Mapoe will be 33 when he starts for the Bulls, with Combrink 31. Both still have a few years left in them.

Maybe White prefers to recruit backline players that are older, so he does not have to coach them.
There have not been many new junior backline players combing through the Bulls Under21 system.

Combrink offers good utility value covering fullback, wing, and perhaps outside centre.
Mapoe is a specialist 13, who will not have the pace to cover wing.

Combrink is a cart horse. There were some on here who thought he should play for the Boks. Mapoe is a lot faster than Combrink, if Combrink can cover the wing so can Mapoe.

Both are way stale...much better backs around.

Mapoe is actually a very intelligent outside centre. You can't coach intellect into a player, and most of the new gen players are a lot less intelligent than the previous generation.

Kindergarten Imbecile

Nobody can show you anything - although Draad was very much to the point - because nobody is as blind as somebody who refuses to see.

Vermeulen should have won it twice already.

Combrink is one of the most reliable and clever players we've produced recently. Huge boot, great defender and seems incapable of making a wrong decision.

Not got oodles of pace but certainly on par with Willie's km/h . For me, Willie is brilliant tackler. Outside of that, Combribk is superior.

Hmm Combrink has not really done well abroad recently and neither has Mapoe.

Combrink got booted from his club and came back to SA to farm.

We are talking about 5 years back when Combrink was doing really well for the  lions, but that was  about as good you'l ever  see him.

Not sure if White can squeeze any value  out of these players, but that  said, look how well  Steyn  has done under white.

I think he just wants to some  experience to help his backline out.  There are a lot  of good youngsters around like Kriel and Arendse, but he will need to start  building his backline  with  some decent centeres and flyhalfs, but  the bulls are looking good at the moment

Potential Backline

9. Papier

10. Goosen

11. Madosh Tambwe

12. Cornal Hendriks

13. Mapoe

14 Combrink

15. David Kriel

But I still think the bulls would be better  if they could ever get back

Pollard,  Serfontein, Kriel
