Ex Supersport

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke hailed the influence of Morne Steyn following their narrow 18-16 Vodacom Super Rugby victory over the Sharks in Durban on Saturday night.

The veteran Springbok flyhalf kicked all the points, including the decisive penalty five minutes from time, as the visitors maintained their grip on the South African Conference standings and effectively knocked the hosts out of the competition.

He's been brilliant this season,” Ludeke said after the win.

“He's definitely a game breaker, which is what you need…at the end of a game, pressure kick, the guy's got the mental ability to slot it over." (Mike injudiciously tried to make a comeback by saying Steyn looked nervy)

The form of Steyn, 28, has widely been seen as a key reason for the Bulls' upturn in fortune this season, following a difficult 2012 when he lost his place in the Springbok side to Saturday's opposing number 10, Patrick Lambie.

Asked what had been different this season, Ludeke said: “It's hard to say, he's always worked hard, it's never been a lack of effort or commitment.

“He's technically very sound. Sometimes I suppose you need to go through a patch to come back to your best.

“We're all glad for him. It's amazing to see him work, he's got an amazing work ethic.”

In a tight affair at Kings Park, the Bulls had lead narrowly for most of the way, but appeared to have thrown it away eight minutes from the end when Charl McLeod scored the only try of the game.

Lambie, who landed 11 points in total, added the conversion to give the home side a one-point lead, before the Pretoria side immediately won back the penalty which sealed the win.

“That's the funny thing about the game, you can be in control and it can slip away in one moment,” Ludeke said.

“They played well, they kept us under pressure, didn't allow us to get out of our half, especially from the scrum.

“But our maul worked for us and Morne, under pressure, kicked that kick.

“So it was three big moments – they scored to go ahead, we forced that attacking line-out, our maul worked for us and Morne slotted the kick for us. Those of the type of things you need to win, the big moments.”

Victory moved the Bulls level on 50 points with the second-placed Brumbies at the summit and top of the domestic standings, while the loss meant the Sharks' slim hopes of making the playoffs were now over.

It was the Sharks' sixth loss in seven games and coach John Plumtree lamented the missed opportunities after they had threatened on several occasions to come out with a win.

“We had plenty of opportunities to win that game, but we just didn't take them,” he said. “We coughed up ball at important times, which has happened far too many times this season, so it was disappointing.

“We could have won that game which would have put us in the reckoning for the playoffs, but it wasn't meant to be.”

On the rugby played the sharks, sans a number of players, were the better side.

End of story.

Lord Beeno

I am just not sure about Steyn.  The same was said by Meyer and Ludeke about Steyn in June 2012 - and then his collapse in tests followed.   And if you watch his facial expressions and his body language - there was some indications to my mind that he may be getting nervous and insecure - irrespective of what Ludeke says.

I may be totally wrong on this and hope I indeed am so - but Morne is some-one to be watched with care after the debacle involving him last year.

Mike Ihope you are wrong as Morne's dip in form with his goalkincking cost us the world numer 1 ranking and the rugby Championhip.

Ludeke plays the guy every match - is that really necessary?

Mike, Steyn has his weaknesses, but when it comes to tests, he has what it takes. He may not be the best running no.10 in the world, but how often are test matches open running affairs? Not very often at all, especially not against top opposition. Also, who would you have in his place? Lambie? Seriously, what has he done this year to warrant his inclusion ahead of Steyn? Jantjes? He had a good game this weekend for the Stormers, but as has been the case his whole career, he has been inconsistent and will not be reliable enough for the Boks. Katrakilis, has done well in a weak team, but is just nowhere near good enough. Francis or Watts from the Cheetahs, no need to explain further. The point is Steyn is very reliable in the areas that are prominent in tests. Kicking out of hand, kicking at goal and tactical play. Also, his defence has improved substantially. Please bear in mind that he is playing according to a game plan given to him by his coach. When the Bulls have played a more expansive game plan he has been able to distribute and run adequately. He is not the best no.10 in the world in these areas, but he is good enough. If Goosen were not out injured, I'd have him starting for the Boks, but with him out, Steyn is well ahead of anyone else.

Bluebok Steyn is currently our number 1 flyhalf. Then its between Lambie and Cat. Jantjies is way too inconsistent to be considered.

Hopefully Goosen comes back with a bang next year as Morne is leaving I understand.

By the way I saw a comment suggesting Chilli Boy was off overseas?

bluebok

I have no problem with Steyn - but 2012 he turned bad and all the attributes you rightfully credit him with went out of the window.   He was Meyer's top idea of how the game should be played - but his goalkicking and strategic kicking became a farce.   My only worry is that there may be a repeat.   If it does happen - he should NOT be in the Rugby Championship at all.   That is why it is necessary to keep a sharp lookout for what he does in tests in June - albeit against weak opposition.

Mike, I hear you man, but there is a big difference between this year and last year. Last year Steyn was already playing badly during the Super Rugby tournament, and it was obvious, to most of us anyway, that he was experiencing a huge dip in form. As a result, he should never have been included in the Springbok setup, purely because he was so badly out of form. That is not the case this year. He has played well all season, and has obviously worked hard to rectify the problems he was having last year. Beans, as for Chilli, I have not heard any reports about him leaving, but based on how this year has panned out, I think he has realized that he has been comprehensively outplayed by Strauss, and if Bizmark recovers from injury he probably won't be playing for the Boks. So ja, at this stage in his career, a move overseas chasing the dollar bills, would not be a terrible idea. From his point of view anyway. The Bulls will definitely miss him though.

Morne Steyn had a bad patch of about 5-6 months out of an entire excellent career of 10 years at the Bulls, and Mike is concerned that he might struggle again.....................

Windpomp the reason Morne had a dip was that he was badly overplayed over a long period of continuous rugby. Bulle are playing him every match. I sincerely hope he doesnt crack up. Fouche looks a good one so why not give him a shot at times.
