physicality partnering Eben and we need a better balance in the back row. Rassie needs to punch clever when it comes to the EOYT selections - he needs to secure the services of overseas based players like Paul Willemse, Jacques du Plessis, Ackerman, Pierre Schoeman and Ollie Kebble before they pledge allegiance to the countries they are plying their trade in. All are test standard and would add value. I’d love to see a Willemse/Etzebeth lock combo, the grunt and athleticism of du Plessis at 7 and some young loosehead backup to Kitshoff in Schoeman and Kebble

Damian was slow in general and slowed the attack. Kriel was very quick and hit the line hard. He was begging for space. Damian could not straighten up the attack, thus robbing our outside backs of space. He had two good carries in the first half but missed all of his open field tackles and was generally weak in contact. He was beaten cleanly in our 22, which allowed New Zealand to score shortly after. Was largely ineffective.

This was Kriel's best game if the season by some distance. He is a competitor, I'll give him that. Not great on defence though. His interaction with Willie and the wings is particularly pleasing. He used to be a cul-de-sac like Damian, but shows so much more ball-in-hand now. His work with the back three will probably force Rassie to oust Am, unless his defensive lapses rear their ugly heads again.

Thus far? Damian was not even close to being an adequate 12. Was he better than  Crotty in this tournament? No. He was plan g at 13 on Saturday which backfired. The man is an out and out 12. Very poor call by Hansen. Though Sonny was anonymous, he made far fewer mistakes than Damian. Considering that Damian has only edged a player coming back from a long injury absence, we must put into perspective how much value he truly has to the team.

André has been our best 12 and has effortlessly outplayed Damian.

Well Dave lets see where we are in accord: 1 Willie and Faf have been key to our improved fortunes. 2 Pollard is our best 10....rarely makes a silly mistake. 3 Louw is a superior bet to Malherbe. 4 Eben has reestablished himself as our number 1 lock. 5 Kolisi does some really good things, like making Allende's try...but is also very ineffective as a cleaner. 6 Stephanie is a lock not a flank. 7 A Willemse/Etzebeth combination could be awesome. 8 Kriel, 3 years after the WC is finally learning centre play, but the Bok centres had much better ball than the NZ starters had. Allende had the ball 19 times to SBW's 4 times. He should have been more prominent. ....... Where we disagree.....Allende will flop on the YE tour as he has all year, Rohan is worth watching to see if he recaptures his 2016 form...the Du Preez twins need more time and more nous.....Mostert does vast work beyond running the lineouts but should be a candidate for 7.

I agree, Mostert at 7 is a very intriguing thought, and Snyman partnering Eben. Mostert has grown a lot this RC. These are fine margins to call at times.

The point most people aren't making, New Zealand's midfield was a muddled mess. Crotty is no 13. Sonny lacked any kind of sharpness coming back from injury. We all knew it was a gamble and it didn't pay off. You won't have the luxury if facing a midfield mess like this next year! That Damian couldn't really assert himself is very worrying. He'll be good for another 40 caps though, the media and commentators gush over him. He doesn't even need a good tour. The media darlings will be exonerated. It'll be interesting to see where the excuses will be found. Is it the player or Rassie?

Dave

Don't try and argue with the serial liar Mozart and his co-liar AO/   They are on their standard anti campaign against all of Erasmus. Du Toit. Kriel and  De Allende.

They are worse than ever - Meyer is king and Erasmus rubbish = Morne Steyn is king - all other flyhalfs are BS compared to him,  Am is a huge improvement from Kriel. etc

They have elevated themselves  to the top rugby analysts in the world and they can write whatever they want and lies ca n be justified on that basis.

Moz I disagree on de Allende he has been effective all year - rediscovered his form pre his injury. Is one of those players that has the ability to beat the first defender through sheer power much like a Marx or Bismark and has added to offload to his game. He is a real handful when playing with confidence as he is now. Rassie made a huge mistake not backing Jessie from the start, especially in the year where he is one of the few Bulls players to stand out in a season that promised so much but delivered very little for them. For me he has always had the attributes to make a great 13, speed, step and good physical presence, but he always seemed like most to be playing with the fear of failure hanging over his head. Never backing his talent and at stages taking the conservative solid approach. Something changed in him this year, maybe it’s a maturity thing but he now seems to be backing his talent and playing with confidence. The du Preez twins have come on leaps and bounds adding touches to their brawn. Like Marx and Bismark they are physical freaks and always break tackles with ball in hand. At test level we need everyone of these kind of players on the park. On the centre subject as I’ve always said it’s so damn hard for centres to make a consistent impression at test level, there is just no space to strike and it’s why I get so frustrated with you guys and your negative takes on our centres. The best side in the game in the AB’s has two quality centres beaten by our pair but next week it could be the other way round. No test side settles on their centre selections not even the AB’s - how many have they used this year - 5. Our expectations of test centres seem to still be based on the Danie Gerber era - would Danie run riot today - no he would not

Damian isn't getting anyone away. He is too lateral, eats up space. His natural inclination is to go wide and look for space. He is more dangerous when he has it, but makes poor decisions. He isn't very physical and often slows down before making contact, hunch in his shoulders and burrowing into the defenders. Everything he does is so slow. Against the All Blacks, it really stood out. Everyone else had intensity and zip. He didn't. He hasn't had a truly standout game for Boks this year. His best was the first England test.

If you'd kindly point out some specifics, we can assess his game more deeply. You should stick around for video I've 80% competed. Damian and André's entire test performance thus far. I hope it finally puts to rest the Damian mythos, where it belongs.

