The accepted wisdom is that Lambie is the runner. Morne a dull kicker. That swapping to Lambie will spark the attacking game. But the 2013 S15 stats tell a different story.

Morne played 15 pool matches...Lambie 14 at flyhalf.

But they both ran the ball about 90 times, Lambie 90...Morne 92.

Lambie made 344 metres at 3.8 a carry, Morne 474 at 4.74 per carry.

Lambie made 2 clean breaks, Morne made 5

Lambie beat 7 defenders, Morne beat 12 defenders

They both made 90.3 per cent of their tackles.....but Morne made 121 to Lambie's 103

Morne scored 223 points, most in the competition... 157  for Lambie

This is not an argument to restore Morne, I'm happy with Pollard. But it is a shot across the bow of those that believe Lambie is going to spark the Bok running  game.

Unless he has changed dramatically he is towards the kicking end of the spectrum....not perhaps as far as Morne, but more of a kicker than a runner. But he is more of a chip, grubber, cross kicker vs an up and under kicker. Maybe that's progress.

Personally I'd rather go with a natural runner like Pollard....I don't think Lambie will do much as a starter in 10 channel. What we saw in 2013, we saw again against the Poms a match in which he gained zero metres.

What the hell is this - another Morne campaign to get him back into favour.   You never learnt about Morne - but that is really normal.  You never learn bout duds in rugby - now do you?   Prefer to remain teh moron on this site.
This after Morne buggerd up test after test over the past few years - especially against the All Blacks - but in most other cases where we lost tests as well.

Mozart:
"This is not an argument to restore Morne, I'm happy with Pollard."

Mike:
"What the hell is this - another Morne campaign to get him back into favour."

Proper reading clears up so much confusion.

Morne is a real man, Lambie well -- he is a wee Lambie.
Seriously, Pollard is the one to develop but he needs backup (2 additional players who can play 10 is essential for the RWC IMO).  Morne many not make himself available anyway.

 Pakie
Then why this long story about Morne?   I think that Mozart is on his standard campaign in favour of Morne - trying to discredit Lambie.
Mozart always shout about stats if it fits his book  - but ignores it when it suits him.   What he did not mention is the Lambie was playing inside of Fatso Steyn - all 115 kgs of him until Plumtree said no more and dropped him - so no attacking play could be initiated by Lambie even if he tried.
But then Mozart's usage of stats are very selective - and he never entioned how many times Morne handled the ball and how many times he kicked the ball - same with Lambie.   He also fails to realize a fact concerning Morne's playing style - after kicks downfield - Morne falls back to receive the return kick and make up a considerable distance before launching another kick.   That happens time and again and it was pointed out to him previosuly when he came with the Steyn story - when he tried to support Steyn's election as Springbok flyhalf and obviously ignored.   In Lambie's case it happens far less - because his kicking game was better directed and less aimless than Morne's standard kicking game.
The other thing he conveniently left out was how many possession losses was caused by Morne and Lambie.   So we have the Mozart standard case of selective quoting of part of the stats to make a point - which is pointl ess anyway.

Mike I'm certain that Moz is having you on and says these things to bait you...crumbs I always rated Moz an intelligent guy...nobody could be so dumb as to believe that robotic, non thinking programmed conventional flyhalf, MS, is could ever be compared to PL...that's too ridiculous for words...only a bird brain would include MS now, at long last, HM has finally woken up and things are looking up...due to Handre's and Pat's inclusion.

One thing is for very sure, there's not the remotest chance that any side in the world could win the WC with a flyhalf that plays like MS...if Meyer ever brings him back, then I'm afraid we are back to the dark times and I'll personally lose interest in the Boks game and support France, Ireland or even the AB's. It would be embarrassing to say the least.

Comparing the utterly useless Morne Steyn to the talented Lambie is insulting. If Lambie had started as many tests as useless Morne by now, the lad would be a legend.

One is a ponderous plodder who has only made the grade thanks to his boot, while the other is a talented all round rugby player.

The fact that Morne played a single test for the Boks is an insult in itself.

But more to the point, imagine being a sad enough rugby supporter who actually prefers Morne over Lambie - very sad

Pollard: Pollard is seen as the individual that "gets the backline going" yet he is not a flat runner who distributes once he holds the defender. In fact, we have yet to see him do that even once. If you want an example of a flat running 10 that gets the ball away having fixed his man then look at Cruden.

