SIMON BORCHARDT (of keo) says the Cheetahs and the Lions should play as the Cats again from 2013 to accommodate the Kings.

With Sanzar CEO Greg Peters having made it crystal clear that Super Rugby cannot be expanded to include a sixth South African franchise until the end of 2015 (when the current broadcast deal expires), Saru has to find a way to fit six franchises into five spots.

Saru’s executive council has already voted to include the Kings from 2013, so their place in next year’s tournament is no longer up for debate. They will be there. (Not sure about that- was there not a condition that none o fthe existing franchises would be prejuduced?)

This means that Saru either has to relegate one of the current five franchises (probably the Lions, who are last in the SA conference) or create a merger.

The latter option makes the most sense to me as no region would miss out on Super Rugby. In my opinion, South Africa’s two worst-performing franchises in Super Rugby over the past 17 years, the Cheetahs and the Lions, should play as the Cats again from 2013 (having done so from 1998 to 2005), with four league matches being played at Ellis Park and four at the Free State Stadium. (What makes sense it that the queens stay playing vodacom rugby and try to make the Currie cup!!!!!!!!!)

It would be up to the franchise to decide who coaches the Cats. In a perfect world, you’d want both John Mitchell and Naka Drotske on the coaching team, but there’d almost certainly be a clash of egos and understandably so. Picking one of them to be head coach of the Cats at the other’s expense would obviously also create problems in the squad as one group of players would be favoured by a coach who knows them well.

The best way forward would be to appoint a head coach who has no ties to either union or loyalties to either group of players. Someone who would simply pick the best team possible. Someone with a strong personality who would be able to stamp out any discord in the squad and get the players working together.

To me, the obvious candidate to coach a Cats team would be Nick Mallett, who is currently unemployed having been overlooked by England (a decision the RFU may soon come to regret). Mallett is highly respected in South African rugby and if anyone can make the Cats marriage work (as Laurie Mains managed to do in 2001 when the Cats reached the Super 12 semi-finals) it’s him.

In Monday’s Business Day newspaper, when asked about a possible Cats merger, Mitchell was quoted as saying that it ‘could be effective with a strong leader involved.’

He’s right. And that leader should be Mallett.

All three are fine coaches and it would be unfortunate if eithr Naka or Mitchell lost their jobs.

Perhaps one of them could come to WP and take over from Alistair. Frankly I am a bit pessimistic of our longer term prospects. I believe Rassie gave us an enormous boost but moved on as he couldn't take the twits running WP rugby. Much like Mallet before him. WP need a clean up at the top.

Alistair and his coaches are simply living off what Rassie produced. They do not have the ability to keep us in front. WP is not professionally run. It also doesnt not earn the type of money the bulle do which is ludicrous given thier location and very faithful fan base.

But the issue here is the reforming of the Cats and, if that happens, who should be their coach. Hard choice indeed as naka has performed wonders and Mitchell is a fine coach.  Mallet has hug eexpereince andcouldbring innovative ideas t othe table. Maybe it is Mallet.

But the Kings cannot even win the Vodacom cup?  What a lot of politicking and back stabbing and then some greasing of palms etc.  and remember that Cheeky Twatson promised an all BLACK team to be presented in 2013.  Where will he get these players?  Buy all the good to fair POC from other unions?  I have not seen any involvement by the Kings to develop some black talent to be used in their campaign next year.

Lunatic this has the makings of a great tragie comedy! One honestly wonders how they can carry on with this "plan".

Its a plan made in heaven for ou sitting bull - what will he say when the Chiefies pull off a 100 - 0 win against the queens

 @Beeno1

That is what you get when you mix politics and sport - with the politicians with airheads calling the shots and some silly little twat-son waiting in the wings to make some extra cash on the gravy train.  You're correct, one does not know if you must laugh or cry.

 @beeno1
I totally agree with you a merger will is the best option we have at this stage. They can only do better as the CATS.

Kind regards,

They are F'ing up our rugga landscape for their own genial yet self centered reasons.

Cheeky... mate.. thanks for your help in the Apartheid era... but now you can fuck off. You are waay to extreme boet. Plus you gave birth to a twit who would be better off on a deserted island where his banter will go unnoticed.

As for the Cats... Do mee a favour!

It didnt work 5 years ago... it wont work now.

The Cheetahs are on to a good thing! WHy screw it up.

THe Lions are also not too far from being a mid tabl side. Give them hald of their 16 injured players back and youll see.

Anyway TheRugbyFactory.com.. please mate! Sort your website out and dont send us all your email address.

Fielding an all black side, or the "All non whites" is a contradiction. The maui rugby were not allowed to tour South Africa due to a team choosen on race. If their are any people or players who want a non white team, let them play for the Queens with Puke as captain and Lucky as coach.

Agreed, if the useless Kings have to be included then lets bring back the Cats with a combo of Drotske and Mitchell as coaches.

The Cats could have a hell of a side:

15. Ulrich Beyers

14. Mapoe

13. Taute

12. Jan Serfontein

11. Willie le Roux

10. Goosen

9. v/Zyl

1. Marcel v/d Merwe

2. A.Strauss

3. Coenie

4. Paul Willemse

5. Ruan Botha

6. Brussouw

7. v/d Walt

8. J.Strauss

Have taken Beyers and Serfontein from the Bulls on loan, as the Lions and Cheetahs have no 12 or 15 of note

@beeno1: I agree with you 100%. SARU could have handled this fiasco much better. It would have been much more fair if they played a promotion-relegation match to see who should stay and who should go.

@Chippo: Aren't you a bundle of joy!? Any constructive criticism to make our site better?  We are trying to better our beloved game of rugby in South-Africa by creating a platform for youngsters to further themselves in the great game.

P.S Some spelling classes maybe? I know a good primary school teacher. hehe

Exactly so Rugby Factory. Its this back door approach that has folk riled. Get there by earning it and they would have my full support.

Chippo dont feel threatened by folk like Rugby Factory. This board is strong with same very fine posters and will grow and grow. Nice when rugby folk pop in and say hi.

Good luck Rugby Factory hope you churn out some real winners and send them to the Mighty Stormers.
