At some point a player's propensity to get hurt has to factor into their selection. The Boks have persisted with Malherbe for a few seasons now with nothing to show for it.....he has been injured much of the time and when he has struggled has been excused because he is just getting back from injury. It's sad for him, but it's time to give Wilco a shot, Dreyer is not the andwer:

Lions prop Ruan Dreyer has been called up to the Springbok squad to replace Frans Malherbe, who is set to miss the entire Rugby Championship due to a neck injury.
'Dreyer's recall to the Test squad comes after the Springboks received confirmation that Malherbe is unlikely to take any part in the Championship. The Stormers prop underwent scans on Monday afternoon in Port Elizabeth to determine the severity of the injury after complaining about stiffness in his neck.
'Frans consulted a neurosurgeon in PE, who suggested extended rest for the player, with follow up scans to be done in two weeks’ time,' Bok team doctor Konrad von Hagen commented.
Von Hagen also confirmed that Warren Whiteley had undergone surgery on Friday, with the regular Bok captain likely to be facing a race against time to feature in the latter stages of the Rugby Championship.
'Warren underwent an operation on Friday and he is feeling a lot better already. He is positive that the operation will be a success,' said Von Hagen'
