Rabada, who I thought was sensational...what's the go with the kid?...has he dropped off the radar? Read something about him being part of the squad to tour NZ and OZ?
Local knowledge needed....
He is bowling really nicely for the Lions at the moment.
He is a part of the T20 squad to New Zealand (or was is Australia? Can't remember).
Bowls nicely between 130 and 140kph... but at 20 years old, he could increase is in the next year or 2.
Has great natural rhythm... nothing forced.
Maybe needs to up his aggression a bi t.
Bwhaaahaaaaa
Regarding Morkel... what hasn't he delivered?
Just trying to see your opinion here.
Are you referring more to ODI's or tests?
Chippo
Simply put I don't believe he's realized his full potential and to be brutally honest it's a bit too late. Morne to me is a gifted bowler, we all know about his ability to make the ball climb even off dull pitches and when I first set eyes on him I believed he had more talent than Dale. There is no reason why he should play second fiddle to Dale he could have been equally menacing and taken more wickets than Dale. A lot of him reminds me of Joel Garner but without the fear and awe Joel got from opposition batsmen.
Together he and Dale could have equaled the menacing partnership of Malcom Marshall and Joel Garner. Joel "Big Bird" Garner's stock ball was the one that aimed for just under the jaw, either that or the rib-cage and when he'd pushed the batsmen back long enough he'd follow up with a toe cruncher Yorker.Morne could easily have matched him, instead his bouncer harmlessly glide over the batsmen's head, batsmen don't fear him with the end result being that he takes a lot less wickets than he should.
Don't get me wrong, he is still useful and by all means he should be retained but also bear in mind that when Dale is down we don't have another bowler as effective as Dale.
Not sure if you were aware, but Morkel has better ODI stats than Dale.
Not sure why he should be replaced.
In tests, he, Dale and Vern offer 3 totally different options.
Rabada is more in the Vern mould.
I agree that he should be in the mix, but replacing Morkel would be preposterous.
Dont take credit away for the work he does in roughing batsmen up with his extra bounce.
With de Lange and Rabada in the wings, SA's bowling stock looks good.
Imagine being stupid enough to raise concerns about Morkel one of the best bowlers in the game......has been for some time.
Ignorance and stupidity of the highest order
Flash.....where do I say he should be replaced?
Secondly, the point I'm trying to make with regards to comparisons between Garner and Morkel is clearly lost on you...but re-read my post and tell me where I' ve said he should be replaced.
"I think Morne Morkel has had more than enough time to deliver" implies that he has not delivered as per expectation.
In context, it presides on the "another player I'd like to see given a run is Marchant De Lange" statement made by you.
So the way it read was that Morkel is not delivering as expected, so he should make way for Rabada or de Lange.
So ummm you chose to ignore this little bit ....
"Don't get me wrong, he is still useful and by all means he should be retained but also bear in mind that when Dale is down we don't have another bowler as effective as Dale."
My point was that I had higher expectations of him and I feel a little disappointed that he as a bowler did not get there but these are my expectations which doesn't detract from the fact that he is still a good bowler....but awesome?...no.
I don't suppose you saw Joel Garner....it would have helped if you did.
I think Rabada is being phased in slowly - he will definitely be in the squad for th shorter versions of the game as a regular soon - but maybe not for the WC in February.
I will put my hand up and admit that I only watched his innings last night.
Rabada was outstanding in the Uner 19 WC and I agree with you about him. He is being phased in and was playing on local level for the Highveld Lions in the shorter version of the game - ws vry good - but at times a bt expensive.
Howevr, he is an excellent prospect and you may see him in th forthcoming T20 games in Australia - where De Lange will also be in action. In the shorter versions of the game De Lange is bowling at a pace of between 140 and 150 kms and he improved a heck of a lot in accuracy. An occassional ball at a faster rate is causng havoc if accurate.
It would eb interesting to see how Rabade and De Lange shape upo in the 3 T20 games against Australia staring next week. It should be on Aussie TV - so you can have a watch on those two.
The T20 squad is as follows:-
JP Duminy (c), Kyle Abbott, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, Marchant de Lange, Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, David Wiese.
There seems to be a balance problem in the squad. There is only six batsmen in the team - the seventh one (Behardien) was poor in all recent games and one does not know what he is doing in the squad. The batting should have been strengthened by Delport and or De Bruin.
There are -
* three all-rounders in the squad;* 2 spin bowlers; and* 3 fast bowlers inthe squad.
The strating team will probably be made up of five batters, two allrounders, 1 spin bowler and three fast bowlers - taking into account the composition of the squad asa well as the pitch conditions normally found in Australia.
What the hell is that absolutely useless Behardien doing in the squad.....he has to be one of the worst international cricketers I have ever seen.
If he can play international cricket anyone can
Same can be asked of a string of Meyer's selections starting off with Bakkies, Morne, Gurthro, etc. Heaven only knows what hold these guys have on the selectors.
I'd much rather give Vaughn van Jaarsveld another go. I have always felt that he deserved a better chance at international cricket.
No one hits the ball cleaner than he does in SA.
His averages are ll higher than Millers, so why not give him another go.
He debuted against the Mighty Oz... in Oz and failed.
I feel though that the bouncy Oz wickets would suit him.
OR
Unearth some of our young guns. Abrahams, Second (from free state), Bavuma (lions), Vallie (WP), JJ Smuts (EP), or de Bruyn and Aiden Markram (Northerns).
