Looking back...

Well in all honesty, Os was no great shakes when he returned......he was a shadow of himself as a player.......he was solid at best.......did a Bakkies role on the EOYT.......my guess is that there was a better youngster at the time.

Same applies to Monty......he brought nothing other than a steady boot........he offered nothing with ball in hand and was never great under the high ball or in the tackle.

Again, my guess is that there were better fullbacks about, but Monty did a job with the boot. We did not win the WC because of Os and Monty

Right now, we have better youngsters than the old players Meyer is recalling........at least I can name them.......but I can't when it comes to Jake's side as its too many years back.

 Meyer is starting to get it right, it's not so much the journey in which these better decisions came by that is the be all and end all (Supposed selection of Willie Le Roux only because of Kirchner's injury). All that matters now is that he continually selects these players, if you're one that dislikes his selection of Albert's I can try and reassure you with the fact that he was starting Arno Botha when the latter was fit. 
But then again I am a fan of Meyer and you can argue against my opinion. 

 Saffex, do yourself a favour and read John Smit's book and you will understand what Os brought to that team. One incident described in the book was this.

Henning Gericke one day had the RWC squad sit in a circle and placed a Bok jersey in the centre. He told the players to turns in sitting down next to the jersey, touch it and explain what it meant to him. Each of them had their turn and each of them  had something to say. When it was Os' turn he knelt down and put his hand on the Bok and bowed his head without saying anything. John couldn't understand. Didn't he have something to say, or what? John then noticed that the big guy couldn't talk. He was crying and couldn't get a word out.

I have read it and while I have no doubt that it meant the world for Os to play, reality was that he was at best solid.........we never saw any of his trademark runs or big hits......because the big man was past it........much like Fourie, Steenkamp, Bakkies and Matfield are past it
