How can anyone say that he is a good coach?

  • He has a terrible win / loss ratio as Bok coach.
  • Only a shit coach could possibly go on a 17 match winning streak.
  • Only a shit coach is allowed to have an opinion (and voice it)
  • Only a shit coach can explore new tactics and veer aaway from skop skit and donner rugby.

What a crap coach he is....

Off with his head!!

Choppo, I'm with you on this one but I'm not sure some of the Mallett-bashers are going to pick up on your sarcasm.

Far too many people pointing to Mallett's "post-streak" record or his Italian results and forgetting that he didn't just make us the dominant power in world rugby in 1998 when we smashed everyone (and I mean everyone!) whether it was home or away, he achieved those results playing a ball-in-hand strategy with the Springboks playing some of the most attractive rugby in their long and illustrious history.

The 1998 Springboks under Mallett were far and away the best Springbok side of the modern era and they're up there with the Bok teams of 1937 and 1951/2 as one of the greatest Springbok teams of all time.

I'd take Mallett in a heartbeat, for the Sharks or the Springboks.

He seems adamant not to be a part of South African rugby again.

Great loss.

Awesome coach!!!

Can't say I blame him.

Yep and he split the Bok squad by dropping Teichman. Started losing serially in the 99 TN. Then when the RWC arrived his big idea was the drop kick. Beat the Poms with drop kicks in the QF and then used exactly the same tactics against Oz the following week, even though the playbook was there to see. And having lost the RWC with what RooiAAS calls our best team since 37.....then proceeds to tell us we can't compete against Polynesian backs. After that he compiles a shocking record of losses. Sure, why wouldn't I want more of that.

Moz, i'm losing a lot of respect for your opinions lately. You talk so much crap.

When i take my morning dump and catch up on the forum via my ipad, its hard to differentiate between my stool being excreted from my ass and the crap i'm seeing you post on here.

Please, you appeared to be intellegent in the past, what has happened?

Regarding Mallett's 3 game losing streak... you need to compare apples with apples.

I mean the AB side was littered with some of the best backline players of all time!

...let me ask you this... When Jake's team of 07' went down to a record margin in Oz.... did that make him a shit coach?

Or do we look at the overall pictire down the line?

Both Mallett and White have very similar win / loss ratios. So please my friend, don't make emotional judgements.

Look at the type of rugga we played when Mallet was coach.

We didn't have the BEST team on paper, but we smashed most of our opponents with amazing all round rugby.

The only negative i have about Mallett, was his dropping of teich. But overall, he has a great rugby brain!

No worries Chipo I still have my PhD, you can enjoy your bowel movements without concern . The point is Mallett won a single game in four TN tests in 99 and a single game in 5 TN tests in 2000. And Jake won his RWC, Mallett lost his. The streak started before Mallett with a massive performance against Oz. He gradually destroyed that spirit, to the point where we were patsies. No thanks.

What has Mallett achieved? WTF does attracktive rugby help you if it brings you nothing? I would be happy if Mallett never gets near the Boksor any SA team again. OK, maybe the Stormers/WP can have him. LOL

OMG...

Ok you 2 win.

I actually can't discuss this with 2 people who can't see beyond their noses.

@Cera... what did he achieve, you ask? How does a winning streak of 17 tests sound?

@Moz... Just goes to show, even a moron can get somewhere in life with perseverence. Great news on your PhD!

Listen you poor dope. The first match in the winning streak was a 61 to 22 drubbing of Oz under du Plessis as coach. After that we played a magnificent game against France under Mallett, but still playing du Plessis rugby. By the TN of 98 we had reverted to basically crash ball rugby, with Honibal and Muller crashing it up big time. There was no great Mallett attacking revolution. And in the RWC we were actually booed at Twickenham (I was there) for our stodgy tactics and predictable drop kicking. This whole thing is a figment of your manipulated imagination.

What's this "we", Mozart??

Speak for yourself.

I would have Mallet back in the blink of an eye. Especially as Bok coach. We wouldn't see stupid selections like HouGat or Kirchner, Kruger or Spies, Aplon or De Jongh etc.

The man's a professional ... he lives and breaths rugby.  That is his passion.

He doesn’t enter the fray to win a popularity contest. It doesn't bug him whether he's liked or not. He’s there to do a job and I know no-one that can match him. Including Jake White.

We both know why your anti Mallet ... it has nothing to do with Mallet, does it??

