I have remarked a few times that great Boks show themselves early. Some greater than others, but truly special talent is evident early. I was then thinking of Roos, and have wondered how much he might follow the path of Thor, who had a very poor debut year in 2012. I am struggling to think of players who grew into great Boks over time. One might say Monty, but he was obviously a special player from the beginning. Teichmann was late getting into rugby, so I suppose he fits the description. Can anyone think of another instance of such a player?

Kwagga had a bad start to his international career. It took him about 15 games to settle into delivering test-level performances. Although his best games are usually off the bench as an impact player.
It does show good coaching credentials to stick with a player that is not performing for a long time.

You are correct that Kwagga was poor on debut against Wales. He was actually the least impactful player on the field (both teams) after film review, but he was actually very good thereafter. He was much like Wiese, not a popular Bok. He has actually been our best player for three seasons, and by far our most consistent player. However, Kolisi is the problem. The same Kolisi who ousted Louw due to pigment count. As per coaching credentials? I would argue the contrary. If there is something that can be extracted from a player, there has to be justification of that faith. As history shows, players who we give extended time to virtually always prove themselves unworthy. I cannot think of an exception.

Willemse struggled to get going, but look at him now.
