Victor Matfield is out of the Boks 1st test match in this years RC and he may miss more than just the one game.

No doubt Baboon-ou will be plucking at his little mielie and trumpeting gleefully at the news of someone else's unfortunate injury when he hears this . . . but if truth be told it's probably not a bad thing for the Boks in the big scheme of things. Matfield (like Bakkies) is yesterday's news and this will probably end up being an opportunity for Lood de Jager.

matfield was the key for our rugby championship, so this is bad news. lood will never be a victor, more a bakkies. but hey, new zealand have lost carter for 4 weeks so they got it bad too.

From a NZ perspective this worries me, I was looking forward to Ab Tight five partic retilluck and whitelock own old man Matfeild. De Jager and Estebeth is a different kettle of fish.

etzebeth has done what? nothing much. lood is good, but not a replacement for victor who is a 5, not 4 . retallick is average and whitelock is nothing so they will struggle again anyway. they only ever got the better of kruger.

Well considering the win loss ratio over the past three years, I don't think anyone would label Retiilluck or Whitelock average, they have been a big part of why NZ have been so dominant. Based on Retilluck's form in super rugby, ask anyone he is by far the form lock of world rugby, its almost a comedy that a lot of SA bloggers cannot accept that haha anyway .

Oh please Buggered, pull your head out your arse will you?

Victor is past his best by quite some way.

Also, De Jager is a 4 lock and Victor plays at 5 so you can't compare the two ... wake up man!!

Do us all a favour and go learn something about the sport before you come spouting your horseshit here .

Dumbass!!!

There's a lot more to playing at 5 than jumping up and down in a lineout you stupid twat.

That's all Matfield can manage right now.

Useless in the tight loose and completely pathetic at scrum time.

A jolly jumper ... a liability to the Bok squad.

Why am I not surprised about Matfield's injury.  Old people cannot play rugby and he IS too OLD.   He is no loss to the Springbok side as he is physically-deficient and cannot compete anymore.
Bonso the Ape is clueless about rugby in any event.
With Matfield gone and a good lock combination we are likely to get  the Tight 5 functioning again.

good defender, good hands, good lineout, restarts not worse than any other 5 out there. you have no basis whatsoever you silly little boy. Matfield is the best, deal with it. Everyone knows you are wrong, noone in the game talks like that about Mafield. not only that, but matfield is a genius tactician, a key thinker off the field. eddie jones said he is like having a coach on the field, a real edge over other teams. but hey, cleangene knows best, are you sure you arent saffex? hahaha

Agreed ...

We'll have someone who'll be able to contribute fully as is expected of him.

No one will have to up his play by 10 - 20% just to make up for the short comings of an elderly wannabe, who was selected to begin with by his good friend the coach.

We all know it had nothing to do with merit.

Gets pushed out of the way by a scrummie and anyone else on the filed - weak tackles - no ball carries in traffic - go down straight when tackled - give away penalties - no contribution to mauls.
What lineouts will Slapgat take that other locks won't take?   Matfield WAS the best - he is not even remotely acceptable anymore.  Deal with it.

Your describing Goosen and Lambie, your two great finds. hahahahahahaah!!!

Also, who do you think runs the lineout to get that lineout drive going? hahahaha, yes Matfield! Oh boy, you are a stooge of note, a real cork bobbing hopelessly against the tides of stupidity. Man you are entertaining. Penalties? bwahhahahaha! prove it boy'o.

CleanGene, it was completely merit. Kruger, Bekker, Eben failed to deliver the goods. Meyer gave plenty of chances and they blew it. not his fault he had to go to matfield to get the job done and strengthen the team. you are so sour.

Mike was just trying to help you out with some solid facts.

If you had listened to me in the first place and pulled your head out your arse you would have seen that ... but alas it seems too firmly lodged.

Tell me butt wipe ... who do you support ... The Bulls perhaps?

Have you not seen how eassily Matfield gets pushed out of any attempted driving maul and landed on the grass on the side of mauls.  It happens time and time again - but you have not seen it?
That is why you are clueless - you dream about things and that becomes in your eyes reality.    Just go and look at the second Welsh  test and you will find Matfield gabe away two penalties - both converted by the Welsh.    Both were the result of physical deficiency.

Matfield has fantastic technique in tackling and jumping but he doesn't have the strength anymore to contribute to the forward pack.

mike, you are trying to tell me that matfield gets shoved out of EVERY maul. Dont you understand how extreme your view is? maybe that happened once, like Os being bumped off in a tackle, these things can happen, but matfield has always been a good defender and a good member of any maul. hell, even Bakkies has taken a few pastings, nobody gives and doesnt take in return. but you like to harp on about the same little thing over and over again and try to convince everyone that its a common thing. well it isnt working.