To clear up some misconceptions

"and (Boks) were finally knocked out of the championship in the semi-final by eventual winners Australia. Despite his team's poor shape in 1999 (Relatively poor talent pool at tha tpoint in time in my opionon) they still managed to break more records, beating Italy 101–0 and England in the quarter-final 44–21, with Jannie de Beer kicking a world-record five drop goals in that game. So Mallet lost to the the side who won the WC when Larkham (Did h eever kick any other drop goals?)nailed a drop goal from near the half way line in the driving rain!!  That makes Mallet a poor coach?   Or how about his record in France Mallett moved back to France as coach for the Paris club Stade Français, which he led to two consecutive French domestic title wins in 2003 and 2004 before returning to South Africa where he accepted the job of Director of Rugby at Western Province. Initially there was speculation[citation needed] that he might coach the Springbok team again, but those rumours were quashed by the appointment of Jake White as the new South African coach.   In spite of his team's poor performance and the internal strife that characterised his final years as coach, Mallett remains one of South Africa's most successful coaches ever, having won 27 of the 38 tests played under his guidance and rewriting the record books several times   Mallet today has matured as a person and it is no wonder the Sharkies are after him. Please windpomp no red herrings oak. Firstly, I said in that other thread Mallet would come back and coach an international side. I did not say it would be  the Boks. He like Jake are shunned by the darfs at SARU.
"John Smit has done nothing yet. He is only starting on 1 July"  -says windpomp. Man windpomp get with it. Are you trying to tell me Smith as the Sharks CEO starting on July 1st would have had no say in the appointment of the Sharks coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Hilarious!!!
Well said Chippo stick to ya guns on this one!

Rooitwit nice to see you getting one right for a very rare change. Its a red letter day for sure!

I still rate Mallett very highly, the only reason why he did so poorly in 99 was due to all the injuries he had. Look at the team sheet of 98 and 99. This force him to select a different player.

Honiball and Muller was one of the main reason why the boks did so well. Honiball played flat and ever since the honiball days, no flyhalf have been able to match his feets.

Also remember that he was called the 'lem', because he use split people in half. In 99 both him and Muller was injured, leaving Mallet to select De Beer and Venter, neither of them were great but Mallet had to make the most of what he had and that meant going against his natural instinct of playing a more ball in hand game.

I use to hate the Freestate because of Venter and De Beer, they would just kick the ball away the whole day.

It is easy to quote stats out of context.

Mallet only lost his job when critisising the cost of test tickets. We have two of the best coaches in the world in Jake White and Mallet, why would we want to through them away. Look what Jake is doing at the Brumbies and at the same time making Australia stronger, we need both of them here. Even its only in some form of consultation.

We just can't get it right. If you look at the NZ, Henry is helping the Blues out, Smith took over the chiefs and turned them into champions within a space of year.

SA need our best coaches, but now we are stuck with the Alistairs and PDV's, can't believe we have to put up with this crap.

Spot on Kingcorn apart from one thing. What may have cost us the WC was Venter being banned for a marginal tramping which was considered by many to be harsh. The Bok backs were not the same with out him.

Of course we need our best coaches in the mix. Guys like Jake, Mallet and Dr Venter have all the experience in the world, know the game and have a brain.

We shoot ourselves in the foot totally with quotas and also simply bad decisions.

I have recently posted this elsewhere. The wheels started coming off for Mallett the moment that he could not even handle his own coaching staff and subsequently and as a direct result of that broke his chain of wins in the game at Twickenham. There was conflict between Jake White and Solomons and Mallet broke his promise to Jake White, to retain him until the RWC, in order to keep Solomons happy. Thereafter his record negated all "he" has achived up till then. He also insulted the rugby supporters in the media by saying that they do not know their rugby, when he started being criticised  by the Bok supporters.

He lost his job and went to France were he had success as a domestic coach and got the job of national coach for Italy and he made a balls-up of that by having the secon worst record as a coach since profesional rugby. He only won 19% of his matches. The coach who he took over from, Pierre Berbizier, had a 41% win ratio. Italy went backwards under him. Techinically he is the third worst but Macioletti, in 1999 was an interim coach for 4 tests onl in 1999, and can hardly be taken into account. The only other coach who had a worst record than Mallet was Brad Johnstone (15.4%) and he was in the job for just longer than two years. He had 4 wins from 26 games in that year. Compared to those two, Mallet had more than 4 1/2 years in which he "was going to turn Italy around". He managed to win 9 games out of a possible 42. That gives him about 2.6 wins per year against .

