Frans missed 4 tackles over the weekend, but that was dwarfed by his massive attacking stats: F SteynC 0 7 19 62 2 10 2 0 Ten defenders beaten/ 2 clean breaks/ 2 offloads.....when last did we see numbers like that from a domestic 12. Rassie needs to include Frans and Bismarck in his plans as advised by Smit.

Frans Steyn would bring more to the table than any centre in SA.
He is not perfect, but Delande and Esterhuizen are the other options... Both crash balls, at least Frans Steyn does have an offload.
Frans Steyn is also the better crashballer out of the three. He often pulls in 2 backline defenders and the ball is cleared quickly from the ruck, creating possible overlaps.
Jean Devilliers was one of the few Bok centres that was not a crash ball. Franco Smith was also pretty good with a slick pass.

SB

Are you becoming addicted to talking crap as well.   Steyn was the most useless center for three years running as inside center in Super Rugby,    Him at center - you must be kidding.

Sharkbok is being practical, though I disagree with his assessment of Andrè.

Seen Frans play a few times this year he is a shadow of his past. Mostly played at fullback these days - far too slow for 15

No chance in hell. I’ll stick with the 12 that beat more defenders and made more clean breaks than any other test 12 last year. Serfontein is playing really well at 12 for Montpellier at the moment - he is just back from injury

I haven't been watching Frans. The last I saw of him was the clip posted up by someone here around September. He was excellent in that game. Frans has always been better than Damian. It was a tragedy that we ended up rewarding Damian's atrocious 2015 Super rugby campaign. Even worse were the circumstances that forced Frans to rule himself out of the WC squad later that year. He is a natural centre. Damian at best looks like a 13. However, he is part of that new breed of player which doesn't fit nicely into any one position. Excels at almost nothing in particular. A 50% prime Frans would be better than Damian on his very best day. What we saw on the weekend was a disgracefully flaccid performance.

This is weird - Steyn in both 2014 and 2015 DDe Allende was twice the center Steyn was,   Soli Billy (AO) then tried to fond a reason to the effect that I was wrong.  In a game where Steyn and De Allende was direct opponents De Allende played the fool with Steyn and you should hear the multiple lies that emerged,  Four non=existent clean breaks was one of those.   Silly Billy is a joke - his knowledge of rugby is non\existent and his comments on s ite is consequently a farce..

De Allende played the fool with Steyn

You also claimed he played the fool with Nonu in that test in 2015 where they only directly opposed each other once.

Pakie

True - he outplayed Nonu comprehensively in the RC test and Nonu was benched early in the test.   That claim was indisputably correct - even though Silly Billy and you tried to indicate that he was benched because he was outplayed by the wing,

OK and they played each other in the WC semi as well - so have you gone bananas?

When will you and Silly Billy ever to deal with facts on this site - bird brain?

Damian was poor in that home All Black test. He was poor throughout that RC. He also couldn't get the upper hand over Frans in that Super rugby game. One such tackle resulted in Damian spinning around Frans to the ground. It was a game where Damian aimlessly kicked into the hands of a Shark and left the other side of the field exposed. His team had no chance to defend it. Try.

Nonu was shown up badly only twice in that test: once when Brussow sent him flying, and once more when Pollard put Kriel through between him and Smith to score. He was substituted immediately after the latter incident. It was one of Damian's better tests, but he and Nonu hardly saw each other all game long. I did a full account of both of them in that test somewhere in the past.

Pakie, what disappointed me about that game was that the All Blacks were there for the taking. Brussow was immense at the breakdown, but our centre pair never took the game by the scruff of the neck. It was scrappy and fruitless. Then, the All Blacks up their game in the WC and the two pretenders were exposed.

Pollard was the most effective back on the park that day, beating 7 defenders and putting Kriel through.

Here's my rundown of the game from July last year, including all Damian's touches on attack.

De Allende wiping the floor with Nonu?

Here is Damien's touches in the 25 July 2015 RC game:

04:06 catch and pass
09:40 pass from base of ruck
17:58 short run into traffic
18:22 pick and go from ruck gaining a few meters
18:58 phase play, DA bumps off AB #6 and makes another 7 or 8 meters, sending A Smith flying too - clean break #1
20:58 catches kickoff, swamped immediately
22:37 catch and pass
35:32 catch and pass
38:39 phase play, beats 2 (1 forward, possibly Read, and A Smith) for a strong 15+m carry - clean break #2
42:38 Pienaar feeds DA from ruck, who runs a few meters back into traffic
44:01 receives pass from Willie on deep counter, runs a few meters before tackled
52:04 gathers a wayward pass from Pienaar and makes a few meters, tackled by AB #6
57:26 catch and pass to Hendricks
65:51 catch and pass to Kriel
65:53 regathers lost pass from Kriel and carries into traffic

Damien had two strong carries / breaks
- at 18:58
- at 38:39

Those two carries constitute about half his running meters for the entire game. The rest of his game consisted mostly of simple but accurate passing and a few short carries into traffic.

Did Damien have a good game? Yes.
Did he wipe the floor with Nonu? No, not if that refers to one on one domination.

Damien and Nonu had only one direct encounter the whole game at 44:01 from broken play on the counter, where Damien jinxed this way and that, avoiding the Nonu tackle only to drift sideways into the next defender. What he probably should have done was run straight, draw Nonu, and pass as there was space to attack on the outside and the Boks had a penalty advantage.

The only players he wiped the floor with so to speak were Aaron Smith (twice) and Liam Messam.

The only center who directly breaks through his opposite numbers with any effect is Kriel when he goes between Nonu and Smith to score after brilliant work by Pollard taking it flat to the line.

Nonu was solid but unspectacular for his 47 minutes and he missed a few tackles. He did set up the Ben Smith try just before the half by drawing Burger across before sending Sopoaga through the resulting inside gap, who fed Smith for the try.

Why was Nonu replaced?

There is nothing to indicate it had anything to do with Damian. Nonu was pulled immediately after Kriel ran through him and Smith to score. My theories would be:

1. Because Kriel breached his channel to score, and because he'd missed a few tackles already, including being physically dominated by Brussow at around 18:55.
2. A simple impact substitution. The coaching staff felt Fekitoa's explosiveness was called for in the home straight. Fek ended up making a crucial 50m break through a ruck that got the All Blacks away from their own 22 at around 67:35. The Boks never saw the NZ 22 again.

Pollard beat more defenders than any other player on the park and was pivotal in the Bok attack.

Do with this what you will.

Poor Silly Billy

The same nutcase assessments made by you before and you still believe your own BS descriptions claiming that Nonu was benched because of some mysterious reasons nothing to do with De Allende and for some reason to do with everybody else but him.

Just for your information here is Nonu's stats for that game:-

Nonu 0/0 0 1/2/4 17 0 2 0 0 4/4 0/0 2 0/0

And for the record here is De Allende for the same match:-

de Allende 0/0 0 0/6/11 46 2 6 0 0 10/2 0/0 0 0/0

I rather believe what was written by everybody else about that game than your standard lies.

After I exposed Damian's best test last year, according to statistics, you should be more careful what you hang your hat on. Very sloppy. I still have all those games of 2015. I might get something together. Review Damian's 2015 RC.
