Matfield at 7 for Boks

Schalk on the bench as an impact player. If Vermuelen is injured, Schalk can start.

Other than the Lineouts and Kickoffs, Matfield plays more like a number 7 than a lock at times. He h as good linking skills like the pass he made to Jean to finish.
When he was in France his team moved him to number 7. 
If we played Matfield at 7, that would allow us to bring in another lock enforcer to partner Etzebeth. With 2 enforcers we could moer the opposition into the ground.
This combination would be especially good in the Northern Hemisphere. 
The All Blacks might be without Retalick next weekend, and he is the closest thing to an enforcer that they have. 
It could be a good opportunity to bully their pack into submission.

Before you wrote the above - did you ask yourslef a question as to what is expected from a loose forward - inclusive of a  7?   There are some elements like breakdown ball protection andrecovery - which are very improtant in any loosie.   
In recent tests with Vermeulen, Louw and Coetzee as loosies - we beat the Aussies and AB's in that component of the game.    Alberts hv never produced anyhing in that component of the game and there were constant question marks as to why we lost out in those elements of the game.  
Burger is not sas effective as he should eb in that component of the game - but he is at least a loosie thta adds value to linking with backlineplayers - etc.  Matfield  cannot protect breakown ball and he cannot recover breakdown balls.   As such he is not a loosie and should never be used as a loosie.     

Matfield is often at the base of the ruck protecting the ball. He puts himself in a position in a ruck much like the 8th man in the a scrum where he controls the ball with his feet to give the scrum half protection and space. 
I would agree that Matfield does not recover the ball though. He is more mobile than Fat Alberts, and is a much better link player than fat Albert.

Matfield is NEVER at the base of the ruck -0 unless he is the tackled player.   He often enough does an Alberts on us - standing around behind the ruck.  I have not seen him once recovering a tackled ball situation.     
He sometimes enters a ruck - but that is also fairly rarely.  Wtach out when he plays and you will see what really is going on.  
Bty the way that is why his tackle count is fairly high for a lock - he stands around behind rucks or even at times amongst the backline players.   The latter used to be his problem and it is not out of the way as yet. .   

The french immediately saw matfiled was no lock. so they tries him at 7. he was too slow etc etc .Why waste more time with old matfiled?  Ditto Bakkies. Meyer of course will disagree but I wonder whether these two oldies will make the tour to the NH.
It getting to be absurd. Only a complete hatter will deny the wobbliers gave the Boks a hard time for 60 minutes. We need a properly contstructed tight five and loose trio.we mostly need another warrior to joing Etzebeth.Mike your take on Burger is way out. Sharkbok if you want a link player look no further than the classy Whitely who is in the squad right now.Frankly Coetzee, Vemuelen and Burger would scare the wits out of the wee abs. Two enforcer locks and Marcel Van der Merwe at tighthead and the wee abs would not know what hit them.

 Once again ou Beenbal comes up with the idea that Toulon moved Matfield at 7. He was played there once for part of a game. I have given him accounts of Matfield's time at Toulon before and he has left the matter alone for a while.

My guess is that, if asked for any confirmation that Matfield was indeed moved to the flank by Toulon, he would pull a Maaikie on himself and ride off in the sunset without coming up with anything.

The other alternative that our friend ou Beenbal had was that Matfield's contract was terminated prematurely by Toulon.

 Lol Coetzee, Vermulen, Burger have been facing Abs for a while now. They diddn't scare them 2 weeks ago, not sure why their is any evidence to suggest the ABs who have arguably the best tight five in world rugby would be scared by the Boks, when they know what to expect. I know some love to live (well prefer) to live in a world Where Boks are the best when everything falls into place. But its the sense of arrogance, which is not earnt. Once SA beats NZ consistently, then you have earnt that right, until then well talk .

Sorry windpomp I did read and did comment about matfiled playing flank when at Toulon when it actuyally happened so your stats I take with a pinch of salt. I also note that matfiled came home pretty fast not seeing out his contact. How long was he there.  Talk about a monumental flop.Anybody with half agrain of sense can see he is physically not up to the task.
3 I Q  Burger has been out injured for  few years. You simply dont produce loose forard of the quality of Vermulen and Burger.
If Meyer would only pick a decent tight five you would be minced - we all should know that. Not only have the Boks got better tight five players than the wee abs but so have England. 
Unfortunately for us our coach is getting it wrong re matfiled and I beleive Jannie. Instead of having a dominating pack he is getting it wrong and on top of that Vermuelen may be out. 
Add on the RAW handed to Oz. Add the RAW re the ab test where mcaaw was not yellow carded or anything for his tackle on Louw plus being unlucky to have another palyer down at that precise momnet - allowed wee abs to at last score a try against 13 men. So a Raw plus extreme luck won that test for the faltering abs.If abs lose this he Ellis park test they will have burgled yet another RC.
Boks give these arrogant abs a thorough hiding regardless of Meyer selection blunders and Vermuelen etc. I think the whole world has all had enough of these puffed up cretins! Down with the wee abs.