In respect of his SA coaching record. The moment that he had that first loss against England and had his coaching staff shuffled around, his fortunes also turned around in dramatic style. He then went on to lose 11 games and only managed 11 wins. Those wins included wins against Italy (X2), Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Spain, Uruguay. His score against NZ in that period was 2-3 and his score against Aust was 1-5 for that same period.

Then we are also told that he has matured. WTF? Where does that come from. How do you mature and then get worse than what you were or than what your predisessors were?

Once again, if anybody appoints him as a coach, then fine, as long as it is not the Bulls or the Springboks. I do not see him getting a coaching job anytime soon in any case. He has ruled himself out. Why would he want to be a coach in any case, when he can sit back in the comfort of a studio chair in front of all the cameras and criticise each and every other coach, without having to go out and prove to anybody that you can actually do a better job yourself?

one thing that should be taken into consideration was the quality of players Mallett had at the start of his tenure vs the poor quality at the end of his tenure. (He started with quality like James Small, Tiechman, Bob Skinstad, Henry Honniball, Andre joubert, Percy Montgomery, Paulse etc etc).

After retirements and injuries, he was left with the likes of Louis Koen and Braam van Straaten.

Braam van straaten and Louis Koen combined in one test to make the worst flyhalf and inside center combination the boks have probably even fielded. Neither player was of international standard.

What a joke it was in one match during a Northern Hemishphere tour, against wales I think- when Braam was at 12 and Koen at 10.

Every time the ball was recycled they would both run into the field position of the flyhalf as if confused who was actually playing 10, and stood looking at each other is if they had never met each other.

- Then Roedolf Strallie took over after a short spell of Makraaf. By the time Jake White got the job a new generation of top quality players were just starting to get into their prime- Schalk Burger, Matfield, Fourie Dupreez, Habana(soon after).

So in a sense both Jake White and initially Mallett were both fortunate to inherit a good generation of players of international standard- some choosen as player of the year etc.

Straeuli in my book was the unluckiest Bok coach. Huge unjuries in his tenure. Also robbed blind of a Tri nations by bent down under refs- absolute disgrace. He played the game with third and fifth choice players at times.

However as always in these cases emotions take over and I dont think I have heard an objective assessmento of rudolf. Lounge lizards were shocked by the ahrdships of Kamp Staaldraad which although Joost thought was great was a bit too much for the said lizards to bear.

Yet once again the the real worth of the man was know by rugby men and he got a high level appointment with the Sharks as their commercial director  -some had concluded that the guy had no brains etc.

Sad but true

The 16 wins in a row.....was followed by a period where we won 12 and lost 11 under Mallett. But the 12 wins came in part, over Italy(twice), Spain, Uruguay, Scotland and Canda. eliminate those giants and we had 6 wins in Malletts last two years versus 11 losses. The fact is the moment he tinkered with the model he lost the plot and never got it back together again.

windpomp please no smear campaign against the distinguished coach and Springbok Mr Nick Mallet.

Most of us  watch Nick's superb commentary on TV and the excellent way in which he conducts himself so you are fooling only your self once more.  Vast experience, intelligence and rugby acumen (perhaps why you cant follow his comments)  make him the best commentator by far on rugby matters that we have had for a very long time.

Where would WP be now if Mallet had have stayed here!!!

Hasbeen I haven't seen a lot of Mallet's commentaries. But the ones I have seen have more or less been rants against the coach. His criticisms of our style of rugby are pretty hypocritical. Apart from the first NH tour, Malletts teams played crash all and up and under rugby.

Moz if I remember rightly he had a pretty weak squad by WC time. The cupboard was bare during the latter part of his time with the Boks. JSke, ou pdv and now Meyer have no such excuse. Meyer needed a year to get going and we are well into a renewal phase. 2014 we start to rock.

The man has moved on since being Bok coach and would be a great improvement on ou Allisair for one.

I find him very reasonable when speaking. One doesa not detect an agena etc and here we again see also that there is no reason - he is not wanting any coaches job. His comments are usually spot on and honest.

John Smit is no fool and the offer by the Sharks is telling.
Viva Mallet Viva!

I see no comment is made about his two domestic wins in France.

I disagree. We had almost the same team for RWC99 as we had for our winning streak. In 2000 we lost some players.
