Ex Sport 24

Justin Marshall, yet another prominent former rugby international to go the TV pundit route when the curtain came down on his playing days, probably sounds like a breath of fresh air in the match-day booth to many South Africans.

I believe it remains true to say that New Zealand’s commentators are collectively a less biased bunch than most of their Australian counterparts - perhaps “Kafe” tries best not to be? - but they do still call All Black games with a bit of a slant, just as SuperSport’s arsenal are also largely SA-leaning, with at least some element of logic.

But this is where Marshall is disarmingly different.

With the now 38-year-old, 81-cap scrumhalf legend (I believe we can brand him that) having taken up microphone duties for Sky Sports NZ, has come a new voice in moderation and impartiality, if you like.

So much so, in fact, that on Kiwi soil itself many people have been muttering about whether the ex-Crusaders No 9 favourite has some kind of axe to grind with the current All Black set-up!
I noticed this week that there’s a fairly well-subscribed Facebook campaign titled “Get Justin Marshall off Sky Sports commentary”. (Well NOT at all surprising from the land of BL. Marshall would be completly at odds with these mongs!!!)

And in the blogosphere are others saying things like: “The man is one of my favourite All Blacks ever. I’d just prefer him to be feeding a scrum than commenting on a scrum.”

So Marshall doesn’t have a unanimous TV fan club in New Zealand, that’s for sure.

To my neutral mind, though, he comes across admirably well for fair judgement, and it has surprised me a bit because in his playing career I always viewed him as a dyed-in-the-wool New Zealander who was never afraid to wind up, for instance, fans in South African stadiums - but then aren’t scrumhalves universally like that?

During the nail-biting second Test between the All Blacks and Ireland last Saturday, he spotted an instance of sneaky, cynical obstruction by a home player.

It doesn’t matter if you are black or green, rugby doesn’t need that kind of thing,” he submitted, or words to that effect. (The guy is ONE in a million in nz)

And from my very distant hotel telly in Johannesburg, I couldn’t find significant cause to disagree, myself ...

Long live Marshall may he prove to be a thorn in the side of all cheating nz refs etc.

Liked him as a player - like him as a commentator.  One of the few who supported joost in his hour of need.  A true legend.  so unlike many of his country-men.

Brycy will be calling for his head. Wonder what sitting bull and hakwa think of Marshall as a commentator. Somehow I wonder if Daniels would not have made  avery similar player. Keegan has a lot of skills and is about the same  size. This is what should have happened to Keegan.

Marshall's commentary is similar to someone scratching a blackboard with their fingernails - he is that irritating! He does not commentate - he tries to coach the other team on Fox TV live to beat the ABs - what a loser,  probably his attitude (if he is honest and looks dark deep into himself) stems from the fact that he has never won any RWC - call it envy, tall poppy syndrome etc etc

@ben10 aka  der aristkratt aka pieter van zyl,
i love the lack of substance in ur description of marshall commentating,,,

"During the nail-biting second Test between the All Blacks and Ireland last Saturday, he spotted an instance of sneaky, cynical obstruction by a home player."

"And from my very distant hotel telly in Johannesburg, I couldn’t find significant cause to disagree, myself ..."

so let me get this straight ben10 aka  der aristkratt aka pieter van zyl, marshall spotted a cynical something by someone and all this from ur hotel room???  its little wonder ur such a fan of marshall, as u both have the ability to back ur comments with any evidence what so ever, u both love to run ur big mouths.

the biggest critisicim with marshalls commentry is the amount of times he makes mistakes when commentating, all other NZ commentators will wait for a replay if they are not sure of a call, but proceeds to tell it like he thinks it is, like in the 45th min (give or take a minute) when McCaw makes a tackle, gets to his feet and then pilfers the ball. marhsall the says McCaw was offside as he came in from the side,,,,
TV shows the replay and then hes like "oh, ok ill give McCaw that one."
these type of know it all comments which get proven wrong everytime happens with marshall in every game he commentates, and that trend started up north where he first commentated.
its little wonder that u ben10 aka der aristkratt aka pieter van zyl are a big fan of marshall, cos u both love to share ur opinon which is devoid of anything even resembling fact.

i know it hurt when McCaw beat the crap out of u ben10 aka  der aristkratt aka pieter van zyl, but need to get over ur obssession with NZ, cos we all know what u look like and ur only half away from a heart attack, so take a deep breath and relax.
its not the All Blacks or NZs fault the Boks couldnt get a whitewash over england, nor is it NZs and All Blacks fault they are the only team to enetr the 4nats undefeated,,,,,well maybe the All Blacks are resposnible for that one.

Guys if any one of us knew as much as Justin about rugby we would be in the box making the calls.

He has always been fair and open during his playing career, so I cannot see him changing his standards.

I for one have always admired and respected him and will continue to do so.

Sorry to burst your bubbles....

@ben10 aka  der aristkratt aka pieter van zyl,
there are no facts to ur posts,,,,someone did something somewhere, wtf??? o_O

u and justin marshall are exactly a like, no substance or facts to ur comments what so ever, just mindless NZ hate dribble.

i think marshall tries hard to be mr impartiality and is quick to mouth off before often being proved wrong by the replays and u ben10 aka  der aristkratt aka pieter van zyl, well we all saw what happened to u in the 2nd All Blacks/Boks test after u tackled the ref, McCaw beat ur fat ass all over the show and since then ur fascination and detest with all things NZ was born.

nice one king richie, i do so enjoy every moment of those punches u dealt beeno1.