I don’t need your analysis to formulate an accurate take on Damian’s performance this last test. Best centre on the day by a proverbial mile. I’d rather watch Corination Street or Strictly Come Dancing

The lock depth is better than what it has ever been, and the loose forward depth is the worst it has ever been.

The top 10 SA locks could make international test teams, but not that many of the SA loosies would.

None of the loosies is very effective at the rucks, regardless if they are big or small. (except Vermeulen, and Louw- when on form)

In this context converting some locks to loosies may be the best option just to get more test quality players onto the pitch.

The donkey twins are more like locks than loosies, and a bull in a china shop has more finesse than they do at the base of a ruck. Given they have a father that was a Springbok scrumhalf, it is surprising they lack basic passing and catching skills. Need to spend less time in the gym and more on skills and running.

Mostert could make a good blindside flank, and he at least hits the rucks- unlike the donkey twins.

Disagree Shark we have quality 6’s in Kolisi, Jaco Kriel and Kwagga with only Kwagga a true turnover contester, with Kolisi and Kriel being running 6’s. I’ve always thought Carr was better suited to 6 and is a quality player. At 7 we have grunt options in Jacques du Plessis, JL du Preez and Ackerman. At 8 we have options in Marcel Coetzee and Dan du Preez, with Notshe providing a good running impact off the bench. There are some other quality loosies in Wiese, Kirsten, Liebenberg, Oupa and Brink. Our loosie depth is better than other countries

So good to have Fairweather Dave back. Dave I do agree though on every item that you have brought up. PSDT is world class, but probably lacks a bit of pace to be a genuine 7. I’d prefer him at 5. I’d love to see Augustus at 8. He is a bulldozer of note with a great future. Maybe Dan du Preez at 7? De Allende is playing well again. He had a really crap 2017, largely due to injury.

Agreed I like the look of Agustus he looks to have lost the puppy fat he was carrying as a Baby Bok. JL du Preez or Dan at 7 would work PSDT is physical and cumbersome ie perfect for a lock. He is hardly athletic and will therefore over time be exposed as a flanker like Ben Young’s and Genia did to him. Some big locks are athletic enough to pass as flanks like Jacques du Plessis of Montpellier, possibly Jenkins of the Bulls - both athletes - du Plessis was a SA junior javelin thrower Jenkins played provincial schools cricket as an all rounder. Mostert should be a 7 as he is not big enough for lock

Jean-Luc is a test quality loosie. I don't know why he was discarded so readily. As Sharkie says, we don't have depth in those positions, we can't mess around. We have enough quality to form reliable rotations to keep the squad fresh. We must use them.

The gap between Faf and everyone else is quite big. Seeing as Faf is so critical to our game, this is quite a problem. I'm not sold on Papier. I prefer what I saw in Van Zyl. We have usable pieces at 15, but nobody who can replicate Willie's playmaking ability. Faf and Willie are our two most important backs.

Duane Vermeulen is the most effective Bok loosie at the breakdown. He has another year left in him to cover until the World Cup.
With Marx on the pitch at the same time, the breakdown may be sufficient for the EOYT. Coenie Oosthuizen can also be effective at the ruck,

Agree with most of what you say Dave, disagree about Nazeem Car and Jantjies, for mine they should never be in a Bok jumper. Same can be said of string bean Mostert who really shortchanges the Bok pack. It boggles the mind when ball carriers are mentioned in the same breath as Mostert.

Yeah I don’t get the Mostert thing at all. I’ll give it to him that he has plenty of heart and energy but that does not make an effective test lock. Had he been a brute of a man he would have been the worlds best lock. So what we get is a lad charging at a defender and making little impression - same applies to his defence, he can effect low technical tackles but he can’t impose any physicality in his hits. The fact that he is joining Gloucester might be a Bok blessing. I’m yet to see anything significant from Papier in fact he was pretty disappointing in his few outings for the Bulls. He comes with a big wrap so time will tell. I like the look of v Zyl - good service nothing flash - solid but we need more than solid As long as we don’t see the utterly useless Ross Cronje I can live with the other options out there. With Faf unavailable I’d go for Reinach

Reinach was an awful flop as test scrummie. Gelant is another Willemse type....but without the pace. For those who don't get Mostert's value....I'd suggest you read the latest mozcroscope which I'll bring up for you. No Bok player is in the right place more often. Allende botched 2 tries....missed 30% of his tackles....and the defenders beaten were all in slow tractoring, prop forward like, runs....not dangerous at all. Hope that helps.

The stats don't reflect how poor Damian truly is on defence. Video review is horrifying when you see how he is making those "successful" tackles.

Mostert is a complete passenger has never made an impression at test level. Etzebeth, Willemse, Lood, PSDT, Snyman and Jenkins are all far far better licks. Ruan Botha, Jean Kleyn, JD Schickerling and Lourens Erasmus are all better locks - that’s how far down the pecking order he is. Might have made a good 7 but test lock he is not. He is however better than some locks that have insulted us with Bok appearances like Albert vd Bergh, Muller de Allende was by far the best centre on the field. He ran through SBW with ease, made an impression with ball in hand every time he carried it. He had a great test and that’s a fact

Lood isn't a test lock.

Damian was totally ineffective. Hasn't had a good test yet. Too weak, lacks skills, can't make decisions, can't tackle and is slow physically and mentally. André is vastly superior.

I still have questions about Mostert at lock, but can't deny he is contributing. He can still contribute at 7, and Snyman with Eben. The numbers on the back is one thing, how they are used is another.