Morné: Contrary to popular opinion Morné is not, and never has been merely a kicker. I have posted stats that show from the years 2009 until 2012 Carter kicked more ever year than Morné. Fans perceive there is kicking happening and always blame Morné, when in fact we mostly use our 9s as our primary tactical kicker. In 2009 it was Du Preez and in 2012 it was Pienaar.

Lambie: Lambie is first and foremost a fullback, when he excelled at one point at schoolboy level it was at fullback, not flyhalf. He has never shown any confidence or authority in the position and no team has ever thrived with him at 10. Look at that hospital pass we saw last week when around the 10 minute mark against England, we had numbers on attack around their 22 but Lambie went the wrong direction on the play to where the England defence was heavily stacked and threw a slow floating pass to Serfontein who got mauled and we conceded a penalty holding onto to the ball. He can't make decisions at 10. He has no feel for the position. His passing is too slow, he isn't physically strong enough to take contact on defence or attack. We heard how he broke 4 tackles against Australia when in fact he ran through the midst of 3 defenders who couldn't really get a hand on him - that's a big difference.

This unintelligent fan has on numerous occasions said he doesn't want a kicking halfback. He wants a halfback that clears the ruck quick and accurately as a primary job, then snipe and the odd kick as variation.

Pollard attacks the line, he is decisive when he does it, that is why he creates more space and hesitation in the opposition defence. He is still a work in progress as far as tactical kicking is concerned.

Lambie has finesse, to think he cannot control a game is ludicrous. He is a smart player, a bloody good defender, finds gaps and can beat defenders. He knows how to read a game.

Morne has never been able to create any doubt in opposition defence, yes he can attack the line successfully, but when last did he do that?

Lambie is in fact useful, but the useless one is Pollard.

At Loftus we were struggling and things got calm after Morne came on. In Argentina we were on our way to lose to Arg and Morne came on to help save the match. In Cape Town we were on our way to another loss when Lambie came on to save that match. In Ireland, Pollard was being himself again, when we lost that game.

At the Bulls, Serfontein and JJ became Boks playing outside Morne. This year, outside Pollard, Serfontein and JJ looked like, uhm well, Serfontein an JJ. Both looked hopeless. JJ even lost his spot in the EXPANDED Bok squad.

Lambie is fine. Pollard is crap!

Lambie has no physicality on defence having to go low on every big runner which opens up space for the offload and allows them to move forward into the tackle.
Lambie cannot pick out options when passing, cannot sum up situations and is too nervy.

Lambie has no finesse whatsever. No step, no speed. He is less at 10 than Earl Rose. At least Earl had a bag of tricks up his sleave with a far better skill set, both can't play flat in front of the gainline. How many defenders has Lambie beaten in his test career? I tallied them not so long ago, was quite skant. He beat nobody last Saturday. 2 runs and 0 meters.

Morné last did that this Summer you . And no, Pollard goes to ground after all of those runs, he does not ever play a flat attacking game like Cruden. I'n not knocking him for it, simply pointing out the fact that it doesn't happen, so the conclusion is that he does not in fact create space like you say.

 The Trooth Fairy
Morne came on and he got charged down in a kick 5 meters out and the Argentinians nearlty scored a try - if that is calming things down - it is a joke in bad taste.
We quickly forgot th two tries scored by Pollard against the  AB's.  Pollard did not lose th test against the Irish, the team did - they were hopekless on the day.   Be it as it may we have Pollard. Lambie and Goosen on line - we do not need the hopeless matchloser Morne.

Lestat, your opinions are as deluded as you are. Check Lambie's tackle stats this year. It is around 90%, regardless of whether you believe he has no physicality.

Go check his "step and dummy' against OZ at Cape Town vs Australia.

You rely too much on stats and forget observation puts everything into context.

A deft little touch here, a smart kick there, makes a difference, it has to do with subtleties that win games.

Lestat, it is clear you watch a different game to the majority of us. All the stats in the world will never convince a rugby man that Morne is anything but a ponderous plodder who has about as much attacking flair as a dead fish.

One only has to watch his highlights package covering a decade of rugby to realise exactly what he is made of. He has never been a threat with ball in hand, never will be and to add insult to injury he cant tackle........but wait for it, to his credit he can kick.

You have to be a pretty sad coach and an equally sad supporter to see any positives in the likes of a Morne type pivot.

