If you feel that I may have made a mistake with any of these choices then by all means feel free to correct me ... feel free to replace any one of them with one of your far better elderly players.

I look forward to your contribution.

CC

There are also players like Ivan van Zyl, Embrose Papier and Jackson to watch out for this year.   At the end of the Super 15 season there can even be more of those.

Do not expect anything bar bizarre comments from Mozart - he has no new ideas to offer about players and the glorious days of the team under his favourite coaches like Meyer,

Yes, Mike ... the above list of names were quickly put together. We have a lot of talent in the country.

I'm certain we'll be adding many of the unknown Bulls to our list of Bok potentials. Roelof Smit is one I'll be keeping my eye on. I hope he has an injury free season this year.

This is going to be a very important year for us.

Yep that’s pretty dumb.....the word that’s missing is team. Rugby is played by a team that adheres to a game plan. In 2015 by far our best shot at winning the RWC was to keep as much of the team that had been ranked second in the world, intact. That had beaten the ABs in 2014. Instead the fans howled for new blood and we got Jessie Kriel, Allende, Lomp......all of whom played major negative roles in the AB semi win......and, here’s the crucial thing, played no role in strengthening the team. We move on and many members of that team are past their sell by date. But not Willie, Bismarck, Frans, Schalk.....they could have assisted in a smooth transition and are still playing good rugby. But they were discarded. So we reinvent the team, the playing style, the leadership and crash from 2/3 in the world to 5/6 in the world. It’s the coach you say.....but actually Brendan Venter was the real coach of that team, a fan favourite. And these guys you list may, and I say may be better than the old players now. But there are only 3 proven test calibre players....Wilco who I spotted first on this Board, Marx and Etzebeth who was also championed by me. Pollard defintely was before his horrendous injuries. Players who WONTmake it in test rugby include Tank du Toit, Dreyer, Kwagga, both Kriels, Cloete, Cronje, Duvenage, Mapimpi, Vorster, Odendaal, Combrink, Andries Coetzee. They might have a decent game or two at SuperRugby but they wont make it in tests. All the older players did. Nobody is saying we can go back to the 2014 team. But we need a team. We are in same place we were in 2003 with Destroyli picking flavour of the day guys. Jake shut that down....made his picks based on the style he wanted to play and was loyal to that team.Voila....success! And ffs lets not have any more lists of guys who last year showed got us at one point to 7th in the world. Most of those guys are nice provincial players.

Most of your golden oldies were by 2014 not even provincial players so you are a good one to talk.

You can only talk of a team when their is a coach selecting and coaching a team and that was absent over the last decade.   WE know you could not see what happened under Meyer and you misjudged the whole situation when Coetzee was appointed initially supporting him until it was clear that he failed..   Only then did you start criticizing him.

So forget about the past and start looking at the present and the future.   The constant harping on what is wrong is stupid.   A person should rather look and suggest what can be done in 2018 ans 2019.

I seem to have rattled you. LOL!!!

Even though your post needs a lot of editing I think I get the gist of it all.

As expected, you've gone and done the usual 180 on us. No surprise there. Being backed into a corner will do that.

No matter ... you speak of a game plan. Which game plan are you referring to? The one that we all hoped would materialize but never did under your coach Meyer ... or the one that was never put together while Coetzee ruled the roost?

Either way, please bear in mind that we lost to Japan using the one while having a "team" of elderly folk ... and plummeted to 6/7th ... as well as lost to Italy, with a "team" of halfwits (none of which are on my list) while using the other non existent game plan.

The common denominator here is an incompetent coach as well as very poor selections.

Marx ... championed by you? Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaaa!!!

I thought you said you never lie? LOL!!! Boy oh boy ... that's a doozy!!

I clearly remember you had a lot to say about Marx not making it at test level? That he would never be much more than a solid super rugby player? I guess you've changed your mind on that too now, huh?

What role did Matfield play in that semi final loss to the All Blacks? Hmmmm ? His name must have slipped your mind, right?

Huh?? Who on my list contributed to our fall? Marx? Etzebeth? Du Toit?

Please tell me?

Well the positives of our little chat is that you've accepted that there are NO elderly folk out there that can improve our team. It's been slow going but at least there's a little progress here.

Gosh I edited my post 40 minutes ago....I guess you have been thinking long and hard about my posting. But drawn the wrong conclusions. Your views aren’t unique they are bog standrard....the belief system of any dumb fan eating up the propaganda What you don’t get is the team dynamic. But you should. Look at the Lions......one of the top three teams in Super rugby. And perhaps the best pure team. But take the players from that team Coetzee, Combrink, Skosan, Mapoe, Jantjies, Faf, Cronje, Dreyer, Kriel......all fail at test level. Marx and to some extent Whiteley succeed. It isn’t the players its the team.

LOL...very entertaining thread Mozart, CC and Mike....back to square one...nothing will ever change...the favourite players don't incidentally as our aged posters do not...their views are set in stone and their personalities are not compatible...they never will be.

