Well two years ago this guy was more popular than sliced bread. I could never see the attraction, but the barking dogs were howling in unison when he ran over some tiny USA and Scottish defenders at the WC. They never even got worked up when Kaino ran over him for a momentum changing try in the Semi. It's seems very possible that Lomp will start next to Etzebeth on Saturday....with Stephanie coming off the bench. I'm wondering how that will go down.

No way Lomp deserves to be in the squad, let alone start.

I have never been convinced that Lood was anything more than a Super Rugby player. When he won player of the year I thought maybe I had missed something and had it completely wrong. Two years on and it turns out I was not wrong, he is nothing but a lazy, slow, run of the mill player that still manages to look like an old tannie, even with a beard.

Come now, BlueBok ... you and the rest of the posters raved about this slack jawed misfit.

As far as I can remember it was only Mozart and myself that saw him for the useless entity that he is.

He's biggest fans were Comrade and Dave.

I ho pe he starts for the Goats. Rather bring the talented Du Toit on in the last 5 minutes where he can do no harm to the French.

I never raved about him CC. As I said, there was a time where I started to doubt myself, and gave him the benefit of the doubt, but I still didn't rave about him. But I must say, you and Mozter did have it right from the get go.

Mozart getting it right when it comes to players?  Impossible since he des not consider performance as a key for player evaluation.   That being he case - he supported Morne Steyn, Fat Fransie, Alberts and Matfield  and his ideas about player selection is warped beyond imagination.
De Jager was not performing well enough in 2016 and was whether he likes it or not performing better than the dweeps he supported as locks for the Bulls.   However, he is a better selection than the players he supported in the past.   So best advice - when it comes to player performance it is safe to stay away from Mozart co ntributions.

Mike, what does all that have to do with the conversation? I clearly remember Moz being against the hype surrounding Lood from the start. What he said about Steyn etc has nothing to do with this thread.

I for one was ahainst the hype around Etzabeth when he emerged, but due to the fact that there was no one else at that stage, he played and now he is the bok starter. I'm not nearly sold on either Lood or PSDT, but not comvinced they're no good either. PSDT is a great bench option, but syarter? Not with the lightweights we tend to pick in the backrow of late. We need to give them a solid run. I would like to see the boks play a backup for Eben on the bench, but instead of the bench being a tool to build the squad, it's being used to make the quota numbers look better. We tend to rely too much on settled players and play them into the ground as a result. IMO the quota has become an excuse for poor selections...as a few posters remarked, quite a few white players were bad last year. I really hope AC gets things right this year...by hook or by crook, cause it won't be another way.

Mozart got a few calls wrong ... in my opinion ... but Lomp isn't one of them.

He also pegged Jesse Kriel ... a favourite of yours, Comrade  ... as well as De Allende and Kolisi ... both Bok musts in your opinion.

Apart from all the repetitive nonsense we've been listening to about, Alberts, Morne and Victor these last 5 years ... who have you pegged as useless ... in fact, who have you pegged as worthy of the Green and Gold??

Anyone??

I was one of the first LeadH ead critics, perhaps the first. To me, he just looks like he is a bit of slow fat brawn- with limited brain capacity.
This is one of the older Lomp threads, Lomp the Primate   Which one is smarter?

Quality player playing in a side reduced to rubble by a coach who thought rotation was the way forward and by the time he woke up to this fact the damage had been done...............classic case of a side playing with zero confidence much like the Boks under Coetzee

Lomp is a weed. He has no upper body strength and because of it is easily defeated out wide.

His best bet is to pick on the smaller players ... use his weight advantage against them  ... and when he does all the ignorant fools like Comrade rave about his "skill s" ...

LOL!!

Moz my call is that the AB's will win 3-0 and they wont beat the Saders

Tomorrows game is a big one for them - playing the weakest Kiwi side in the Blues who are anything but weak, strengthened by SBW at 12, is going to be tour defining.