 Letsallbemorons
You really are either very funny or entirely moronic.   You carry on about Lambie going low - but never mentioned that your hero Morne missed nearly as mny tackles as he made.
Whenever I read something written by you I first of all laugh and then pity you for being so stupid.  You write a lot of jargon about Lambie - which has been contradicted in every  game he played in.  Then you campare him to Earl Rose - which in itself is moronic and shows that you have no idea of what you are talking about.
When I read all the jargon you write abbout Morne Steyn I really cannot reconcile that at all with the real Morne.   The real Morne is not a flyhalfs backside.   He is clueless when to kick and when to pass balls.   When he kicks balls its mostly inaccurate and aimless  and when he passes balls he makes hosp[ital passes to the inside center.  Reason - he is not a threat at alll from an attacking perspective - since he never attacks the gain line.  Numerous AB observers said they were seriously put off nby Morne's absence from the Springbok side - since they know to a T how to deal with him.   In case he passes - the defense has already drifted outward and the inside center has tto or three defenders on top of him by the time he gets the ball.   Incae he kicks the flyhalf and wings fall back to collect the kick - which is normally straight down their breadbasket.
"If anything Morné is the most measured and balanced of all our options at 10, the least reckless without being passive."    He is the most passive flyhalf I have ever seen in a Springbok jersey since he never attacks the gain line.

Morne has ONE Asset only - he can kick at goal and achieve about an 80% success rate.   That sums Morne's only asset in any team up 100%.   For the rest he is not an acceptable flyhalf - even his club is allegedly trying to get out of the contract they signed with him.   If he was such a good flyhalf he would be acceptable to his club and to the supporters in SA - and a force feared by opposing teams.  He is anything but - and a huge majority of the Springbok supporters are really delighted with his ommission from the Springbok team.   The experts from other countries has repeatedly said that Morne is so predictable - they know excatly hw to handle him.   That inessense is why he is a useless pivot for the Springbok backline.
Then about Lambie - have you ever met h im to make the personality assessment that you claim about him.   If you have not met and interviewed him - how diid your arrive at the assessment of his  character as describd by you?   what you wrote here is unsubstantiated drivel of the wirst kind - of which you have really no proof.
You apparently are a Morne groupie - and nobodyelse can be compared to him.  Be that if you want to - but don't write character assassination comments about other players whom you completely misjudged and whose achievements have surpassed Morne's entirely because of prejudice on your part.

Analysis of flyhalves by nit-picking and splitting hairs is a futile augument....on any function of the game except perhaps the front 1,2,3 and certainly applies to the halves the heart and pulse of the game of rugby. Technically there is some merit in this approach and analysis but one has to have vision on the wider picture of the game. I'm certainly no expert...but even I can see the difference between an exciting game and dour boring and predictable tactics...a huge failure in a country that has oodles and oodles of talent...high school rugby is very advanced in this country...I often go down to Kearsney and Maritzburg College and up to Hilton and Michaelhouse and then down the road to Glenwood and Westville...if in Bloem I would be at Grey College and in the WP, Paarl boys and Gym, Bishops, SACS and Rondebosch and watch these youngsters  ...the country is oozing talent but our biggest problem is with the political and administrative bodies, lack of talent in administrators and more than this the lack of creativeness of staid and conventional coaches. Sadly it's hard to believe that the best coaches are school coaches...intelligent and dedicated men...humble school teachers with humble salaries but very intelligent and huge hearts...I know this personally...our school coach... a legend, was even tempted by the late Dr Craven to move from Natal to WP...from vice head to headmaster to the best rugby school down there at the time. He declined simply because he loved our school was a man of integrity and could never be swayed, tempted or bought.

One thing that's very obvious to me...I look the wider picture of the game...you see the difference already when either Patrick and Handre play...it's so more attractive...more enterprising, innovative and creative...boring rugby is hard to watch ...especially with predictable MS...you can read this guy like a book...any conventional player can have an entrance to a SA side, despite the rest 14's talent...to vest your hopes on a conventional player like MS who you can read like a book...mundane, predictable...yes he had good conventional skills but forgive me ...it's like comparing a Tretchikov to a Van Gogh or Rembrandt... if you get my drift.

Thanks Saffex...at least we have something in common...I'm different than most of you...although I love my Boks and Sharks, and even our Bulls and Stormers I love the game more than the side... I love rugby fullstop and always give credit to the winners and have stopped blaming the refs... some competant some very suspect but some very weak characters that conduct the game to popularity. I do not witch hunt but it's very sad that some events happen in the world stage...especially when the most coveted trophy is displayed... players are pumped and this accolade is huge... I saw the final in 2007 and 1995 in the flesh...it's breathtaking...like winning a war. My heart always goes out to the minnows however and a huge respect for these guys with hearts tougher than any lion...a remote chance but a fearless resolve.

I'm not totally against MS ...in fact have huge respect for him...he is a good player but is not the tool for the job.