Dear Ol' Maaikie probably knows the gist of the game and he has a devotion to the game more than anybody else here...he is indeed not always right but he has a lot of insight into players...Moses too has a long history into the game but he has a dislike for change and seems a conservative sentimentalist...he still harps on Matfield (who was a great 15 years ago) and Frans Steyn who was a promising player once but died a sudden death with crash ball coaching and because sometimes talented players in young never expand their talents because of conventional thought patterns and lack of initiative and indeed creativity. This is something I do not see in NZ...it happens in England too but Jones has changed a lot of this.

Bissie has had his day..Marx is on the shadowline on his career and many others such as Warren Whiteley... watch Robert Du Preez's sons too...out of the 3, 1 or perhaps 2 of them will write their names in history books of SA rugby if the admin and coaching improves.

Moses? He’s also got a view? Probably something along the lines of you shouldn’t covet your neighbour’s game plan. Definitely one of the 10 commandments of rugby.

This was the Bok team in 2014

15. Le Roux 14. Hendricks 13. Serfointain 12. De Villiars 11. Habana 10. Pollard 9. Houggard 8. Vermueluan 7. Mohjoe 6. M Coetzee 5. Matfield 4. Estebeth 3. The Beast 2. B Du Pleesi 1. J Du Pleesi

Bit of a mix of youth and expereience their. But as you say its team dynamics Mozart. I am not sure I agree with your notion it was youth that cost the semi. NZ side was pretty young their too with a mix of experience. Like the 2015 Bok side.

"It isn’t the players its the team."

That is right CC...the right context in what's the real problem...it's the coaching and game plan and the consequence that the teams are subjected to are the result of poor performances.

The facts are, and history has proven it... that an exceptional coach can turn a group of good players into an exceptional side. When good players become an exceptional side it's because they learn skills, and use them to knit and combine into an effective unit...rugby is not won with prima donna's but as a team of 15 men all doing their parts correctly, with all basic skills and intelligence and no room for errors.

There is very little wrong with the reservior of players available in SA. It is all there...

Everything is important but getting the priorities right in the right order is the most important of all...when coaching is right and the right team built and trained to work as a team then the results follow.

It's so simple and obvious but some still don't get it and go on and on...it's really so ridiculous.

Which of course is why we lose at age level, club level and international level......of course the players are part of the problem. For example the players determine the viable tactics. Without one player who would make either the Australian or NZ back divisions it kinda precludes taking those two teams on in a running contest. The delusions are amazing.

Haaaahahahahaaaa!!! It's true what you say, Sebastien. Going on and on and on is all he has left. He's a stuck record ... nothing new to add ... the same old rubbish ... everyday. He tells us that he's just setting the record straight. That cracked me up. He doesn't know his arse from his elbow and yet here he is setting the record straight. LOL!!

Makes me think of his "egg laying 101 counter ruck" lecture awhile back. Boy was that funny?

A team of good players can be taken to the next level by a good coach. He draws their full potential out and they become a team of superstars.

How about a team of elderly players? Those past their sell by dates? What if those very same elderly folks were coached by an incompetent coach? Would they lose to teams like ... Japan?

How about a team of substandard losers? Guys that can't even make their starting line up at provincial level? Like Paige and Kolisi at one time? Will a good coach turn them into world beaters? Hardly likely. What are the chances that a bad coach will have them plummet to 7th in the world and lose to teams like Italy?

Koos Kombuis is right. I didn't dumb it down far enough ... and sadly I don't know how to get it there. I don't think it'll help anyway. He's beyond even that.

Mozart has deluded himself into thinking that the old can compete with the young. Why you may ask. It's because he's having an old age life crisis and cannot accept that he's no longer the man he was. He's been trying to validate his existence with these wonderful stories. He uses exceptional men like Federer and passes them off as the ordinary man in the street. It makes him feel better and I guess he has the right to as much joy as he can get ... however deluded it may be.

Nothing more than a desperate fool ... living in the past.

You are a good one top talk about facts - you constantly write garbage  and then serve it up as "facts".    I would like op see a single posting of yours without distorted statements which you present as "facts"

I cannot see what is wrong with stopping constantly harping about the  past and start looking at the present objectively and look at performance of players.   Mozart condemns every single player - even those he never saw playing before - and what all other site members (bar him and  Ceradunce ) want to discuss is not the hasbeens of the past, but what is to happen in future.

That approach on their part leads to repetitiveness and boredom of members.

Werent your boys more successful Moz when they stuck to proper Bokkie rugby ? An enormous immovable [ if somewhat immobile ] forward pack backed up by long range snipers and the odd [ very odd for saffas ] opportunistic wingers ?

Yeah well that was back in 2009-2010 when the law variations suited their game. The Kick chase. Pretty sure the Bulls Backline in 2009 and 2010. Never saw the ball outside Morne. Since they changed the law variations. That suited a more expansive game. I Think SA has gone backwards. Their are better when they build their game around their big tight five. Accurate kicking. And deadly wingers.

Of course you are both right. We were more succesful with what was, under White, essentially the Irish/English game plan of today. Not surprising because Eddie helped craft that game plan. Now we have decided it doesn’t work while Ireland and the Poms flourish. There were differences between our style in 2007, which was in essence to use the rush defence to force turnovers and use Habana’s pace to cash in those turnovers....and 2009 where Morne’s accuracy with the boot, combined with Victor’s dominance of the lineout were the Bok difference In both cases the team knew the game plan....now it’s reinvented every week.
