Lion Kings could join Super Rugby in 2014

Johan Ackermann is the favourite to coach the Lion Kings


Super Rugby's newcomers the Southern Kings could about to merge with the Lions for the 2014 Super Rugby season if reports are to be believed.

 

Golden Lions president Kevin de Klerk and Southern Kings boss Cheeky Watson have both denied that they are in talks to field a team that represents both regions but sources close to them say that the talks are taking place.

 

The Southern Kings are in last place in the South African Super Rugby standings and look set to play a series of promotion/relegation matches against the Lions later this month.

 

Whoever comes out as winner of the two matches will be entered in the 2014 Super Rugby season. However if the two teams agree to a merge they would both avoid relegation and guarantee at least some Super Rugby for their regions.

 

Rumour has it that the new Super Rugby team would be known as the Lion Kings and players would be pooled for the franchise.

 

The eight home matches would also be shared between the two Unions.

 

Current Southern Kings Director of Rugby has been linked with a position in Europe and a number of the Kings players have already announced that they are moving on.

 

According to the Cape Argus current Lions coach Johan Ackermann is the leading candidate to guide the Lion Kings.

the lion kings??? i actually like the sound of that and the promotions that could be done would be sick.

this article is a nothing article though, i would be shocked to find even one person who could think of this a very real option, though IMO its a great option.

but what kind of a team could u make with the lion kings??? o_O

The forward pack would be competitive against many team but the backline would still be one of the weakest, or probably still the weakest.

Sharkbok I do not agree with your comment on a joint backline and the backline not being up to standard. I rate Stokkies Hanekom highly and Hollenbach is to my mind better than the pedestrian Strauss. The Kings also have their extremely speedy youngsters on the wing, So it would be quite a useful backline they would be able to field, I am not so sure about the Stormers backline though 0 they have a good center pair in De Villiers and De Allende - but would Coetzee not prefer the under-par De Jongh at 13? And then there is Jantjies who failed miserably this year. As to the Sharks - I think they can field a good backline - but the Francois Steyn scenario will determine whether the backline would function efficiently. Steyn was part of a much wider problem this year - but an essential deficiency all the same. If he continues in present vein - the backline will remain dysfunctional. Maybe with Whitehead and Jordaan together the center problem will be solved. lso the Sharks could come short - unless