If they struggle against the Blues, they will start doubting themselves and no doubt the Lions test side will get their first run against the Saders and I just cant see them living with a cohesive side that is yet to lose this season.

Its a handy Lions squad but the Kiwi's are on another level

CC I disagree 100% - Lood proved his worth years ago.......stick him in the Lions set up and he would thrive as would the majority of our talent.

It is amazing what Ackerman and Swys have created at the Lions

I'm looking forward to seeing what Ackers does with Gloucestershire in a season or two - no doubt it will be filled with Lions players by then!!

For me Lood has always been a pretender on the big stage. I offered him the benefit of the doubt 3 or 4 years ago when Barrett made him look like a toy doll. Simply tackled to touch when the game was there for us to win.
Never lived up to the hype when the pressure is on.

BoKBF you will find two players pushed him into touch and to define a player based on that is pretty short sighted

You don't win player of the year being a weak average player

Lood was simply fantastic in the WC.......by far the best lock in that tournament

Indeed CC. Everybody gets calls wrong. It's what humans do.
Mike is starting to lose it though. Despite what Mike says, Moz has not stuck to his guns simply for the sake of stubbornness. He HAS changed his opinion when the facts have changed. To me that's being rational.
Mike I think everybody here likes you, including me. Let's try to have banter AND common sense. Since it is possible for both to exist simultaneously.
PS Lomp looks like the big cry baby who had his mom feed him Nesquick through the school fence.

If you're right Dave that's going to be a huge knock for NH rugby. Ireland had a genuine victory over the ABs in Chicago, and the assumption was the Lions could build on that. They were remarkably off the pace last weekend though.

As much as the British media will destroy the Lions if they come home 3-0, the fact remains you could probably put together a world XV of the best non-NZ players and they'd still lose to this AB team.

The gap is huge right now.

That Ireland victory whilst mighty impressive seemed like a genuine one-off off day for the ABs.

Moz, tx for ignoring him.
As for my thoughts on Frans?........I don't believe he's good for the future of Bok rugby, it's time to move on with our best home grown.

I agree we need to move on....but Stepfontein and Kriel are our only squad centre options with Mapoe and Allende injured. And these two Bools are duds at Super level.

We have already seen them both (Serfontein and Kriel) fail at test level ... and yet there they are again.

Puzzling.

They say the height of stupidity is to do the same thing over and over again and to actually expect a different result.

I guess Coetzee sees it differently.

Serfontein is a lost cause in my opinion, but for me Kriel still has the ability to finish well and enough x-factor to create something out of nothing. Please guys, try to remember who has been coaching Kriel these past few years. Marais and Coetzee! Seriously, which back line player is going to flourish under their guidance? I know kriel has some weaknesses like his defense, but those things can be remedied. Give him a season under Mitchell, if he still doesn't deliver, then fine, send him out to pasture.

I look forward to Mitch's entrance. The poor Bulls players don't know what they're in for.

This could very well be the turning point for the Bulls.

Hope so any way.

You lot have it so wrong regarding Kriel and Serfontein - reality is both have stood out for the Bulls this season despite the Bulls being so poor.

Its all about the environment the players play in - look no further than the Lions as evidence of this - most of the Lions look better players than their counterparts at the other unions when in fact they are not.

At centre the likes of Janse van Rensburg, Mapoe and Vorster have thrived in a winning environment where they are granted the freedom to express themselves playing most of their rugby on the front foot.

Put the likes of Kriel, Odendaal, Serfontein, de Allende, EW Viljoen etc in the Lions side and you would see the same.

de Allende and Kriel were simply awesome in their debut season at test level, making Nonu and Smith look like pretenders. They were playing off natural ability and talent which soon got supressed under Meyers robotic style and has hardly found favour under useless Coetzee

You guys fail to see the real picture.......hell even a prop like v/Rooyen looks good for the Lions and the utterly useless Cronje is now a strong possible starter at 9 for the Boks thanks to looking above average for the Lions - open your eyes lads