We have some fabulous talent coming through, i say give am an opportunity to mix with their heroes and integrate with them.
Im a big advocate of exposing raw talent early on.
a. It gives them a sense of what they still need to do to succeed at the top
b. It opens them up to the expectations and demands of international cricket... the travels, the early rises, the cameras, the interviews etc etc... all of which i believe forms a critical part of a players career.
If he cant handle the off field attributes, he sure as hell aint gonna cope on it.
Talking of talent the best ODI and 7's batter in SA is Qwinron de Kock - he has massive talent.
I have a major problem with how he is being used. He opens the batting with an instrcution to hit out at anything - while hisopening partner Amla carries on and barely make 3 runs per over - sometimes less. To keep the partnership going at a reasonable rate De Kock must score at 6+ run per over against anew ball.
This may be in the teams interest - Amla scores big runs at a reasonable rate if he stays in for the first ten overs and that benefit the team as a whole - but it is not really in De Kock's interest. On Monday before the rain stopped play - Amla went out early and DE Kock had to bat reasonably to maintain the run rate and responsibly - so he ended up before the play was called off with 8o runs from 94 balls.
What i am trying to say is that Amla scored at a slightly faster rate - De Kock would bat longer and more effectively. A lot of people would differ from me on that score - but I still think that ODI players should maintain a rate of 4 rpo from the start and not fiddle around for 10 or more overs before they start bating at that rate.
There are a few youngsters that play in the shorter versions of the game - who are coming through well. Delport is one of the better ones - he plays for the Dolphins. Reminds me a lot of Pietersen - a bit of a rough diamond - but he can hit a ball miles.
However, the upcoming series against the Aussies would be interesting - we now have a better ODI side than ever before.
.
de Kock is not instructed to go and hit everything. I'm not sure where you get your intricate team meeting info from, but your source should be fired.
And what is a 7s batter?
I totally disagree with you Clever
I think they are perfect foils for each other.
Think Gibbs / Kirsten
Our best opening combo in ODI's.
They compliment each other.
Their stats ring great numbers.
Their combined strike rate is very good!
They have had plenty success. Just see Amla's average and de Kocks average for 2014... and look at our win loss ratio when they open.
PS: Here is his last 19 innings... opening with QDK. His strike rate is absolutly fine. I see 2 slow innings, perfectly acceptable at times when the innings requires .

Amla is as solid as a rock and has a calming influence about him, can't agree with you on that one, Mike.
On a separate issue, are there any good prospects as allrounders?......we're struggling in that department. Ryan McLaren doesn't inspire me, if we had a big hitter down the order then we'd have the complete package.
Flash
You mention Gibbs, I was a huge fan, there was a talent for you but sadly another case of the glass being half full in that he never went on to cement his place amongst the all-time greats.
I can use the same example with Morne Morkel...he could easily have been amongst that rare breed of greatness and that's what I've been alluding to earlier.
In saying that, we are blessed to have QdK and ABdV. 2 top order batsmen who do great glove work.
SO i guess they can be considered as all rounders too. It allows for us to play the extra bowler.
I do rate McLaren, just wish he got an extended run. His numbers read decent though.
Wayne Parnell just doesnt seem to be able to make that 10% improvement needed for him to become special.
Vern also has potential with the bat at 8 or 9.
Mate how can you judge a player on how many runs he scores in an over.
He may score 3 off 1 ball
He may score 3 off 6 balls
What substance does that comment have?
You should look at a players strike rate. Not how many runs he scores in an over.
In tst criclet strike rate is important - in ODI's and 20T - the rpo is as important or even more so. A player playing through an innings - like kallis did in the Pakistan series last year - making 50 runs from 90 balls - is th most certain reason for defeat.
We had heaps of players - startoing with Kepler Wessels - who made no difference between how they played test criclet compared to ODI's and ultimately we could never really win trophies at all.
Amla starts very slowly and have a rpo of less than 3 runs up to over 20-25 - he then start hitting out fairly late in innings and push up his rpo drastically. That is where he is for instance a better ODI player than most.
All i would like to see is that he stop fiddling around early in ODI's and start playing more positively - taking up his rpo to just about 4 runs per over. In the absence of that he puts his batting aprtners under serious pressure. to score runs faster and they lose their wickets a a result.
Mild criticism - just my opinion on the issue.

October 28, 2014, 05:57:46 Please - it seems I opened a can of worms here. I have nothing against Amla - but thinks he is batting too slow at the start of the innings. By over 10 he still he normally is below 3 runs per over and that picks up later in the innings when he reached an average of 5 runs or better per over. All I am saying is that slow batting at the rate Amla entertains early in his innings put pressure on DE Kock - who has to bat at a rate of 6+ an over to ensure that the batting rpo is not too low.
The only can of worms that you have opened, once again, is your understanding of ODI batting. You always need to have someone to anchor an innings. Did you watch the last one against NZ? Did you see what happened when Amla got out early? Did you notice that QdK immediately take over his (Amla's) role of being the anchor? Did you notice how quickly Qdk's run-rate dropped? And when ou Dawie's guy, Miller, also didn't produce (as expected) the run-rate (Qdk's included) dropped even further. They went from well over 5.5 po (IIRC) to just above 4 rpo in no time. It was only when AB came in and started chasing that the run-rate picked up again but until then QdK was biding his time and was batting very carefully.
mate you are making as much sense as you usually do.
RPO is a team stat
SR is a player stat
How are you comparing the 2?