Matfield got shoved out of virtually every maul they endeavoured against the Welsh and the Scots.    He would get up and rejoin the mauls pushing not with his shoulder - but with his hands.    Worthless in mauls time and time again.   If it happens once - it is exusable - but when it happens all the time it is showing a serious deficiency.
One can understand why it happens - Matfield is way too light to be a lock inn the present game.   The 120 kg players push aside his 106 kg frame with the greatest of ease.

Matfield was an incredible player.

Now he's too old. He can no longer compete with the youngsters. Not in any aspect of the game. We need more than a jolly jumper.

Matfield must do the right thing and return to his retirement. He's only fooling himself if he thinks he deserves a place in the Bok team.

Move on Victor. Release Meyer from his obligation.

Is it the re <atfoeld play in mauls that you claim is a lie?   It is not a lie - it  is plain fact.  Fact also that Matfield does not play his part in scrums - he is weak in that as well.

I did not say that the scrums were worrisome - Meyer did.   I tried to work out the reason and the two new locks jumped out as a potential reason - and that is a fact of life.
By the way Kruger had zero grunt - Matfield has minus zero grunt.   Soos vinkel en koljander - die een is so sleg soos die ander.

You have to love ou Gonz ou!!! Stoutly arguing his hopless case. Hilarious really.
I suppose Meyer will play Loodt and Bakkies with Etzebeth off the bench. Let's hope for a man of the match performance from Loodt. Loodt and Etzebeth look like a world beating lock combo for the future. They will simply blow away wee Whiteley and retardlick. Imagine the power in the scrum with these two 125 kg locks. Trusting also that Beast will be fit and raring to go.

Well now I've heard it all. The Oom thinks Matfield is injured because he is too old. Hmmm one wonders about Stephanie and Etzebeth....how come they are injured.
Lots of BS in this string. Matfield is probably still the best lineout forward and kick receiver in the game. That's significant, lineouts are double the frequency of scrums and a pure scrummager will get the nod in many circumstances, why not a pure lineout artist
But Matfield is far more. He is also a talented passer of the ball and a flexible tackler in space..
The downside is supposedly the ruggedness of the whole pack. But when is  a Bok pack out grunted? I'm sure HM feels he can conduct the orchestra and get the right balance. And I'm sure he also feels Cictor adds to the on field tactical nous.
Obviously at some point age must negate even the greatest talents. But there is little evidence that Victor is playing below his 2011 RWC level. And if he is I have every confidence in HM to make that call.

Now the issue about line outs - how many line outs Matfield takes would not be taken by other half - decent locks who are not physically deficient - like Matfield is.   Have him in the Tight  5 and that becomes a Tight 4 plus one passenger.
"Obviously at some point age must negate even the greatest talents. But there is little evidence that Victor is playing below his 2011 RWC level. And if he is I have every confidence in HM to make that call."

Obviously Matfield was a top player - up to 2009 - at present he is nothing more than a Slapgat that is pushed aside by stronger players and is of no real value in scrums, mauls and other  phases of tight 5 play - a one horse pony taking line outs.   You are shockingly one-eyed in the relevant regard - but Matfield is going to cost us dearly in the CR - mark my words.
His absence from the Argentine  test will ensure a much easier victory greater victory for the Springboks.   Just think  how the 132 kgs Tomas will deal with Mayfield - pushing him aside as if he is a little kid.

Their is little evidance to show that someone is stronger in their 20's than their 30's. If anything, it is the other way around.
What is the saying that props are like fine wine.
A younger player is in most cases faster, but I doubt stronger. Look at Bryan Habana- he is still fast, but no way as fast as he was. However he does not suddenly have less strength than he did.
Thomas the tank so far has proved nothing except that he is a great prospect. He has to earn the status of an OS Durant. It is easy to have a purple patch in sport, or be a one season wonder, or peak early etc, etc.
It is great to see new prospects, but they should not be given too much credit to early- best too let them earn and enjoy this throughout their career. They can then look back on their career achievements as reality.

You are talking here of a 106 kg lock as against a physically developed and much stronger player weighing up to 25 kgs heavier than him.   Tomas did very well against the Irish in a team in the main consisting of Vodacom Cup level players.
Matfield never was a physically strong  player and he is even less so nowadays.

Matfield has never been strong, but often stronger loose forwards are more physical than the specialist 5 lock
For the All Blacks, Liam Messam is much stronger than the All Blacks number 5 whitelock.
When Matfield was in France, they played him as a flank because he is not physical

Typical - he is not a flank - but definitely not a lock.  He lacks grunt completely.