A win is a win they say, ask Just Win but there is a different context in a good rugby when men great or not so great give every thing they have , win or lose there is a winner in us all. All rugby players whether they are in Moscow,Cardiff, Cape Town, Sydney, London or Auckland have the same spirit, toughness and will to win.

Morne , I respect you too...a great servant who had a role to play in SA rugby but like all old soldiers there's a time to bow out.

Lets salute all those that qualify and have won their right to play on the centre stage...long live rugby!

" Morné is still relevant to the Boks. Lambie had his chance, actually, chances, but blew them all. Just a shame my countrymen in mentally impotent." by lestat.

Meyer before the England test

Lambie has been knocking at the door for some time now, and his inspirational performances against Australia and New Zealand in the home leg of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship have certainly made him a prime candidate for a starting role. Add to that the historical bit of guiding the Boks unbeaten through a November tour back in 2012 and the 24 year old will know what awaits him in London.

“Pat started at Twickenham for us two years ago and did very well,” said Meyer

“He’s playing well at the moment and I wanted to give him the opportunity to start. Pat is tactically very astute and even though he’s still pretty young, he’s got a lot of experience.

Meyer after the England test

Meanwhile Lambie, still only 24 but playing his 38th international, guided the Springboks around Twickenham with the assurance of a test veteran.

In total, he kicked 16 points, including the match-clinching drop-goal that sealed South Africa's victory four minutes from time by putting them two scores ahead.

"Pat's always played well for us end of year, specifically in this weather," explained Meyer ahead of next week's test against Italy in Padova.

"He's a very level-headed guy and took the right options, especially the drop-goal. It was the right type of game for him and he showed he's a match-winner."

My attitude towards Morne is respectful...but rugby like all sport has it's highs and lows...it's readjustments, hopefully more and changes of strategy.

Morne was never useless ...a very functional basic flyhalf but one that never set the rugby field alight...many flyhalves that do not boast his stastistics are far more pleasing to watch...we won't go near the Hugo porta, Phil bennetts, Keith Oxlees etc, not to Jonny Wilkinson or Dan Carter, Martin Hernandez, Freddie Michalak, Thierry Le Croix and Dimitri Vachvilli...made watching Bok rugby a stressful encounter.

Lets bury this issue and don't this man anymore...it's time for our lion to die and the new sharp on the toes move in...that's life...it happens to all of us in different ways...we must just have the honesty, and humility to accept it.

"Guided the Springboks around Twickenham with the poise of a veteran". You have to laugh. Look at the last 20 minutes. He made a series of poor mistakes and finally landed a drop kick. That's the poise of a veteran?

Lestat is dead right about Lambie's tackling...he can't go high and hold up the player. There are times to go low, and Lambie does this well. But there are times you have to get into the passing zone and disrupt the offload. He will be a target as teams start to analyze him in the Bok flyhalf role

Problem here is that in his tests since las t year Morne Steyn missed a huge percentage of his tackles - he could not go high - neither could he go low.   Concerning the tackles of some players - you really go ballistic - because they do not tackle low - in the case of others it suddenly is an option.
"He will be a target as teams start to ana lyze him in the Bok flyhalf role."

You surely must be kidding here - Lambie has played at flyhalf for years and if they have not ana lyzed him by now - they never will.   The issue here is that a player must make sure he does not become a Steyn and be useless by being utterly predictable - then ana lasis becomes very, very easy.

P ast failures? To date Morné is the best bet for winning the World Cup. Lambie is the past failure and all your praise is going to heap you a mountain of egg. The England test was a horror show for poor Lambie, just splicing the clips together. I will say that Reinach got a bit better and did some very good things, but he was rattled throughout the first half. Neither of these two cope with physical pressure.

No side in the world (even the AB's) could win a WC with Morne Steyn at no 10...that you can be sure of.

This augument is too ridiculous for words...this augument is not really about Pat, you can include Handre as well...a breath of fresh air that brings life back into the game.

You guys remind me of an uncle who wouldn't part with his old Mercedes...his family used to complain...it was a beautiful old car but it was starting to cost him an arm and a leg...heavy on juice and repairs but the stubborn old man would not relent (sentimental). He thought it was indestructable and would go and on. Well sure enough it eventually ceased up...everybody breathed a sigh of relief...now at least the guy would get a sensible car but low and behold he got it fixed...the cost was nearly the price of a new car...this is symbolic to what sentimentalism does to rugby.

I said I'm fine with Pollard, so no sentiment at all. But Lambie is not an improvement on Morne, not even close. That's the point.
