Tightheads really struggle in a laid out position. Both Malherbe and Dreyer are stretched out with their feet well behind their hips. This leads to scrum collapses and constant resets.....and in that circumstance your fate is in how the ref sees it. Time to move on. Wilco is a big unit that deals very well with the vertical stresses, and is far more correct in his positions.....let’s do the obvious and move on.

So after destroying a legitimate rugby string you chicken out.......and this string is spot on. Here’s a writers perspective on a struggling Malherbe during the Irish series:
..
‘However, the penalty did arrive on the next scrum, and there can’t be many arguments with the decision. Funnily enough though, the penalty comes in spite of Malherbe.
He gets himself in a terrible position initially, and just about stays up in time to allow Mtawarira drive through Ross and win the decision.
If we look at the two packs as the scrum sets, we can see that Malherbe completely misjudges his footwork, and his right foot isn’t even on the ground as he and McGrath come together.
2 malherbe feet
Freezing it at the exact moment, we can see how his toe is barely grazing the grass, with absolutely no weight coming down on his foot. With his footwork so poor, he’s completely off balance immediately.
2 malherbe engage
He becomes desperate, and has to overextend his legs to stay up. As we can see below, his knee is actually on the ground, before the ball even comes in. But crucially, while his knee is touching the ground, he somehow manages to get his feet in place, which keeps the scrum up.
2 malherbe knee
If that right foot had slipped when his knee dropped, he would have been all but certain to have been penalised. However, with Mtawarira on the other side, all Malherbe has to do is keep his side upright, and the Beast can do the rest.’
.....
Exactly what we see in Dreyer stretched out with straight legs, falling inwards and ultimately flat on his face. We need to forget about him.

Moz, although I agree with you on Malherbe's scrimmaging, he hasn't played in ages. I looks like you started this thread to bait Maaik.

Howe m any penalties did Malherbe give away - I know for a fact that he - unlike Jannie du Plessis against Argentina in 2014 - never went back at jet speed when scrumming.

Oh come now ... how many times have we not seen Malherbe stretched out flat
on his belly? How many times have we not complained about his high penalty count? How many times have we not said that he's not test material?
Both he and Dreyer suffer from the same issue. It has nothing to do with power ... everything to do with poor technique. Why their respective coaches haven't managed to sort this out is beyond me. Either way ... they aren't suited to test rugby.
Besides ... Mike froths at the mere mention of Stipid's name. Test it out for yourselves if you don't believe me. If you ever run into Mike on the street just yell out .. "STIPID" ... and watch him froth.
Can any of you remember a positive response from Mike to any of Stipid's posts or threads? Feel free to point me to one. Just one.
Mike has allowed Stipid to get under his skin. Mike feels aggrieved. He wants payback. He feels beaten to the punch and has allowed his emotions to take over. The content of Stipid's posts is irrelevant.
The best thing is for these two grumpy old men to lace up a pair of boxing gloves and go at it. Mike will try to unleash his pent up rage on Stipid ... much like Jake La Motta tried on the fleet footed Sugar Ray Robinson.
I would pay good money to see them go at it.

Dreyer is an utter test failure. The man is a walking penalty. Malherbe is much the same. Neither should ever again don a Bok jersey! I don't care who they bring in to replace them, because that person could barely do any worse.

I do not think that Malherbe is really a failure so I differ from you here. Redelinguys is to my mind the top Tighthead if he ever play rugby again. We will have to wait and see what happens next in Super Rugby.

So far Louw looks up to the task.
It took an injury to force our stupid coache's hand. Having said that he'll probably drop him and bring Hamburger Nyakane back to the tighthead side.

Nyakane cannot scrum to save his life - whether at Tight head or loose head.

Allow me to put the record straight. Dreyer is not in the same league as Malherbe as a scrummager flaws or no flaws.I recall wee cc saying Dreyer was a strong scrummager. Hahahahhahahahahaha
10 Oct 2017, 10:42#17
Malherbe is a belly flopping lard-ass ... Dreyer is a powerful scrummager with flaws in his technique.
See the difference?

They are the same scrummager.....laid out position, turned inside at the first sign of pressure, a desperate attempt to stay upright......and then schplottttt, the belly flop. The only difference is Malherbe is fatter, so less likely to be involved in general play.

Dryer is your pick. You seem to be his only fan, like your one and only lonely braincell.
Hougaard is one of your picks- which change by the week. A fanboy one week- only to be discarded to make a place for your new Curry Cup star.
10 Oct 2017, 16:29#22
I'm not the one who rated him as an impact superstar, SharkSh!t. You did.
The less you say about anything rugby related the better. Haven't you learnt that yet?

Scrumming is pe nalized when inadequate. And when scrums go down and there is no penalty then both props are to be blamed, However when it do4es not go down and inlu foes backwards it is a major problem of inadequate props.
Malherbe has a low penalty count and that indicates he is mot as bad as he is made out to be.
