'If we pick players a Springbok side full of players who are used to getting beaten by 50-plus points we are in big trouble. They are not suddenly going to turn into world-beaters because they have a Bok jersey on. We have to select players out of successful franchises and at the moment, the Lions are our only successful team in Super Rugby. That is worrying."
..
No choosing best players in each position there CC. We have to find a team, the players can be fine-tuned over time. But without a combination that plays like a team we will be the Bools once again this year.

There are very few players that chooses themselves and the rest are open for grabs. I think that there in fact no Bulls players who qualify for selection and for the rest the Lions team should provide the bulk of the players.
However, the question remains how do the players from other franchises tie in with the game plan of the Lions. It would be very, very difficult to teach them to sing out of the same hymn sheet.
We will know next moth the way things are going and I can see some real problems coming up. There are way too many weak players in the various franchises - so I believe that the following will be the better team to select:-
15 Willie le Roux14 Kobus van Wyk13 Harold Vorster12 Damian de Allende11 Raymond Rhule10 ????????????????????? 9 ????????????????????? 8 Warren Whitley 7 ????????????????????? 6 ????????????????????? 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit 4 Eben Etzebeth 3 ????????????????????? 2 Malcolm Marx 1 ?????????????????????
As to the 10 situation Jantjies will have to grow some balls and not panic under pressure before he could be considered. He was a no-show whenever he played in tests and that is a problem. I have reservations about Lambie as well.
I think there are only three scrummies to consider - Schreuder, Venter and Meyer. The rest has been piss-poor throughout the Super Rugby season.
Some players will have to be found in the loosie position. The players of last year was so poor - their retention would be unthinkable.
Beast would have been my first choice no 1 - but he was poor when he came on last night.

I agree, few players pick themselves. For example among your better team....I don't buy Rhule and Allende....van Wyk is somewhere between provincial and international.. But that's not Mallett's point. What he is saying is the Bools, Cheetahs, Chiefs and now Stormers have been beaten to a pulp. To expect players from these teams to believe they are going to beat the ABs is a tall order.

Now with Van Rensburg out - who do you think will be the center combination. Vorster in fact did better at 13 than he did at 12 when he came onto the scene. De Allende would be back soon and hence my proposal as a potential solution?
I think you are referring to the Kings and not the Chiefs in this case. In any event there are very few alternatives available in certain positions and in others the story is not clear. I have reservations about Rhule as well - but the scope for selection is very, very llimited. With Combrinck coming back he would be my first choice wing together with Van Wyk. The other wings are totally inexperienced or midgets and the latter is nio real options.

I have demoted the Kings to Chiefs.

Mistake since there is a Chiefs team in Super Rugby and the NZ will take exception to your demotion.
