The Lions rugby union has announced that Marx and Whitely are both available for selection.

So what now? Marx will retain his position as the default choice as Bok hooker, but what about Whitely?

Personally I would prefer Vermeulen, but I think a case can be made for horses for courses, ie. Vermeulen could be selected for games on wet fields or a heavy pack of forwards while Warren can be the man for a lighter pack.

Not sure if they are available for the Boks, or just the Lions next week.
Ideally, they both get a run this weekend before the 4 nations.  Bizzare that he got injured playing club rugby in Japan.
He was appointed by Coetzee and done well for a few games, then was injured since then at test level. He has lost the Bok captaincy to Eztebeth, and now Kolisi.
What a waste of the season so far for him- especially since he was injured for much of last season as well.

I would have posted the above - but wanted to find out about the return dates of Etzebeth. Schickerling and Willemse as well.   I sent the Stormers a message but thus far no response

Too many of the Lions race off to Japan during breaks in our rugby ......RugbyChampinship ends & they're off to Japan & returning 48 hours before the EOYT starts. That ends, & they're back in Japan until Superugby...................

Probably one of the reasons Jantjies looks robotic & lacking enthusiasm.

Unfortunately fate has played Whiteley a nasty hand, because on merit, there is no way he can replace Vermeulen the way the latter is playing. All is not lost though, because Whiteley coming of the bench as a super-sub could really do some damage. As far as the captaincy is concerned, well, it is what it is, they are not going to take it away from Kolisi, there is too much at stake politically.

What's wrong with Vermeulen at 7 and Whiteley at 8?

Blindside flank is familiar territory to him.

Besides ... he can only be an improvement on Du Preez and PS Du Toit.

Just wish we could replace the pretender at 6 with a real open side flank.

Whatever happened to that woman coach that was helping with the Springboks and Proteas on their hand eye coordination and reflexes?

The Du Preez twins could really do with some one to one help. Hands like cows udders.

Does it look to you as if there's anything going on between those ears of his?

Sometimes I wonder if the light's even on.

@Xavi. You’re talking about Sherylle Calder. As far as I know, she is currently involved with the England football WC squad.

The Dupreez twins need a brain transplant , it is not just about basic skills. Maybe there is/was a third mutant twin that took al the brain matter.

So what is going on here?   We all agree that Kolisi should not be in the team and that is a fact.  However, CC now wants to find a place for Whiteley to play so he wants Du Toit out of the team.  He wants to move Vermeulen to 7 - where in living memory the latter has never played.   Earlier he said that Whiteley is not a player for tests as he is not physical enough.

So where to now?

Thing is, Mike ... we need a player that can defend when called upon ... and let's face it, PS Du Toit has a few issues in that department.

We cannot keep playing catch up.

Besides ... Vermeulen is by far a better 7 than Du Toit will ever be and with Whiteley in at 8, it's a win win for us all.

Weird

But not entirely true.    Du Toit had the highest tackle count of all the loosies in the last two tests and he only played at 7 in the last test until Snyman was replaced.

Whiteley did not feature very well on the tackle count. even when playing for the Lions.   I know you are very pro-Lions players and would like to suggest that the y should rather consider Whiteley as the bench player iro  the loosies.

And to move Vermeulen to 7 because you think he may be a better 7 than Du Toit is really wishful thinking.   Vermeulen is a natural 8 - not a 7 and he would be exposed playing at 7.

@Cera.

Yeah thats her. Cheers mate.

It's a shame as the Boks could do with her or anyone else really.

Was that lady involved in 2015 in the two world cups?   In the case of the Springboks that year she was involved in a lost cause in view of the crazy game plan of Meyer and the knock-ons by Burger - the stand-in flyhalf.    There must be value in using her again -she really could help some duds.
