Lineout steals

Not that I depend much on stats to paint me a picture but this I find very interesting.

It tells a story ... and explains why a light weight like Victor Matfield, who in truth wasn't exactly very effective in the tight-loose ... or even the scrum set piece ... made such a difference to every team he played for ... and I'm referring to him in his prime, Mozart.  

I've seen him tackled backward by smaller men ... I've seen him rucked over and stripped of possession ... I've seen him hog the ball in the backline in an attempt to play the hero ... I've seen him do much that would cause any coach to reconsider picking him for the next run on team ... but if you speak to his opposition you'll hear how they feared him, how they respected him and how highly they rated him as one of the best in the business.

He may not have had the body weight or the physical strength to be as effective as Bakkies Botha in the tight loose but that wasn't his role ... he made up for it and then some by dominating all comers in the line out. He was a specialist.

Who would have thought that this set piece was as important as it's made out to be by this article. Not me. I've always rated the breakdown as the key to a successful match.

This brings me to Franco Mostert, who made the most steals in this year's SR and with his incredible work rate should perhaps be receiving a lot more love from us than he currently is?

His contribution to the Lions has been immense ... more so than first thought.

Based on this article ... should he be the starting 5 lock? Is it possible that Quota Coetzee managed to get something right after all?

Now that is interesting.  

That is quite an interesting statistic! I doubt the percentage would be as high as that if those same statistics were extracted from a 100 or more games instead of just 20, but as a team coach this is certainly something worth investigating. 
I think to a large extent it comes down to the following. If a team gets a line out, especially as a result of a penalty, a large amount of time and planning will have gone into the resulting set play. If the move is disrupted by a line out steal, the transition from an attacking formation of players to a defensive one, will leave players out of their normal defensive positions obviously resulting in gaps in the defensive line. 
I still feel you are picking PSDT excessively, it is not as though Matfield or any other line out great never lost important line outs, but that does not take away from the fact that this is probably a very undervalued statistic.

This is the same repetitive junk we have to put up with every week from Mozart.  He starts a thread once every 14 days about Du Toit - h ence my question whether he is obsessed with the guy.  
This now has been going on for the past three years and I think it may be advisable not to encourage the idiot by commenting on it.

Moffie's obsessive hatred for Pieter-Steph is the foundation of just about every rugby-related post the doddering old fool ever makes.

 Was about to get involved but then got to end of BBs post and boom...thread is ruined yet again.

Back to the article. ‘Statistically significant’ says it’s beyond reasonable doubt that stolen lineouts are a factor in results. What we still have to ask is whether stolen lineouts are caused by some other underlying variable.....like a more physical pack for example. If that were the case though you would expect that variable to impact other factors they look at....like turnovers for example....and that those variables would also flash as statistically significant. The fact that they don’t is surprising.
