The Boks biggest threat in the first two tests was their big powerful forwards on the charge - the likes of Alberts and Bismark created havoc.
What did Lancaster do, he instructed his players to cut our giants down at their source, thereby nullifying their previous threat.
The Poms literally threw themselves our big runners feet - the likes of Etzebeth, Potgieter and Bismark was felled in their tracks. It takes courage to execute, but the Poms stood up and put their bodies on the line.
Lancaster learnt quickly that their was no point in his charges taking the Boks on head on. Credit must go to Lancaster
Lancaster the master
Well lets see them doing it in a side containing coenie, bekker, Schalk, vermulen , Alberts and Frans steyn. They might last 20 minutes?
Meyer simply has to tell his guys to get their body position low into contact.
Well done to Meyer for sorting out these poms at short notice and with a severely depleted sqaud. Pom fans and sympathisers are making far to much of this draw in rainy condition. Lancaster et al can talk up their guys like the abs are talking up their Irish 3rd test win but not much can be drawn from these two games.
Realsim oaks realism please
Actually no, none of those players you mentioned would have made a difference, they too would have been felled in their tracks. The way to counter that is by the Boks changing tactics, plan B would have thrown the Poms.
Given the Pom side has very few real world beaters and the fact that we have so much talent at our disposal, I am a little disappointed we did not beat the Poms convincingly in all 3 tests........but that was never going to happen if Kirchner, Aplon, Jean, Olivier and Morne are regarded as the best we have to offer amongst the backs.
Meyer needs to wake up to the fact that these players are past their prime and we need to start utilizing the young stars we have out our disposal.
Lambie only started through injury, we need to be using Mvovo, JJ, Taute, Serfontein, Jantjies and Goosen with the likes of JP, Frans and Hougaard - its time to move on
snapster transitions are always tricky and those calling for younger players will ultimately be proven correct. However its the timing of these things that matters. That takes a bit of judgement.
Morne will go if his kicking continues like this. Jean probably has another season in him. Aplon is about done other than a Brent Russel type of impact player role perhaps. Kirchner is not really international class.
However there are as you say plenty of young guys - its how to bring them in that is the question.
What would be interesting to see an under 25 side playing the best SA can offer!
Bwaaaaahahahahaha....."Lancaster the master". Hell this guy is so brilliant some time he might even win a test......hahaha.....priceless.
Hahahahahahahha well said Moz an accurate summation. To think they too may have had Jake as a coach!!!!
One wonders when the poms will next beat the Boks. One sense this was their last chance for some time. Cant see the Boks being this bad again for yonks.
I don't see what's so good about Mvovo. He seems very ordinary.
Well Moz if you are happy with win margins of 5, 9 and a draw against an average group of Poms at home, then good for you.
I'm inclined to give Lancaster some credit. He curbed out rampaging forwards for a start. This man is a far better coach than Jake, they can be thankful they never inherited that pretender
Speaking to an old rugby player from Wales last night at our social fan get together and this is what he had to say about Springbok rugby.
NO FLAIR and same patten of play each season.
Whow... and he represented Wales in many test during their streak in the late 50's and early 60's.
Shocked, yep me too.
Nope your mate is spot on - we cant expect flair when you have Morne at 10, Olivier at 12 and Jean at 13 - it just aint going to happen. We can bleat on about playing to our traditional strengths but then we need to reconcile ourselves to staying at 3 in the world rankings.
Meyer is a man with vision and insight, he is bent on our traditional strengths pulling us through - we will go into the Championship with this memo and get exposed, he will then wake up to the fact that its time to change things and he will be forced into a rethink on obselete players like Morne
I'm happy with Jake because he won the RWC. You're happy with Lancaster because he managed one draw in three tests. I'd say I have higher standards.
Yeah good olf Jake won a WC but managed to lose to NZ 67% of the time and 75% of the time to France, not to mention 50% or Oz and Ireland.
The Bok side at home should have thumped this English side, we failed - Lancaster deserves some credit
Saff, I do agree to a degree, but it is only because the Boks had zero time to prepare for these tests that the Poms were able to run the games close. So while I expected us to do progressively better in games two and three, which we didn't, we still never lost a game. Still, credit must be given to Lancaster for keeping the Poms competative even after the Boks had had a bit of time together. As for the young talent being included in the team, I don't think it would do us any good to make whoelsale changes because that would mess up the team continuity. I'd say include the young truly special players (Serfontein, Goosen (When fit), Pollen, Small-Smith etc) in the squad, and possibly include them on the bench if they are needed due to injuries to more experienced players. We have seen many young players careers being ruined because they were pushed to the top too quickly. Expose them to Springbok rugby, and with time slowly incorporated them into the Sprinbok team.
