Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said that a few key ajustments made by Victor Matfield have been central to their recent success.

The Bulls beat the Sharks in their return match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, handing the visitors their first defeat of the season.

When the two sides met in the first round of the competition in Durban, the Bulls were convincingly beaten by their coastal rivals.

Ludeke said that the difference had been a few tactical changes made by Springbok veteran Matfield who was the team's attack coach before making a return to the playing field.

"A lot of things we worked on over the last few weeks came through. Victor made a few smart adjustments to our attack in the week and it paid off for us today," he said.

The victory was affirmation to the Bulls coach that his side was on the right track as they cemented their place among the top sides in the competition with only five points separating them from the log-leading Sharks.

"If you get a win against the Sharks, the way we played, it is a good reward for us and playing against a side that is on top of their game," Ludeke said after the match.

Matfield, who took over the captaincy after lock partner Flip van der Merwe, was ruled out due to a hamstring strain on Friday, lead a spirited Bulls pack.

The return of former Bulls captain Dewald Potgieter to the side also added a new dimension to the side as he formed a handy trio with Deon Stegmann and Jacques du Plessis.

The 20-year-old Du Plessis is clearly coming into his own as he was again valuable with ball in hand and defensively.

Stegmann and Potgieter were equally impressive with the former terrorising the Sharks at the breakdown area.

The Bulls lay down the gauntlet after the restart with Du Plessis breaking through a tackle in the 47 minute to score, with flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter converting to level the scores on 13-13.

"We felt at half-time we created opportunities that we didn't use, we gave away soft penalties that kept them in front," Matfield said.

"But 20 minutes into the second half we were good and we can take a lot out of that, there are still a lot of mistakes but we are a work in progress."

Matfield said the secret to beating the Sharks brimming with Springbok players was the fact that they aimed at playing as a unit instead on relying on individual stars.

"Against the Blues we were very happy about how we played, tonight we always knew it would be tough because the Sharks are a very good team, they haven't lost yet," he said.

"We really had to fight till the end with 23 guys giving their best, playing for each other and really showing great commitment out there."

"String-bean" to the rescue, lol
His role might be over stated though, there are not enough details to know for sure. Clearly they are benefiting from his maturity as a senior player - never under estimate the ol' fellas

Still the best lineout forward in the world in both takes and organisation, and very good a kick offs. These were probably the Springbok's weakest area in 2013.
This also effected the Springbok driving play with far less tries and penalties being generated from this area.
It was the first time that I have seen an All Black lineout better than a Springbok lineout.  If all things remained the same, and Matfield had played in 2013 for the Boks, I think SA would  have won the the 4 nations.

So he took all of 4 line-outs and stole one.......apart from that what exactly did he do.......Willemse at 4 was far far better than Matfield

Matfield was not playing at 4, so you cannot really compare him and Willemse but since you want to compare them, then go ahead. They both stole an opposition ball in the line-out. Yes, Willemse did make more tackles, but he also missed more. On aggregate though, Willemse had one more successful tackle. If you are saying that Willemse was better, then enlighten us where he was better. He did not carry the ball more than Matfield. He did not make the line-out calls. In fact, his contribution in open play amounted to zip. Oh wait, he carried the ball once, for all of two meters.

In addition, I see els ewhere that you have Lood de Jager as your no 5 lock. Almost the same that goes for Willemse, goes for De Jager. Statistically he was marginally better on defence i.e. succeeding with 8/8 tackles compared to Matfield's 7/8, but for the rest, he was on par or worse than Matfield.

It is calling the lineouts, driving mauls and kick offs. It is like having the coach on the field playing. As soon as Matfield left the pitch it was obvious as the Sharks lineout became a factor again.

Matfield's defence was also top quality, always has been. He links up well, overall just does the right thing more often than not; he is a mastermind, end of discussion.

Oh what bullshit......Matfiled is a passenger these days and his lack of grunt is a liability in the tight phased and scrums.

The odd pass does not make him a link player and since when is it the locks job to be a link player.

Matfield missed a tackle - hardly top quality.

Matfield should not be playing, he is way past it

Expected answer. Ducking and diving again, hey. WTF made Willemse so " immense physically....." and if "...... Matfield was nowhere......", where was Willemse? I can throw your own question back at you. "...what game were you watching doofous?"

In any case, I was only having a dig at JJaffex. I like Willemse and think he had a great game. Thing is that he and Matfield were lock partners on Saturday. If JJaffex wanted to compare Matfield with another Bulls player, he should have compared him with the one who replaced Matfield when Matfield was subbed. Apples................. apples, you know.

personally i think that although mattfield has aided in the bulls lineout he isnt the one that has truely turned the team around, i think most the praise should be put on jacque louis potgieter as he has been the real king on the back kicking has been ace and he also attacks the gain line which aids his backs compared to old morne!
Also regarding matfield vs paul they both played well not one was better that the other they worked well as a pair which as locks you should do.

Away with the show pony I say. His groupiss need to find a new hero. I suggest the worlds finest lock Etzebeth as a candidate. It would save them looking so foolish. They may want a tthe same time  to consider the differences.
Matfield went to France on a big money transfer . They started him at lock - realsied he was no lock and tried him on the flank where he flopped. 6 months later I think it was he returned to the bulle. Bwahahhahahahaha

Ludeke and the Bulls organization needs to start getting some credit. Has any Super Rugby organization lost more of their top players in the last few years and yet every year they continue to produce a competitive team? This year in particular was supposed to be another "rebuilding" year and their early form confirmed that but they have turned it on and just taken out what most considered the best team in the comp this past weekend. Another big test coming up with the Chiefs, but should they win that or play it close will only confirm the observation that Ludeke is doing a really good job.

What I was trying to sa y when I said:
"Thing is that he and Matfield were lock partners on Saturday."

You are also quite correct about Jacques-Louis Potgieter. In addition, everybody seems to have missed the very first sentence of this article. Victor's main contribution was not necessarily his line-out work. "Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said that a few key adjustments made by Victor Matfield have been central to their recent success." There was a lot of comments and mocking about how stupid the Bulls was to make a forward their attacking coach when they appointed Victor in that role.

Baboon-ou, just some friendly advice . . . you have a phenomenal amount of Victor Matfield egg all over your stupid face which is in turn sitting on top an enormous amount of ref-bashing egg and this ref-bashing egg is in turn sitting on top of almost unbelievable amounts of Hapless Stompie chest-beating egg.
You seriously need to shut the heck up for a couple of months or at least get someone to help you start wiping all that egg off your face . . . and the fact that you're turning a brighter shade of scarlet with each passing week isn't helping your cause as the egg is just cooking and getting harder!
I realise you're too stupid to recognise well-meaning advice when you see it but maybe you can ask the nice zookeeper to read my post and explain it to you in single syllable words or grunts.
Rooinek trying very hard to spare Baboon-ou further embarrassment.

Chimp ou you have clearly missed the whole row about refs and accusations of incompetence etc been thrown around so do try and at lest keep abreast on matters lest you make your name more muddy!I have to assume you are all a twitter because the bulle handed you one rooitwit just as I predicted they would.
Most folk are seeing though ou victor these days - his support is dwindling and he is down to a few diehard fans who swoon everytime he takes his own ball in the lineout. World class they bleat as they go into raptures of delight .

DA ya half wit, it may not have occurred to you that the season is not over yet. I am unperturbed by the Stormers lack of success. If it leads to a new coaching staff and the addressing of serial problems it's all to the good. WP are the world premier province oaks. Huge resources, talent and rugby interest. All currently going to rack and ruin because of gross incompetence at the top. Are we seeing the begining of some change which will result in the Mighty Stormers taking their natural place as an elite rugby playing province. It's what SA needs, its what the Super 15 is crying out for.   For too long its premier light has not been shining as it should. Alas!

dah ya half wit we have the best crowd attandance, we have superb talent that helps sustain other SA provinces and the NH etc and all we need is top class managment. The day that happens watch who rules SA rugby. Pretenders like the bulle and the guppies will be swept aside!

By the way oaks what wee matfiled is trying to revive is his own fortunes. He is a master of self promotion. A con artist.
His powderpuf tackles are legendary. I recall him tackling one scrummie and going backwards. No best he resigns. He could possibly make a good coach as he is a slim boet but cant play the game himself. It's all a mirage that the gullible suck up like an addict. Fortunately Beeno, the one who knows, is here to unmask the villain. I doubt is wee victor is weighing more than 104 kg at the moment dispite the creatin diet! Hahahahahahhahaha.
Please oaks could we have some common sense prevailing?
Kbbs we all know why you would suppport the return of wee victor.

You have absolutely no idea how stupid you really look when you carry on harping about Matfield.

Everything else you say, you can get away with, but your constant Matfield rants just underline your imaturity or rank stupidity.

Mock him all you want, it just makes you look really stupid in the eyes of the ones who know and appreciate great players
